New Plans for an Old Building

We had a great press conference this morning at the old Silva Lanes, to announce plans for the long-shuttered bowling alley that I bought a few months ago.  Santa Fe Mayor Javier Gonzalez was on hand to help us launch the project, along with an army of artists, dreamers, and organizers from Meow Wolf, who initiated this sweet madness and will be speaheading the redevelopment.

Lots of reporters and photographers turned up, along with a couple of TV crews.  As their reports come in, I will post links here, for those who are interested.

Here's the ALBUQUERQUE JOURNAL:

Here's the Santa Fe NEW MEXICAN:

Marshall Thompson and Constructive Assets will be handling the renovation and repair of the huge structure on Rufina Circle, which was gutted years ago and has sat abandoned and empty for years.  Just fixing the infrastructure will require months of work.  But once the building is safe and habitable, Meow Wolf's army of amazing young artists will be moving in, to create what we think will be a truly incredible and original piece of immersive art, something that will entertain and enlighten adults and kids both: the House of Eternal Return.

It won't be cheap.  To that end, Meow Wolf has started a Kickstarter.  For a first glimpse of their plans, go to:

Needless to say, contributions are welcome, if you would like to be a part of this.

Congratulations and thank you for your work!
Congratulations for this project, good luck with everything! I am sure the people of your city and your fans fans all over will be most grateful and supportive! I will definitely see what I can contribute to the cause!
I also wanted to let you know that I went to one of the first "Game Of Thrones" IMAX screenings and it was a great experience! We also had Neil Marshall on hand to introduce the episodes! All in all a great time, thanks to you and your amazing work with "A Song Of Ice And Fire"! And of course the cast, crew, writers producers, directors and everyone else involved in the making of this phenomenal show!

Seldom interested in art-exhibits
I'm not usually super-jumpy about art exhibits and the art community in general - they're just not that great in Copenhagen. But I rather like this idea of a commune of artists having a building that they can develop and use to tell, perhaps, a continous narrative.

Will we be kept updated on the progress of this project?

Best of luck!
Whenever the Powerball starts getting big and I start daydreaming about what I might do if I actually had money, this sort of thing is always at the forefront. As a musician, mine is always more music oriented, but the idea is the same - reclaim a space and create a positive environment for young talent! Best of luck in your endeavours!

Other post
Hey, I saw your NFL post about the Patriots, but for some reason it won't let me comment on that one, what do you think the penalty should be for them? Also, I'm a Jacksonville fan, so I don't really care too much for Baltimore, but I'm getting really irritated with people focusing on the "they beat the Colts by so much, it doesn't matter" aspect. If they did it in that game, I would bet they did it in others as well, and the game against the Ravens was so close that it makes me really mad to think the Patriots may have given themselves a slight edge by using the deflated balls. Anyway, just wondering what you thought about it all at this point.

History must be preserved
I am fanatic about preservation and restoration. I hate to see history abandoned in favor of something new. Not that modern isn't worthwhile... but not at the expense of something significant.

My aim is to eventually make my way to your area and sample its history and green chili... right after I do my European tour of 2016.

hey George
On an entirely unrelated note,
I've been reading some articles following the upcoming season 5 of GoT today, and - again - some people commented on your pace of writing.

Just wanted to add some support to the "slow George" team - please go on taking as much time as you need to write the little gems of human psychology and amazing lessons in storytelling that we are so happy to read. I am very thankful to you, as I had lost the pleasure of being hooked to a story for years - that was before I started the Song of Ice and Fire.

Thank you for your inspiring work - and for your patience with impatients.

A book reader who'll only be happy with the books when you are.

Since you have resided in Santa Fe, NM for quite sometime would you have any idea of how old this building is exactly? Also was Silva Lanes Bowling the first and only tenant? I am an ardent supporter of preserving old buildings and will contribute to this cause in anyway I can, however I must know a brief history of the building, (what year it was built, the purpose, who were the previous tenants, etc.)

I have many personal friends that are private contractors some of which are located in the Rio Rancho - Albuquerque area. They may be able to help with the restructuring process.

It should be a fantasy bookstore...
The coolest bookstore ever. It should look like the Ghibli museum or the Red Keep or a fantasy version of Neuschwanstein castle. When Chinese tourists visit North America they should come to this bookstore first. Please think big!

And please put open bookshelves in every street...
And transform Santa Fe into the greatest town of books like Hay-on-Wye in Wales. https://www.pinterest.com/explore/hay-on-wye/

It doesn't talk about a time frame?

They hope to open in the fall.

But we have tons of construction and renovation to do before Meow Wolf can even move it. The building has been vacant for years, and needs to be repaired and brought up to code.

And if you have ever done construction, you'll know that it always takes longer (and costs more) than you estimate.
