Revis Returns!!!

After two years in exile, the best cornerback in the NFL is finally returning to the New York Jets.

It has been a long long time since fans of Gang Green had anything to celebrate, but the return of Darrelle Revis is definitely cause for a smile.

Of course, he should never have left. See my Not A Blog post of April 21, 2013. I said it all then: trading away the Jets best cause was sufficient cause for dumping our then-new GM, John Idzik. Time has proved me right. Now Idzik is gone and Darelle is back. It only cost us two years, two lost seasons, and a great coach, Rex Ryan.

Will Darrelle's return make the Jets a contender?

Well, one can dream... but I think it unlikely, unless it turns out Revis can also play quarterback. So long as we have Geno Smith and the Pats have Tom Brady, I can't see the Jets contending for the AFC East.

Elsewhere in the NFL... well, the Giants are looking better and better as well. Not because of anything they have done, but because of what's happening down in Philadelphia, where Chip Kelly seems to be systemically dismantling the Eagles. Hey, keep at it, Chip.

Brandon Marshall
Your Jets and my Bears also made a trade recently! Brandon Marshall was really good on the field, but he's caused enough trouble on three different teams to make them all want to trade him, too. Still, for just a 5th rounder, it should be low-risk for you guys.

I agree Jets still need a QB. It's the Colts that scare me.. Luck, Allen, Johnson, Hilton.. scary good offense.

You guys are making some good moves, the AFC East will be interesting next year. Maybe the Jets are secretly the team interested in trading a first round pick to Philly for Bradford? He would be an upgrade if he could stay healthy.

How is this possible?
Nothing good ever happens to the Jets! This has to be an April Fools joke... right?

Hah
I was just coming here with an intention to probe your feelings about the trade and here you are posting about it. Feels great! My #24 jersey is relevant again.

With kind regards

Jets New QB
You guys just traded for Ryan Fitzpatrick from the Texans, so I think the Jets just upgraded big time, but time will tell. I think the AFC East has gotten a lot better (or interesting at least) and will have a tighter race for the championship, though I would still put money on the Patriots winning 11+ games coming year.

Also, I wouldn't be so quick to write off what Chip Kelly is doing. If Bradford stays healthy (big if at this point) he could turn into a great QB, and I like that he is investing in the defense. I also liked the Giants picking up Shane Vereen from the Patriots, he should help Eli out a lot on 3rd down.

Also delighted about Revis being back as a Jets fan. Your thoughts on the other recents signings George? I definitely see Brandon Marshall as a very good addition to the team. Ryan Fitzpatrick is only a slight upgrade on the disaster that has been Geno, but I guess some competition at QB is better than none.

I really hope Mariota falls to us and we draft him, because at least he has a lot of potential, whether or not he realises it. Sadly, the potential of our current QBs is an 8-8 finish at best.

As for Chip... either he has completely lost his mind, or all these moves are somehow part of some master plan that no one else can see yet. I mean, how could Chip possibly be serious about Bradford as his franchise QB? The guy is either the Mad King or Tywin Lannister. Leaning towards the former... (sorry for the cheesy reference :p)

Either Chip is playing the deepest game anyone has ever seen, or he is playing a colossal joke on Philadelphia, or he is in way over his head and has screwed the pooch. I hope it's the first one and suspect it's the third.

All due respect George, Chip Kelly is a God amongst men. If I owned the Giants, I would just give him the team if that's what it took to get him to come to NY. Has gone 20-12 with two back up QBs (Eagles had been 12-20 in two previous seasons). The McCoy move was genius, running back is the most overvalued position in the NFL and he got a very good young line backer in return and freed up salary to get the corner from Seattle. Also the Bradford move was smart, take a gamble there and if it doesn't work out you have Sanchez who is serviceable in his system (his system is so good even Mace Tyrell could throw for 30 TDs and 4000 yards in it).

Hah...and right as I say that he goes out and signs two injury prone backs for a lot of money. Still think he's a genius though.

Congrats on the return of the prodigal son! Now we just have to wrestle you for the next decent QB who comes on the market...

Ah, come on, at least Tannehill has shown some promise! 92.8 QBR and a 27-12 TD to INT count last year is far above what Hoyer, Fitzpatrick, Geno, Sanchez et al could hope to produce. Good QBs are ridiculously hard to find these days, and you guys are a lot better off than a lot of teams in that regard (and certainly better off than Gang Green ;))

I agree we're not at the bottom (Tanehill last I saw was ranked 11th in the league) but we keep hearing "shows some promise" and then we keep losing fourth quarters and thus games

Not just him returning, but the rumor is that Cromartie coming back is also a strong possibility. So the dumpster fire they had at corner back last year should be greatly improved.

Still doesn't change that they REALLY seem to want Geno "godsdammit why did you DO that??" Smith to be the long term answer he hasn't come close to proving he can be... but definitely (along with Suh to Miami) makes the AFC-E more interesting this year.

