Nipples Are Coming

Let's turn from the latest cheating scandal involving the New England Patriots to a much more pleasant subject: breasts.

It is completely legal and acceptable for men to go shirtless in public throughout the United States.  But in many states and cities, women do not have the same right.  And heaven forfend there should be a "wardrobe malfunction" during the SuperBowl or similar event that exposes the country to a brief split-second glimpse of a female nipple (actually a pastie, but don't confuse us with facts).  GAME OF THRONES is often slammed for showing too many breasts as well.  As are other cable shows.  And of course you can't show them at all on broadcast television.

Only in America.  Why do so many people in this country go mad at the sight of a nipple?

Anyway, this Friday at the Jean Cocteau we are screening FREE THE NIPPLE, the docudrama about the women who led the fight for nipple equality in New York City.

New Mexico is not New York, of course... but our Cocteau staff will be appropriately clad to honor the fearless women who are the subject of the movie.

And we'll have Nipple-cakes too!

See you at the movies.

This is such a conundrum to me as a European where one of the more memorable movie scenes to usually be brought up include a copulating couple in small boat filled to the rim with fish.

Why? Because nipples are what babies nurse from. Heaven forbid people are reminded of the functional use of the darn things. But to claim them solely as sexual object - part and parcel with the breast? Well, that's obscene and should be covered up like genetalia.

Don't you know this is how double standards work? Silly of you to think logically. Shame on you to use common sense.

And let's not even dip a toe into the whole argument about men's nipples and men deriving any pleasure from their own. That's... well... *whispers and looks about secretly* ... you know.

Irony is delicious
I find it humorous that television, movies etc wont bat an eyelash at showing gruesome violence, but will shy away from showing the human body. Of course, Im a fan of showing both things!

I might be in the background if they show the shots near the "Wall St Bull"
I didn't know what they were filming, but one day in the spring, a group of shirtless women were doing multiple takes running down Broadway shirtless toward the corner of Beaver St (there's a joke in there somewhere I think...). I happened to be walking back from lunch during this guerilla-style shoot so I might be in the background. If I showed up in this film, I wonder if the producers owe SAG some money for it ;) That reminds me, my dues are late.

It is completely legal for women to go topless in NYC, most people don't know that. And no, we weren't really phased when these women ran past during their takes, I was actually wondering what the big deal was--now I know.

I think this clip from Parks and Recreation should be included as well! ;)

I was involved in a discussion about nipples in a fan group a few months ago. I don't remember why it shifted to that subject but hey! Nipples! When I posted this PG-rated clip, which doesn't even *show* anything, the people involved freaked out. It's just a guy talking about nipples in the context of a pregnancy and then he gives them a really amusing alternative name (spoiler: "boob hats"). Apparently even talking about nipples is way too much for some people.

Only in America indeed. I don't get why female nudity is such a big taboo here, and I never have.

Everyone in the comment section is more than welcome to visit us here in Denmark. We're all shirtless in the parks in summer, female and male alike.

Absolutely
I know right. It would be really awesome if women had the freedom to express their breasts freely without getting arrested by the police. Allowing them to express themselves freely would both guarantee their liberty and also be fun for us men. Haha

DAMN, it's on like donkey kong, but full-on nipple style! George, if you need any help in the topless female department, I got a gaggle of ladiez on speed dial who take it off on a moment's notice. We'd be happy to supplement your staff if need by to support this truly epic and human rights-endeavor cause!

I have no problem with nudity (male or female) when it relates to the plot of a tv show or movie, but I do have a problem with it when it's clearly a desperate move to draw in more viewers. I think that's where many of the critiques of nudity in Game of Thrones come from too - not so much the fact that there is nudity, but that it was thrown in seemingly randomly just for the sake of having nudity. For example, it seems like every time the audience needs more backstory on a male character, it is delivered in a whorehouse scene. Because it's totally natural to talk about your relationship with your father while having a go with a prostitute, right?

And let's be honest, if we want to talk about double standards, the disproportionate ratio of female:male full nudity on GoT is a prime example.

Just another perspective. ;)

I agree. I do have no problem with nudity in TV shows or movies at all - if it fits the situation.

Just sometimes (not everytime, mind you) I cannot shake off the feeling the nudity is just there for itself, not for plot or character development, which I find a little sad.

The even bigger problem though (I mean, I can cope with a little extra nudity, I don't mind *that* much) - is as you said - the disproportionate ratio of female:male nudity. This is truly what goes on my nerves. Nobody counts if there has been one naked female more than a male one, but hontestly - how many minutes of naked male characters have we seen in comparison to female characters?
This is what comes closest to "sexism" if anything, considering the show. It's not about naked women, it's about the fact of the naked people showing up 90% are women, while there have been quite some plot/character opportunities to show male ones aswell.

My only issue with the nudity on Game of Thrones is that whether it's naked ladies or naked gay men--all the nudity seems intended for a male audience. Pretty sure the only non-gay male nudity we've seen is Hodor. I know it's cold at The Wall, but they can't stay dressed all the time...

Please consider that not all of us in the female audience are 100% heterosexual…

"New Mexico is not New York, of course... but our Cocteau staff will be appropriately clad to honor the fearless women who are the subject of the movie."

Hoping that there weren't any staff who, on potentially not feeling comfortable working in such (non)attire who were pressured verbally or nonverbally to do so, or who are missing out on wages because they weren't comfortable on that shift... until I got to that comment I was 100% for that, but the pressure to conform goes in all directions.

I also hope that the concessions stand staff are allowed to be appropriately attired to meet health and safety standards. I don't want ANYONE's topless body near my popcorn, and they likely don't want their nipples free to be burned by hot butter & rogue kernels.
