Life is miserable and full of pain... when you're a Mets fan.

Fifteen years between trips to the World Series. The Mets are finally back, and then...

Those were two excruciating losses. In completely different ways. Hard to say which one was more painful.

The only consolation... the Mets were down 0-2 to the Red Sox in '86 too, and that year they lost the first two at home before going on to take two of three at Fenway. So maybe the fat lady ain't sung yet. I think we have Thor on the mound yet.

Having both the Dark Knight and DeGrom go down, however... never thought THAT could happen.

Sometimes being a sports fan is so exhilerating. Other times, it feels like getting kicked repeatedly in the balls.

As for last week's football... the Jets went down to the hated Patriots, while the Giants defeated the despised Cowboys. Some highs, some lows. However, really, neither one of those games was all one way or the other. Gang Green's loss was strangely encouraging. The D looked very good, Fitz played well, and the Jets hung in there. This could very well be a playoff team. The Giants are another story. They won, yeah, but it was hardly a convincing win. No pass rush at ALL, and their run defense got absolutely shredded. They may lead the NFC East for the moment, but they are not going anywhere unless they can get healthy and shore up that defense. JPP had better come back soon and start getting sacks...

I'm just trying to savor the Mets achievements so far. We'll do what we can at home, but it's been a great and exciting season.

Get it.

Imagine being a Seahawks fan. Two trips to the Superbowl in two years--one win and one 'should have won'. Now we have to sit and watch in horror as they get to the 4th quarter and self-destruct every week. *sigh*

So very painful
I shall commiserate with you! Those fourth quarter crumbles have been KILLING me. I never want any other Washington teams to "Coug It" ever again.

I want to think we're getting our act together now, but it sure has been a painful year.

Imagine following the Mariners! Imagine being a Mariner fan who went to games when they lost 98 in a year in the Kingdome, the worst baseball facility possibly ever that you have to pretend Isn't So Bad but hopping christ on a pogo stick you know it is. And, and, and World Series what even IS that because WE DON'T KNOW.

Seahawks fans don't even know the definition of pain.

Thank the gods for the Sounders, that's all I can say.

I'm guessing many Seahawks fans do understand because they are also Mariners fans

I'll be really interested to see how effective T̶h̶e̶o̶n̶ JPP will be with his obvious physical limitation. I for one think it could work. He's coming off a double-digit sack season...how important could those fingers really be?
Oct. 29th, 2015 07:27 pm (UTC)
Depends on what kind of shape he's in.

Oct. 29th, 2015 08:08 pm (UTC)
I just Googled around and saw that Coughlin said JPP looked in "excellent" condition at today's practice. It sounds like he could be back sooner rather than later, for the New England game or even earlier.

I'm not much of a sports fan, but even so, we have a conflict of interests. I'm Kansas City born and raised and its been 30 years since we've won a World Series. It's thus hard not to get at least a little caught up in the excitement of my family and friends, just as it will be hard to avoid the mass disappointment if the Mets turn things around.

It's a zero sum game, alas. And thus, for the time being, we must be enemies. Nothing personal.

It's not over 'til it's over
The Yankees were down 0-2 to the World Champion Braves in 1996 too and they came back. The Mets have an amazing rotation, so they're certainly not out of it. It'll be interesting to see how Syndergaard approaches the Royals lineup. Game 3 would seem to be a mismatch in terms of the starting pitchers, and Young might not be as effective after pitching in relief in Game 1.

Help Coming
When Romo and Dez return everything will change. :) As long as the 'despised' Cowboys can get their personal conduct issues in line.

I feel your pain George. Im a Mets Jets Knicks fan. Cant say I have enjoyed any championships in my life, however I was born in '86'
One day, but I haven't lost hope yet. Thats the difference between us and them (most sports fans), is Met loyalty. I lived in the Bronx and I eat shit from Yankee fans, who were Bullls fans then heat fans now Cavs fans, and ex Cowboy fans who all around hate the Pats.
At least I know my colors.

Sympathy from a Raven Fan
As a Ravens fan, I want to extend sympathy for the last damn offensive play of the game that gets your hopes up but then dashes them. Whether it's Joe Flacco throwing *another* game-losing interception into the endzone or Brandon Marshall's illegal formation... it's all sympathy here.

Are you beginning to accept Triarch Belicho is getting another ring this year? How does that feel?