NY JETS MAR 12
Im with you on this, the big question is whether Mariota is available at #6 and if he is, does the brain trust think he's worth it?

Better pay, more vacation. What more could a guy ask for?
I can see the attraction for Revis. Just like my parents, he now gets to pack his bags at the end of December each year and head for warmer climes. Good luck, Darelle, and thanks for the championship!

The Jets tamper and deliver their guy...
Wondering how you feel about all that guaranteed money? If that ACL tweaks the Jets have no outs. None. 3 years later they will still be paying. As a Pats fan I accept Bill may be evil and little but he is no dummy. The Pats will still have depth when other teams falter to injury. Why? They don't sign bad deals.

Re: The Jets tamper and deliver their guy...
The same could be said of any player who is guaranteed money. Anyone can suffer a career-ending injury at any time in the NFL.

And no one ever said that Evil Little Bill is a dummy. If all you care about is winning, at any cost, he's your man.

Re: The Jets tamper and deliver their guy...
at any cost

Oh c'mon George, as a pats fan this "cheating" talk is ridiculous. Granted spygate was a real thing that the patriots were penalized for, but let's not forget that all the patriots did wrong was videotape from the wrong spot in the stadium, something the jets have been guilty for in the past (To be fair, there wasn't a rule explicitly against it when the Jets were caught doing it). Let's also replace "deflategate" with other fun phrases like "Goodellgate" or "GrigsonGate" until the Well's report comes out.

Also, I was on board for McCoy-for-Alonso, but Chip's really starting to make me scratch my head (Maxwell at $10M a year, Bradford-for-Foles, and signing Murray for $8M a year? Granted Murray's a great player but you just don't pay that much for running backs). Hopefully we (The patriots :]) can get Mathis for cheap. I hope Vereen and Revis do well on their new teams, but the Jets and Giants have too many holes to make any noise or even the playoffs for that matter. No offense to the Dolphins fan above me who seems like a pretty chill dude but the Fins don't scare me. They always "win" free agency but "lose" when it matters and its no big secret why. Look at this offseason for example. They signed Hartline, Ellerbe, and Wheeler two years ago just so they could compete with the pats. Now they cut all 3 (and almost mike wallace who had an albatross of a contract to begin with), and are stuck with about $12M in dead money this year. Not only that, but they spent $20M on a d-lineman in his late 20's when they had a damn good YOUNGER, HOMEGROWN d-lineman in Jared Odrick that they let sign with Jacksonville for about $10M less per year. The dolphins always draft well and I actually like Tannehill but Steven Ross can't help himself when it comes to free agency.

Im terribly sorry for rambling but I just couldn't help it Mr. Martin, I'm a huge fan of your work and I probably spent a good 20 minutes carefully crafting this comment as you would one of your books. Season 5 looks amazing and the wait for son of Kong has me foaming at the mouth, but the sleepless nights spent figuring out what it all means will be here soon enough. Thank you George for all you've done and for staying so connected with fans!

Mr. Martin you are far and away my favorite author. That being said I am also an unforgiving and faithful Eagles fan to which I am forced to respond to this blog entry as such: I guarantee that my Eagles will not only win their first super bowl before your Giants or Jets win anither but they will also do so before your series is completed and published. Again thanks for all you do, lay off the Eagles.

Re: ouch
The optimism of a true fan is beautiful to behold. Maybe you understand what Chip Kelly is doing. No one else does. But I do hope your Eagles beat the Cowboys twice this coming season.

Ryan Fitzpatrick Will be the Jets starting quarterback in 2015 wow that Might not be the most exciting name he has gotten better every season as a starter is only 32 years old and has experience in this offense under Chan Gailey in Buffalo. Vinny Testaverde was 35 years old when he joined the Jets and had his best season. Fitzpatrick is a Harvard grad and has a tremendous beard. His nicknames include Fitzmagic and The Lorax. He's the best QB we've had in a long time and is fully capable of taking this team to the playoffs with the weapons they have put around him. His kid is also a rising genius as you can see from this clip http://youtu.be/KjMeDfYWRu8

Fly Eagles fly
As a life long Eagles fan - all of 41 years - I will say it's an odd off season. At first I knew the rest of the east was content sitting back and watch chip fly of the rails and gather all of his ducks in a row. Now I just have to sit back and see what the madness brings - waiting another 6 months. Isn't that the mantra of every fan? Last I remember my team hasn't won a Super Bowl lately - so maybe a little shake up is in order. Either it'll turn out to be pure genius and build a winning tradition - or he'll be gone in a couple of years (or both) - either way the only thing that really matters is beating Dallas, the Giants and the team from Washington. But most especially the demarco less Cowboys.

I thought you were a Giants fan! They also got Cromartie back and may get Marcus Mariota, which I do admit would be kind of exciting. I'll wait to see about the Giants, I'm so annoyed at them right now.

Funny news though, Tebow might go to the Eagles... poor Sanchez XD
