Hey, the Jets won! Life is magical and full of joy!

Okay, okay, it was not the SuperBowl or anything, just a regular season game. But it was against the New England Patriots, the Horror Out of Boston, the Blue-and-White Walkers from Beyond the Wall, led by Evil Little Bill himself. The Jets always lose to the Patriots, usually in an especially painful fashion. Like they did earlier this season, in Foxboro. But this time they WON!

Okay, okay, they are not in the playoffs yet. New England still wins the division (They always win the division, it is so bloody BORING). Gang Green does not even a wild card slot... though now at least they control their own destiny. If they can defeat Rex and his Buffalo Bills next week, they'll be in the dance.

I will worry about that next week, however. Tonight I savor. (Yes, I know, the Giants play later. AGainst the Vikings. Don't remind me. I am savoring).

As for this morning's game... kudos to Fitz, who played a terrific game aside from that fumble. Kudos to Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker, our terrific one-two punch. Kudos to the running backs, especially Bilal Powell, who played his best game as a Jets. Kudos to the D, who kept Tom Brady on his heels for much of the game. Kudos to our coaching staff... and, especially, kudos to our terrific new GM, who assembled all these pieces.

All these kudos aside, though, Gang Green did almost lose this one. After dominating for most of the first three quarters, they let the Pats get back into it and tie in up in the fourth. A Fitz fumble run back for a TD started the bad stuff, but three bad offensive series in the last quarter compounded the difficulties. No first downs, no time run off the clock... you can't give Brady that kind of opening. So of course he made not one but TWO crucial fourth down conversions, and of course he threw the tying TD with two minutes left. I could feel the victory slipping away as we went to overtime, and the stake was poised above my heart... they tossed the coin, and the Pats won, and the darkness was closing in around me as it has so many times before...

Only then the Pats chose to kick off. Instead of receiving, and putting the hands of Tom Brady, the most dangerous mutha in football, Evil Little Bill decided that Fitz and the Jets should have it. Hee hee. Hoo ha. Oh, sweet. Thanks, Bill. What a lovely Christmas present.

Fitz took the ball and drove Gang Green right down the field for the winning TD.

And that was all she wrote.

Bills Week 17
Awesome win!

For the Buffalo matchup, I've got faith...but you know Rex Ryan will be foaming at the mouth for the chance to deprive the team who fired him a playoff spot. Even with all the problems the Bills are having, it'll be a challenge for the Jets - but I think they can/should win.

Jets
While I am a Giants fan, my brother is a Patriots fan so my dad took us to the game. And wow, it was incredible! The atmosphere was insane, and everyone just went wild when Decker won it in OT!

Strange Week
Steelers lose to a decimated Ravens team, Carolina goes down, the Packers are en route to a crushing defeat at the hands of my Cards, The Rams are leading the Seahawks...

Congrats to your Jets, hopefully the can capitalize with a playoff run. I've liked watching them play this season (especially when they beat the Patriots). It's just a shame the Giants couldn't knock the Washington [Redacted] out of the playoffs, because I just don't like them.

While I have to hand it to the Jets for the amazing pressure on Brady, I'd like to call you out on claiming that Bill gave the order to choose to kick. It was clearly a mistake ("Hey, we get to choose!"). It WAS indeed an excellent Christmas present, but definitely unintentional.

Nope, you're wrong. The player and Evil Little Bill both confirmed that it was his call at their postgame press conferences.

Correct however...
They wanted to kick, however they wanted to choose direction not kick/receive. They presumed the Jets would elect to receive so their captain said, "We want to kick that way." However, you can only choose kick/receive OR what direction you want to go. The team that loses the toss chooses makes the decision the winner didn't. The rules also state that the first choice you make from the available options is what you get. So when he said, "We want to kick..." that was a decision. The "... that way." is thrown out. This gave the Jets the ball and the choice of direction (wind at their back).

