Hedge Knight In the Lists

Cool news from both sides of the Atlantic.

The new illustrated hardcover of A KNIGHT OF THE SEVEN KINGDOMS has debuted on the NEW YORK TIMES bestseller list as #2 in hardcover fiction. Over in the UK, the British edition has landed as #3 on the TIMES list (Bernard Cornwell's new Uhtred novel is number 1, of course).

Pretty good for a collection of three previously published novellas.

My thanks go out to all my friends at Bantam Spectra and Harper Voyager... and of course to Gary Gianni, whose gorgeous artwork helped make the book such a rousing success.

This is awesome news! I'm so excited about more folks becoming familiar with this prequel to ASOIAF! Are you working on Dunk and Egg in parallel with TWOW?

The pictures make it
I love these stories and read them all in the various anthologies in which they appear, but having them all together in one place is really cool. The pictures REALLY make them! Super fun to read. Love seeing Dunk's sigil!!

Got it downloaded to the NOOK and can't wait to start it this weekend. Love all you write and trust me, I am old enough and geeky enough to know. (as an aside, sorry you lost to Zelazny all those years ago, but I think he is also the cream of the crop
I'll let you know when I finish, not that you give a goats bobo. :)

I love finally having the three stories in one book, and the illustrations really added to the experience. Kudos to Gary Gianni! It made it feel like reading one of Howard Pyle's books, if he were still around!

I just got mine last week
It's such a beautiful book. Holding off reading it right away as I'm savoring the moment. However congratulations on it's #2 positioning. It would be fun to see if HBO has intentions for this guy down the road

I saw the nice coffee-table edition (hardback) in my book shop in Copenhagen, at least it felt anf looked like a coffee-table book. My point, it's really really nice!

I bought the hardback from the bookshop last weekend, and finished it last night. Unlike, it seems, most other people, I had never read any of the D&E stories before. I have to say, I absolutely bloody loved them! While I adore the main A Song of Ice and Fire series, there's just something about these stories; the way they marry the spirit of classic adventure tales with rich mythology and enough grit and realism to keep things grounded. At the end of a long day, this is the exactly the kind of book I want to get lost in until the small hours.

The only problem was, at the end I wanted more!

Is the next D&E story finished?

Re: D&E

Of course not.

If it was, it would have been published. I don't sit on finished material.

The illustrations are amazing. Got a chance to meet Gary Gianni at NYCC last week, such a nice guy and very talented as well. Was able to show my appreciation in person. Kudos to the person who made the decision to have him illustrate the book.

Hey George,

Which version of the shield on the covers would you say more accurately reflects the coloring of Dunk's shield in the books, the British or American?

How's the audiobook doing?
The narration is unbelievably great - and the stories get better on each pass. Is Harry Lloyd going to do TWoW if Roy isn't able?

What to read first?
First time commenting on the board. I have a question for anyone who has read "The World of Ice & Fire: The Untold History" and the three novellas of Dunk and Egg. I have been saving both books to read once I finish "A Dance with Dragons" (which should be in the very near future). My question is which book should I read after ADWD? Would it be wise to read about Dunk and Egg before reading the history or vice versa?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Congrats on your new Bestseller, Mr. Martin!

Loved the book!
Thanks so much! I preordered for Kindle, and although I'd rather have the paper book, it was a pleasant surprise to see the book suddenly appear on my phone. Of course I binged it, so now starving for more.

I loved Tanselle, and want to meet her whole company! Any chance for Puppeteer of the Seven Kingdoms?

Really nice and clean design. I think it fits well. I have a question though. How important do you think cover design is to a book?
Oct. 18th, 2015 09:43 pm (UTC)
Congratulations on landing in the list!

A British question: Any idea if/when this comes out as a paperback? All the rest of my ASOIAF books are paperbacks and I'd be gutted if I had to ruin my set with just the one hardback lol. Mind you I'm tempted to get it anyway.. (the thirst is real).
Oct. 18th, 2015 10:34 pm (UTC)
Re: Paperbacks?
It will come out as a paperback eventually, I am sure. Just when depends on a number of factors.

FWIW, the impact of the artwork will be somewhat diminished when it is shrunken down to mass market size.
