Weekend Contests

Some big big contests this weekend.

In the NFL, it's the divisional round.  On Saturday, Baltimore is at New England and the Carolina Panthers are at Seattle.   My former assistant Ty is a big Panthers fan, so my feelings for them are largely positive... but I like the Seahawks too.  I had a very pleasant breakfast with their owner a few months ago. I have no favorite in that game.  Of couse, I will be rooting hard for the Ravens to defeat Evil Little Bill and his Patriots.  Hey, they are named in honor of Edgar Allen Poe, a fellow writer... and while it is true they beat my Giants in a SuperBowl once, it's been a long time, I forgive them.

On Sunday, it is Dallas at Green Bay and Indianapolis at Denver.  I am for Denver in the AFC game; after all, Peyton is Eli's big brother.  And the Colts should never have left Baltimore besides, so pfui to the Irsays.  The early game, hey, no contest, I have hated and despised the Cowboys even longer than I have hated the Patriots, so I will be pulling hard for Green Bay and that baaaaad man Aaron Rogers.

(Meanwhile, I will also be rooting for the Jets to get a kickass GM and head coach, for Rex to get another head coaching job, and for my Giants to bring back Steve Spagnuolo as defensive coordinator).

The NFL isn't the only contest this weekend.  This year's Golden Globe Awards will also be presented on Sunday night, and GAME OF THRONES is nominated in Best Dramatic Series.  The competition this time around is HOUSE OF CARDS, THE AFFAIR, THE GOOD WIFE, and DOWNTON ABBEY.   David Benioff and Dan Weiss and Carolyn Strauss and a number of our other producers and cast members will be on hand at the ceremony, though I won't be there myself this year.  But I will watching from home and cheering loudly for the show, and hoping that my friends and colleagues get a Globe (the GG rules are such that I would not get one myself, even if we win).

So in conclusion:

GO RAVENS
GO PACKERS
GO DRAGONS
GO DIREWOLVES

GO HBO!

Pepper Johnson as NYG DC?
Hello Mr. Martin,

NYG fan here - Spags would be a good choice for NYG's DC, any thoughts on Pepper Johnson (Defensive Line Coach for Buffalo Bills) for the same position? He used to be a linebacker and his coaching pedigree comes from Parcells and Belichick.

Cheers,

Riz

Re: Pepper Johnson as NYG DC?
I loved Pepper as a player. Don't know much about his track record as a coach.

Go Ravens!!
I'm already nervous for this weekends games, but it should be a good showing. In regards to your comments on the Irsays, there are still many people in Baltimore who remember that fateful day when the Colts disappeared in the dead of night.

What are your thoughts on the speculation for the top draft picks? People are debating the best fits for Mariotta and Winston.

Sending tons of positive mojo over for a Game of Thrones win on Sunday!!

Who do you see winning a Seattle Green Bay NFC championship?

Seattle would have to be favored. Defense wins championships, and they would be at home, with their 12th man in full roar.

If Seattle wins the Superbowl, at least the Patriots won't be the last to repeat and people can stop talking about the "Superbowl curse". Go Hawks!

NFL: Divisional Round playoffs
I have a bad feeling in the pit of my stomach. I feel that Dallas is going to upset Green Bay on Sunday because Rodgers is not 100 percent healthy. Also, Dallas is undefeated on the road this season and I feel that we are going to get a rematch from earlier in the season in the NFC Championship game with Dallas at Seattle.

I have Ravens (+7), Seahawks (-10.5), Cowboys (+7), and Colts (+7) to all cover the spread. I like all the favorites to win and think most likely chance an underdog wins is on Sunday.

As for Golden Globes, GoT looks like a clear favorite in that field. After Mad Men most likely wins best drama at the Emmy's this year (being in its last season and already proven to be a favorite of Emmy voters, it will be impossible to beat), you would assume GoT should be a heavy Emmy's favorite for seasons 6 and 7.

I'm disappointed with you, GRRM. While I applaud you for still holding a grudge against Indy for stealing Baltimore's team, I am disappointed that you are cheering for the Ravens in the same post. I realize that they are playing Evil Bill and the hated Patriots, but that doesn't outweigh what they did to Cleveland. I hope you reconsider.

"Evil Bill" is in fact the Eddard Stark of the NFL!
While i am die hard fan of yours and hang on your every written word I've got to disagree with you that Mr. Bellichek is an evil man. He is a stoic, highly intelligent, and is a leader of men. Bill is our warden in the north and has taken the Pats from a rag tag group of Hedge Knights to lords of New England.Go Patriots!!!!

Go Hawks !!!
Love that you like Seattle, since I believe they will repeat as Super Bowl Champs, I also like Green Bay and hate Dallas, have always hated Dallas, been a Seattle fan since they first became an expansion team, back in the Jim Zorn/Steve Largent days, now there was a receiver!!!!

George, I'm with you on almost every issue, except...
Your eternal contempt for the Dallas Cowboys. I understand it, being you're from New Jersey and a Giants fan. Having been a fan since the early 70s, I also understand the disdain for much of the culture Jerry Jones has created in his tenure as the owner. The NFC East has always been a great division for the rivalries, and at any given time the contentiousness between any of the two teams has flared brightly. The Giants have a great historical track record, and in his time here, I had great respect for Bill Parcells. It was Jerry Jones and his unilateral decisions that I think were largely responsible for Parcell's early departure.

All that being said, I'm solidly on your side when it comes to the contests involving Direwolves and Game of Thrones!!

Ideally, Ryan would wind up taking the Buffalo job and haunting the Jets for a nice long time.

I heard Rex Ryan has indeed taken the Bills job so GRRM's rooting is working so far!

"... I like the Seahawks too. I had a very pleasant breakfast with their owner a few months ago..."

This doesn't surprise me. Fellow geeks and all. :)

I really hope that Seattle makes and wins the SB again this year.

Good luck for 'Game of Thrones' on Sunday!!

Awards
Intriguing to see Game of Thrones in competition with Downton Abbey, as I've occasionally tried to describe GoT to people as being "like Downton Abbey with disembowelling". I'm not sure what effect this has had on the audience for either show.

Paul Allen?
I would LOVE to hear about your pleasant breakfast with Paul Allen. Oh to have been at that table. . .!

Good luck
Good luck on the awards! Rex Ryan with Jim Schwartz as a DC in Buffalo is going to prove to be a STOUT defense next year - good land for Ryan. Looks like you'll remain coachless until the Seahawks tumble or win it all, D. Quinn would be a nice fit.
