Home Alone

Well, not really alone. Parris is here, and my minions, and the Cocteau staff, and the cats... but I am not in San Diego at Comicon, and I have to admit, that feels strange.

Staying home was the right decision. I just got back from Chicago and the Dead shows, and before that it was Europe, and it is hardly as if HBO needed me in San Diego to represent... not with so much of our cast on hand. I have so much work to do, I am way behind on everything, and I have a wedding to attend in Jersey in a few weeks, and worldcon after that... and if truth be told, San Diego has gotten overwhelming in recent years. There are always good times catching up with friends, and hanging with the cast, but it's not as if I can walk the floor anymore and look for old comic books, the way I once did.

Even so... even so... it does make me a little sad, not being there.

Anyway, those of you who are there, be sure and catch THE EXPANSE premiere. I wish I could. Everything I've seen suggests that it will be a terrific show. The books were certainly great. Say hi to Daniel and Ty for me.

You might also visit the Random House booth to buy a calendar, and drop by the Tor/ Macmillan booth to buy a stack of books and show your support.

Man, if there is one occasion where you could walk the floor of a public place, it's in a convention. Get yourself a chewbacca mask and have fun, next time. It will be way less weird in #SDCC than if you ever want to see the Red Square in Moscow and use the same cosplay/disguise :-)

Supporting Tor
Boycotts in general seem to be counter-productive these days. It seems that every time some group says they are going to boycott something for political reasons, the loyal opposition show up in force and it ends up as a very large boon for the boycotted. Think how much business Chick-fil-a got when a boycott was called for. People who don't believe the same way as Truitt Cathy or particularly like chicken showed up to support free speech. I suspect the Tor boycott will end much the same way. Lots of people will buy books that they might not have otherwise.

Don't Worry, next year you can go while we're reading the Son of Kong. I was thinking, if TWoW is Son of Kong, I can't imagine who will be ADoS. Son of Cthulhu??

Greetings from Chile

Yep! That's sad...
But don't put all his sadness and frustration in the Son of Kong killing more characters!

Don't think about it! *whispers*

Greetings from Honduras, you know, that little country in Central America. Just wanted to tell you I just bought the first dunken and egg book. Its kinda hard to find your books other than ASOIAF in local stores. Anyway huge fan of your work, and just so you know, i'm not alone over here, you have a huge fanbase too. Hopefully you can visit our beautiful country one day.

Internet
One interesting thing about the Internet era is that events like Comic-Con are heavily documented between YouTube, Instagram, Twitter and the like. I know it's not the same as going somewhere and experiencing it firsthand, but sometimes I don't feel like I'm missing out, you know?

Random House
I love Random House! My rep when I was at Borders (how's that for dating this story) use to bring me hand selected ARCs every time he came to visit and give me an update on Dance (when it still had the cute green cover). I found him again when I went to Independent bookselling. He hand picked me ARCs then too. He retired with the merger though. Random House Ron was the best rep ever.

Respect and...Godzilla
George u are never alone, all our fans love u, with their respect ad admiration for your willingness to finish Son of Kong. There is only one thing that i want to say .. is better Godzilla than King Kong. Yes is not a monkey, but it makes a better idea Son of Godzilla for the book....or not?

How did you enjoy the Dead shows? Did you have good seats? I saw the Dead at the Garden with Jerry back in the old days and those shows were amazing!

Random Question from Sci-fi Fan
Mr. Martin,

New fan, first time posting. I was reading the archives of your blog, and I noticed way back in January when all the hullabaloo with people connecting Winds with the new Star Wars flick, you mentioned that you didn't like Return of the Jedi as much as Episodes 4 and 5.

As a total Star Wars geek myself, I gotta ask - What didn't you like about Jedi? It's my favorite of them all, though I understand why people say Empire is the best.

Random question, I know, but this post didn't seem to have a specific topic, so this didn't strike me as "off-topic," which I know you discourage.

Anyhoo, thanks for looking, and your work. Best of luck to you with your busy schedule.

Re: Random Question from Sci-fi Fan
Well, for one thing, the whole "blowing up the Death Star" plot did not work for me. We'd seen that in the first STAR WARS, we did not need to see it again. They should have come up with a new and better Big Bad, rather than just another Death Star.