So, yes, Evil Little Bill did want to kick, but he wanted to kick the other way. The expectation was his defense would stop them and they would not get the FG. Then the Pats would only need a FG to win, with the wind at their back. But a touchdown ended that plan anyway.

So the Pats botched it in multiple ways... have you done something to please the football gods recently?

George, you should know Patriarch Belicho of Volantis now. We planned to reach OT following news of the Ravens-Steelers game, and when we got the defeat lost that we wanted, we lost to you on purpose to erase Pittsburgh of the Playoffs maps.

So it was all Part Of The Pan

See you in divisional round in Foxborough!

RE: Pats fan from Spain
Let me get this right. The patriots were afraid of the Steelers who lost to former thirdstring ex pats qb, but want the jets in the playoffs who have beaten the pats arguablly 7 out of 9 quarters (including ot) this year. Got it.

My beloved Falcons stopped Cam, Josh Norman, and the rest of the Teal Cats from achieving the perfect season. I'm sure they would have eventually lost in the post season, but I'll be damned if it wasn't sweet for us to be the team that crushed their dreams, especially after two weeks ago. Julio schooled Norman all game, too. Pretty good day in the NFL. It'll get better if your Giants beat the Vikings.

Good?
I have a hard time thinking of the jets as good after they hired the dog torturer, Vick....

Re: Good?
The Eagles were the first people to take back Vick, so we may have a bit of a bias, but people over see generally see Vick as repented for what he did. He lost all of his money and fame and gave large portions of his money to animal rights organizations. Since his conviction he's also donated to other charitable endeavors and started some such as the Michael Vick Foundation. He's made up for the bad stuff he's done.

Some are suggesting the Patriots didn't really want to win, because they match up (when healthier) better against the Jets than the Steelers. It's pretty difficult to come up with an explanation why at the end of the first half, with two minutes on the clock and two time outs and down by 7, the Patriots made no effort whatsoever to score. That's what Brady does best and you would normally feel lucky if they only put up 3 in that situation. Then electing to kick in OT...

Again, pats are afraid of steelers team that lost to former third string pats qb but not a jets team that has arguably beaten them 7/9 quarters this year. Got it.

"Evil Little Bill"
"But it was against the New England Patriots, the Horror Out of Boston, the Blue-and-White Walkers from Beyond the Wall, led by Evil Little Bill himself."

If the "Night's King" from the TV Show is based off of a White Walker/Other leader from the novels, and if that character is based on Bill Belichick... Heeheehee. Oh, what fun that would be.

When I saw the result, I said (though an inveterate Packer fan)--couldn't have happened to a nicer team.

I was mostly thinking about you and all I know of the Jets from your posts. I have no other connection.

I also meant it snarkily--the loss couldn't have happened to a "nicer" team. Ha.

Belicho
Gotta ask you George, why is it that you can't stand Belichick that much? Like, I also can't stand the Patriots and I cheered for the Jets, and I'm not fond of Bill, but hey, as a Giants fan I have to say, this guy was part of the Giants coaching staff about 12 years and played a huge part in the 1990 Super Bowl win.

That being said, I know that he's not really likeable and everything, but somehow you have to respect him, no matter what. I wasn't born yet in 1990 but I'm still glad for his part. Didn't he also cry when they demolished the old Giants stadium?

Can you really be excited about beating a team that lacked its top 2 wideouts, top two running backs, both starting tackles AND both starting safeties?

I guess a wins a win, but what does it really say about the Jets? Despite everything, they had to go to overtime and rely on a stupid coinflip call to win.

Congrats to the Jets, its a shame they will be one-and-done come playoff time.

Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee
Hi George. I just wanted to share with you that I am watching Jerry Seinfeld's, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee, and his guest is non other than Pres Barack Obama! I thought of YOU the moment the Pres responded to Jerry's question, "what sport is Politics, Liars Poker, Chess..?" with, "Football" and then went on to explain why. :) I thought you'd appreciate that. Happy New Year to you and the Lady Parris. Me
