Leavin' On A Jet Plane

Off to the sizzling hot east coast in a few hours.

Remember, all, Hugo voting closes TOMORROW.

I am closing down comments on my posts but this one, so I won't have hundreds of scattered messages to deal with on my return.

Those of you in NY and NJ and thereabouts... see you at the Direwolves game, I hope.

Those of you in NM... don't miss the launch party for DINOSAUR LORDS at the Cocteau.

And while I will be travelling, my army on minions will be here at the old homestead, toiling in the paper mines.

I live in Staten Island, and it is disgusting right now with this heat, been like this all week, and supposed to be a few more days till it breaks. The humidity is terrible.

Let's go Direwolves!
Enjoy your trip your Grace. Know that while you travel the realm the Kingdom of Arkansas is being held for you by the Hillbilly Wolf Ser Caleb Stark (Caleb would be a great name for a main character in a song of ice and fire... Just saying lol) of Little Rock or "Summerfell" as I like to call it. We cannot afford to lose anymore Starks so I am contacting the children of the Forrest to see if we can get a green dream and find out if additional magic will be needed to insure the Direwolves prevail in battle over the kitty cats. Alright I've taken up enough of your time with my nerdy fandom comments. Hope your trip goes well. Have fun your grace and enjoy yourself!!!

Have a great trip! On all fronts and accounts, especially with the ditors and publishers...that's all I'll say for now.

And if you happen to expereince that nasty-ass heat & humidity, that's a typical summer / 'bad summer day' here in Ottawa - though nowhere enar as bad. Often it times its 'high 20s, feels like mid-high 30s' due to that damnable humidity.

I considered leaving a link to the youtube video of Ben Affleck singing "leaving on a jetplane" badly out of tune from that scene in Armageddon.

Safe travels George.

Go Wolves!

Safest of the safe journeys...
May gravity properly do it's job by keeping you in the air when needed, and bring you down slowly when the journey is done.

May all of those who recognize you on the street not ask you annoying, redundant questions about (certain books/TV shows/dead heroes).

May you be allowed to enjoy the game and voraciously as the shirtless drunk barbarians of NYC/NJ (Bonus: May you feel encouraged to be a shirtless drunk Barbarian in the case it's super hot)

May the worker Minions suddenly not devour tomes of manuscripts for no reasons. For this would suck.

Hi George,

So here is my question. How important do you think the essay is, especially the college essay? I've never aspired to be a writer, but I love to write. And now that I'm back in school as a middle aged man, I'm finding out about the different formats and such. Do you use MLA formatting? Can you craft a business letter with the best of them.? I was going to ask Bently Little, but I've been stuck in Westros for sometime now. Is the writing process meant to be this challenging? According to Roy Humble, I'm just a silly student writer. Even when I get A's on essays, I feel I'm "not getting it". By the way I only wanted to be a horticulturist. Sorry for the random question on your page.

Thanks,
Nathan

This is just my opinion and observation, but there IS a standard format most publishers, editors, and so forth like to see their submissions written in.

So far as "not getting it", I think that depends on what you're writing, and who you are writing it for. I too returned to further my education later in life, I worked as a contractor/trainer in Canada, the USA, and the mid east until becoming disabled. I'm now a student in a completely new field through distance learning at Stanford in the CS department/AI lab, but my main passion has become writing as well, which sounds like a similar situation to yourself.

If you're getting A's in school now with your work, and if you truly love writing as you said, maybe it's time to take a crack at writing some short fiction. You have a wide variety of people on this blog interested in a wide variety of things. I'd be happy to read anything you punch out, as would many others.

Glad you're here at GRRM's NAB.

Best Regards.

You've got to be thrilled
about having Ian McShane on cast. I remember your love for Deadwood when it was on air. He would make a FANTASTIC Euron.

Happy dance!

Re: You've got to be thrilled
Oooooh, I didn't even think of Euron for him but man he would be great for the part. I guess I've despaired that we would never see the character on the show, but McShane is so right for the role this gives me some hope!

Hi George,

I'm an artist working on a short graphic novel depicting Victarion boarding Ser Talbert Serry's ship from, "The Reaver" chapter.

I am not making it to then go out and sell it; I am simply just a big fan of your work and thought it would be a great scene to illustrate.

I wanted to ask before I put more time into the project--what is your stance on fans using your copyrighted work for a project like this?

Thanks,
Josh

While I appreciate your enthusiasm, I am afraid this is not something I can allow.

Like any other subsidiary rights, graphic novel/ comic book rights are under license. Random House controls the rights for Ice & Fire and the third Dunk & Egg novel, Jet City Comics the rights for the first two. They pay me good money for those rights; any other graphic novels or comics constitute copyright infringement.

Ian McShane!!! Hope the wedding was wonderful and the football glorious...but Ian McShane!

Here's to hoping we get another Hardhome-esque set of episodes with him in whatever role he plays.
