The NFL Returns

The NFL is back. Was I ready for some football?

Ah... er... not really. The season somehow snuck up on me. Too busy, I guess. I only managed to watch one preseason game, hardly paid any attention at all, and suddenly the first game was upon us.

The Jets were pretty impressive, thumping the Cleveland Browns and Johnny Football.

The Giants... oh, ghod, what can I say? That loss to the hated Cowboys was excruciating. I can't deny that Tony Romo was brilliant on that final game-winning drive, especially in the absence of Dez Bryant... but Dallas did not win the game. It was given to them. First by the ref, who made an absolutely bogus pass interference call that resulted in a Cowboy touchdown. And then by Eli Manning, who lost track of the Dallas timeouts and actually told Rashad Jennings not to score when the G-Men had the ball on the Dallas one, first and goal, with under two minutes left.

One timeout, two timeouts, does it matter? Jennings gets that ball in, the game is over. A TD there makes it a 10-point game, and the Cowboys would not have had time enough to score twice.

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot.

Overall, the Giants D and the Jets O both looked better than anticipated.

I do wonder if the G-Men can bounce back from a gut-wrenching loss like that. One that they inflicted on themselves.

Another Bran
How nerdgasmy was it to have a guy named Brandon score for the Jets?

Couglin on the hot seat again?
Well, if Coughlin's on the hot seat again - NYG is going to the SB again!

Tom Coughlin
Coughlin will get them back on track. I believe he's a master of handling and overcoming tough situations. But, hopefully not next week. Admittedly, I am a Falcons fan. Rise Up!!

If Dallas didn't win that game then the Giants didn't score those points off turnovers... They were given to them 😈

Eli made a ron stark error.
And Fitzpatrick is the jets Maester. Has a chain around his neck and all.

Now wait just a dang minute
Are you both a Jets AND a Giants fan?!

I didn't think that was tolerated in NYC, it's like here in Kentucky being a UofL and UK fan -- simply does not compute!

But, yes, that Giants loss must have been heartbreaking for those wishing them well (I, myself, am a Bengals fan, so I'm not ashamed in experiencing a little schadenfreude at the misery of other fanbases). Jennings has since said that he was told on first and second down NOT to score -- which, if true, would make this more maddening than heartbreaking. What was Coughlin thinking?

Cleveland Browns
I live in Cleveland and that game was embarrassing to watch. CRINGEWORTHY.

Re: Cleveland Browns
I'm also a lifelong Cleveland fan. That was quite embarrassing. I thought the team was going to be quite a bit better than that. There were some promising moments (literally, a moment or two) but overall that was as comically bad as we've come to expect from the team. :(

And why would Eli Manning throw it on 3rd down!? Could of run the clock another 40 seconds if they ran it!!! Very frustrating!!!!

Fitz or Geno
What do you think George?

Fitzmagic seemed to play pretty well. You think Geno gets thrown/forced back into the starting lineup when his face is feeling better? Or you think Fitzy stays in the lineup until he has a bad game, regardless of Geno's health. My guess - Geno sees the field week 5.

Where was Wun Wun?
and why oh why did Eli not run down the clock on each snap?! Felt like every snap on the last drive happened with 10-20 seconds left on the play clock. Would have been so nice to start the season with a win against the Cowboys.

Nah.
We beat you. The score was only close because Dallas couldn't remember that holding onto the ball was important. Take out the turnovers and the Giants get blown out. I suspect the second game will bear this out.

Still, give the Giants back Cruz and allow the O-line to work out the kinks and the Giants could make some noise.

0-1
0-1 isn't too bad, but 0-2 starts to get tricky. Still, Eli's earned enough credibility in winning after 9-7 type seasons that they should be able to bounce back from the Dallas loss, no problem. Especially since it was on the road and the next time they have Dallas, it's in East Rutherford.

I'm trying to decide who's the biggest question mark. Does thumping the Manziel-led Browns really qualify as a convincing win? You might say the Giants keeping it close on the road was just as impressive.

Dez Bryant out for at least 3 weeks
As a Cowboys fan, I am of course glad we won. But it is very bittersweet because Dez Bryant had to have surgery on his foot and is out at least 3 weeks...and it's the type of injury that can linger for awhile so could be much, much longer.

At least former Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray, now on the Eagles, had a bad game with 8 attempts for 9, NINE!, yards. We can both be happy about the Eagles struggling.