Oh c'mon, bro
I'll give you the negative "Spygate" image, but the Patriots aren't "EVIL". Anyway, you've gotten two victories in a row at the King's Tourney d'mean Superbowl. Can't you lay off my Pats for even a moment?

Re: Oh c'mon, bro
In all fairness, they spent the better half of their existence as a sub-500 team (especially that nasty stretch between the 86' and 96' Superbowls). Every team has it's highs and lows. The Jets DO look like they may be on the upswing if they can keep this momentum up. Fitzpatrick can hold the fort for a while but they need a long term answer at QB still.

Re: Oh c'mon, bro
I have hopes for the kid they drafted this year, but we'll see.

The Jets have been cursed at QB since Joe Willie.

Chad Pennington was the best we've had since then... he was a good one, and could have been a GREAT one, if only he could have stayed healthy. Even with his injuries, he retired with the highest completion percentage in NFL history.

Re: Oh c'mon, bro
The Jets will still take the AFC wildcard. Of course, if Brady is retroactively suspended with a successful appeal by the NFL, the Jets could still win the AFC East.

What do you think of the Jets' QB situation? I think that the era (or error) of Geno Smith has come and gone. Fitz is fine for the time being, but I wonder if he would be a long-term solution.

There are a few QB's coming out of college that might surprise a few people. Washington State's Luke Falk is playing under the national radar. He is second in the NCAA in passing yards per game (slightly behind Matt Johnson from Bowling Green). Falk plays in a power conference (Pac 12) and looks like a real NFL caliber quarterback.

If the Jets can pick up Falk with a late first round draft pick, he could be an amazing steal. He almost looks...Brady like.

Of course, I will be pulling for Stanford this weekend!

Re: Oh c'mon, bro
We just drafted a young qb last year. Need to see how he pans out before drafting another, I think.

Triarch Belicho getting another ring...
For each Patriots ring, GRRM kills off another fan favorite, AND adds a year between books. :)

If you're a fan, get Brady to retire, and take Evil Bill with him.

Every week it seems like Brandon Marshall does a couple of mind blowing things on the field, good and bad. Last week it was the drop and jogging lightly back to the huddle. Being the creative genius you are, any ideas on what wacky thing Marshall will do this week?

Fear Not
Pitching depth is the Mets strong suit! Thor is arguably the best guy on the squad in my opinion - plenty of good things to come from him and Matz (who match up very favorable v Yordano and C. Young). The losses were indeed heartbreaking but I fully anticipate the NYM bringing this to (at very least) a game 6.

Life after Rex
Well considering what Brady and CO just did to the dolphins you should be encouraged by the effort if not the outcome....Our least dominant game of the season.

Have you put Rex in the rearview yet? I think its safe to say you have a better long term coach on the sidelines these days. He seems like a quality strategist and he keeps the BS out of the media..As a result you have a focused product for the first time in years.

Fitz is still the QB though...A middle-class man's Alex Smith con beard...This weekend's game will be telling, flying cross country to take on a much better Oakland team....

Royals Fan !!
I love you GRRM, but the poor Royals in a small market with way less salary than the big guys. It just always feels like the last chance. LOL !! Not counting chickens just yet, we all know how that works.

I feel your pain
I'm really anxious about tonight's game. Watching game 2 felt like getting my heart torn out. For me, as tense as game 1 was, I was happy it was a close one.

Re: I feel your pain
Me too.

Thor should pitch well, I think. The key question is, will the Mets bats come alive?

Re: I feel your pain
That is indeed the question. I hope their bats work some magic tonight. We need it.

Sorry George =(
Hi George, as a Cub fan, I can totally relate to this feeling. Now that the initial hurt and disappointment has worn off though, I've been able to appreciate how great this season was. Our guys played hard but your Mets played harder.

Also, I just recently found out that you lived near me. (I'm from Davenport, IA and I heard you stayed in Dubuque, IA?) Don't be afraid to come back to the midwest someday soon. You may freeze though!

Best wishes!

If you think being a Mets/Jets fan is hard, try being College Football fan and your team is South Carolina Gamecocks. It's a hard life down here especially when the Devils team is # 1

A series of losses
I'm a Dodgers fan first and foremost, and then my third favorite team is the Blue Jays.....needless to say, this whole post season was absolutely, mind numbing-ly, frustrating. I don't see how we have one of the biggest salary caps on the Dodgers, but yet blow post season series like we do.

Also I was pulling for the Mets.... sorry for the loss :/
