The Calendar Is Coming

I won't be at this year's San Diego Comicon, alas. Had to miss the fun, but there's too much work to do, and I know that HBO and Random House and Tor have matters well in hand, with lots of great events and promotions.

Which is not to say I won't be represented: the 2016 edition of the Official SONG OF ICE AND FIRE Calendar will be making its debut at San Diego. I was lucky enough to snag an advance copy.

This year the artwork is by the amazing and talented French artist, MAGALI VILLENUEVE, whose past work includes some terrific contributions to Fantasy Flight's games and the WORLD OF ICE AND FIRE concordance. Check out more of her work at http://magali-villeneuve.blogspot.com/ and http://www.magali-villeneuve.com/

The calendars will be available at the Random House/ Bantam/ Del Rey booth at San Diego, so be sure and look them before the supply is gone. Magali has done some gorgeous work here; I expect you will love it as much as I do.

In GOT winter comes every 10 years. And Starks say winter is coming. In reality, after 7 month later winter comes. LOL.
Spring: Winter is coming
Summer: Winter is coming
Autumn: Winter is coming
Winter: Look outside the doors walkers are waiting for you!

Image of Son of Kong in the calendar
Hi George!
As I recall, the calendar would show an image from The Winds of Winter. Is is true? And it's an image from one of the chapters we already know - from readings or excerts in your web or app - or something completely original?

Thanks in advance for everything!

Re: Image of Son of Kong in the calendar
The official Penguin Random House's page for the calendar has a small sample, you can see the image there. Don't want to say who it is in case people don't want to be spoiled before they get their own copy.

*heavy breathing*
Awesome! I don't suppose they'll be sold in other countries? Looks like some real eye candy. And... wait is that a White Walker's head lying there? O_o

I'm submitting a panel to New York Comic Con (in real life I have an MA in medieval History) - any small chance you will come to NYCC? The TV writers weren't able to come to SDCC either...I wonder if they'll make up for it by coming to my hometown convention.
Jul. 9th, 2015 09:50 pm (UTC)
Unlikely, I am afraid. Right now I am cancelling appearances, not adding them.
Jul. 10th, 2015 12:02 am (UTC)
I'm assuming you're the GOH & will make Sasquan & Bubicon. Is it too far out in the future to ask whether you're still planning to attend Mysticon & Balticon? A few of us from the ASOIAF subreddit have been weighing whether to purchase tickets for attending those cons. Obviously, your presence would tip the scales towards YES votes. :)
Jul. 10th, 2015 04:49 pm (UTC)
Yes, I am still planning on attending Mysticon and Balticon.

Those are in 2016, to be sure. A zillion years away.

Art from TWOW
Hey George! Is it true that the calendar contains artwork depicting a scene from The Winds of Winter?
Jul. 9th, 2015 10:21 pm (UTC)
I'm quite excited to get my copy of the calendar!

Is that Ser Duncan's sigil in the background I see? A lot of other awesomeness in this photo, too, there's tiny-you & an Other (or I guess a White Walker since it's the show's depiction) down there, plus the great dragon egg cookie jar in the background!

Amazing Art
Wow, it looks gorgeous. It's so amazing to me how artists can bring your literary masterpieces to life. I guess that's why they're artists. I'm definitely getting one. Thanks for sharing.

Gorgeous cover!!
Can't wait to check out the interior art. Last year's calendar was amazing.

BTW, I'm re-reading (actually, re-listening to the audio of) ASOIAF, and the depth and complexity of the plot and characters is just mind-blowing. Thank you for this awesome contribution to our culture. I never thought I'd say this of any author, but I do believe you have exceeded Tolkien.

I did not know that Magali was doing the art for this year's calendar. I play the card game and her art always stands out. She has also done my absolute favorite illustration of the Red Viper: http://www.cardgamedb.com/forums/uploads/76239072d19ece95dc6d4a8eaf6680cf.jpg

That's gotta be my favorite rendition of the Others that I've seen (and I look around for that kind of thing a lot). Magali Villenueve works magic - I hope there's a Dornish-themed piece in there.