Jets game
Hi George,

Jets season ticket holder here, in the luxurious Lexus club (2nd) level. We'd love to have you out for a game this season. Perhaps the Bills game? A good chance to enjoy some revenge on Rex Ryan for choosing to coach a division rival.

Re: Jets game
I do go to the games when I am in the city during the season.

Last year I went to the Buffalo game, and Geno threw three INTs in the first quarter.

Now I am thinking I had better stay away.

As a Lions fan...
Sure the Giants blundered away a victory. But at least they didn't look perfect for twenty minutes before allowing 30 straight points. I saw an Eagles fan complaining about his team on Facebook, so I posted this:
Oh, my sweet summer child. What do you know of fear? Fear is for the football season, my little lord, when the Lions lose all sixteen games and the ice wind comes howling out of Lambeau Field. Fear is for the long night, when the playoffs hides its face for years at a time, and little children are born and live and die without seeing a post season victory while the Lions grow gaunt and hungry, and the Packers move through the woods.

I was impressed with the Giants despite the bone headed mistake at the end. Surprised at the D in particular, too bad JPP had to Davos himself or could've been even better.

As for the comment above on the Eagles, I am sorry George but Chip Kelly is a God amongst men and Tom Coughlin should not be mentioned in the same sentence as him. This is coming from a Giants fan. It's only a matter of time before the Eagles start winning super bowls. Hopefully we have one more wacky Super Bowl run in us.

Down and out in Chicago
So nobody watched that debacle that was The Bears and Greenbay?
Honestly, though, The Bears looked a helluva lot better in this loss than they did in any game last season. I'm just excited that it's back!

The Jets looked very good...
...but I still think that they might be a good QB away from greatness.

I do think that Fitz is an improvement over Geno.

The Hayne Plane
Hi from Down Under,
Just wondering if you've had a chance to watch Jarryd Hayne in action for the 49ers? Sure, he has a lot to learn about NFL but he seems to have made a promising start, don't you think?
In any case, it's a great promo of NFL - suddenly Aussies are tuning in to watch American Football.

Re: The Hayne Plane
I was at the 49ers-Cowboys preseason game at Levi's Stadium. I had a great time watching Hanye! I think that the stadium was more excited when he played than when the rest of the team was playing. You can't help but cheer for a "Rocky Down Under" type of story like this.

Future Superbowl
Murphy's Law states that everything that can happen will happen.

Bearing that in mind, who will you root for when the Giants and the Jets face each other in the world's first "subway bowl"?

George, you and I are at the opposite sides of the spectrum when it comes to our favorite NFL teams. I am a die hard Patriots fan while you (if I remember correctly from your posts last season) are the quintinsenial SeaHawks Fan!!(MARSHAWN ). What is your take on an Aug3rd federal court overturning an earlier courts decision to bench Brady for 4 games? Of course the league is appealing the decision. Regardless , do you believe Brady and the Pats were treated fairly by the league? The same judge said that the Patriots had every right to rehire their equipment managers and a ball boy who were implicated in "inflate bowl". The patriots rehired the members of staff this week. I wondered what your thought are on the ongoing drama?

Re: Justice
I am a Giants and Jets fan. I rooted for the Seahawks in the SuperBowl because they were playing the hated Patriots.

I think the Patriots have been cheating for more than a decade, ever since Evil Little Bill came aboard. Sometimes they get away with it, sometimes they don't. Even when they don't break the rules, they stretch them.

RE: Re: Justice
I know George but what is one to do having been taught from the womb that the Patriots are Godlike? The exile from familial bonds would be excruciating. The lonely Sundays, not to mention the grief during playoffs! And forget about the Super Bowls, I don't think I would ever be forgiven. I look forward to the rest of the season to see what shenanigans Evil Little Bill gets up to. I will also watch closely when your beloved Giants and Jets play throughout the rest of the season. There is always room for some good natured ribbing to take place and there is certainly room for every man, woman and child to love their teams. But I force you to admit that Tom Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL! There you see "good natured ribbing" and it didn't hurt a bit. Like you the answer to the age old question : "Are you ready for some FOOTBALL ?? Was sort of no this year but let's get back in the swing of things and answer a resounding YES!! Cheers!!

Re: Justice
Hey George. First time, long time.

Oy, not you too. Winning breeds contempt. Actually, you can argue the Seahawks are the biggest cheaters. They lead the league in penalties, and what are penalties for? For holding, for interference, for late hits. For CHEATING. Yet they say flat-out they're not going to stop because they know the refs can't flag every play without the game grinding to a halt. They're the ones who game the system, more so than the Patriots.

Take it easy.