When it will be available in Egypt ?!. You have a pretty big fanbase in Egypt and by miracle we can find your work in our country not counting song of ice and fire novels which is available everywhere in bookstores. I'm talking about world of ice and fire , tales of dunk and egg , wild cards , calendars and map books

thank you and take your time finishing son of kong I wish you the best for changing the fantasy genre .

One of these years I would love to visit Egypt.

Calendar looks awesome
The calendar looks great! Can't wait to pick it up. By chance is the "son of Kong" release date marked in the calendar for us?! Only half joking!! Thanks for staying strong and patiently talking to your fans via this site and continuing to work on A song of ice and fire under immense pressure. I can't imagine how tough it is to try and enjoy the life being a successful and genius author has afforded you while constantly being bombarded about when winter will come! Very Ironic in a lot of ways. "Heavy is the crown"! Thanks again your grace of westeros and beyond and hope to enjoy some of your other books. Read all of the Dunc and Eggs. Where should I start of the "wildcard" books? Haven't read any of them nor do I know much about em? Any suggestions. Sorry for taking up your time!

For Wild Cards... start with either WILD CARDS or INSIDE STRAIGHT.

Re: Calendar looks awesome
Thank you your Majesty. I will order them asap and check them out. I've read a small clip about the books a long time ago and it seems like it was set in world war 2 era and do to a weapon people mutated some into superheroes, others into villains, and some into absolutely nothing or something useless. Gonna go back and check that out again but the premise for the books seems really cool if that'a even close to it. Having been in the army from 18 years old right after 9/11 until a couple years back when I was retired medically due to injuries sustained in combat I've become a bit of a history buff. Especially world war 2. Throw in some sci-fi due to my pops hippie nature and raising me on Star Trek, Dune, quantum leap lol, etc this sounds like a good fit for me. Anyways like I said before really cool you take the time to talk to us loyal fans when you get time and even when you don't have time. So far every book I've read that's had your name on it somewhere has been outstanding. Thanks again My Leige!

Hi George!

First I should ask for pardon, because my english knowledge is very bad, sorry. And so I beg for Permiss to put some Questions to you without courtesy because I cannot express myself in English with all required things.

Thank you und many greetings from Moscow.

No problem with your English... but I am afraid I prefer not to answer questions about ICE & FIRE. You can discuss these points with fellow fans on boards like Westeros.com and Tower of the Hand.
Jul. 11th, 2015 12:50 am (UTC)
You are very kindly with my English, thank you. And many thanks for the answer and the referencies, but I haven't any account bei those sites, I cannot even open Westeros.com. It requires an log in, but gives no registration. (((

By TotH I've seeked - it is so good as nothing. Bei Westeros.org (wiki) there is also nothing about it, even Zero theories about this Person - or I haven't find it. Although I haven't seeked the board yet, but I think it should be also in Wiki - and it isn't.

And it means to me - only few People think in this direction (sure not only I). And that means - you've very good hide it. Although when man gives a Little bit more Attention to this by fans underpriced Person, man understands it is only one answer - yes. And only one important word. Dracarys.

Many thanks for your wonderful books. Have a nice Weekend!

TWoW Tour
Hi, George. I enjoy your books very much and am a big fan.

I was wondering if you are going to do a promo tour once you have finished The Winds of Winter like you did for the other books. Have a nice day. :)
Jul. 10th, 2015 04:52 pm (UTC)
Re: TWoW Tour
I will do some promotion, certainly. Whether it will be a full-on book tour, as with previous volumes, remains to be seen.

Re: TWoW Tour
Thank you for your answer. Hopefully you will come to London. :)
Jul. 12th, 2015 05:32 pm (UTC)
Re: TWoW Tour
IMO TWoW will be a book that will tour itself. I'm sure most marketing types would put me up against the wall for this, but if there ever was a book in need of little to no promotion, it's this one. I would hope you would take a vacation or a break instead of a full fledged tour. The obligatory promo stuff, sure, but I hope you resist the pressure for a tour, and take some personal time.

Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think a tour would boost sales a whole lot, which will be great due to the anticipation and popularity of the series, especially since GoT aired.
