Well, Damn

Sometimes I hate Live Journal.

I've been working all day on a new post, a long long long look back on the year that is ending, and all the things that happened in it, the good and the bad.

I know, I know. I should have broken it up. Made it three posts, or four.

But I didn't, and somehow I lost it.

No problem, I figured. LJ has a "restore previous draft" function.

Sadly, however, when I use it, I get a short two paragraph post that I started last night and then abandoned, after deciding I didn't want to post about that after all.

Today's post, the long long long long one (and it wasn't finished), seems to have vanished into the ether, and I can't get it back.

Nor do I have the energy (or time) to recreate it.

Hell of a way to end the year.

Sorry.

Re: Lost chapters
Never. And you know why? Because I write my fiction with WordStar 4.0 on a DOS machine. Stable as a rock, with none of the glitches of Windows-based systems.

Re: Lost chapters
I often wonder what your system looks like you write your hugely popular various book series on. The old WordStar system. I find this concept hugely amusing in a very positive way, shunning the glitch/crap fest that is Windows based writing programs.

Hell, another of my favorite authors, the now departed Shelby Foote, who wrote great volumes on the American Civil War, wrote every single thing he every wrote, by hand, on fine paper, with a fine pen. That I absolutely cannot wrap my brain around, considering how huge just his CW book series is.

The ultimate shunning of tech - pen/paper.

George, I assume your WordStar PC is isolated from the internet as well - added security measure? You must have had cyber sleuths try and get early access to material before.

Re: Lost chapters
Please tell us you have multiple backups and multiple locations! I'm going to have Cersei-esque nightmares about the 20 year old hard drive on the DOS machine.

Re: Lost chapters
Out of interest, how much functionality does the system have? I really don't know how word processors worked all that time ago. Can you copy and paste, move around text, search for words, automatically spell check, etc?

Re: Lost chapters
It does everything I want it to do.

More modern systems have too much "functionality" for me. They get in my way, and there are so many bells and whistles I can figure out how to do the things I want them to do, and make them stop doing the ones I don't.

For instance, I don't WANT spellcheck. Spellcheck has fits over words like Targaryen, maegi, anything in Dothraki or High Valyrian, etc etc

Re: Lost chapters
I love that if you type wordstar 4.0 dos into Google out of curiosity, you get a bunch of images of block text peppered delightfully with pictures of GRRM. The face of wordstar 4.0!

Re: Lost chapters
I think you are joking, but I really do have a crushing fear of losing drafts, so i have little notebooks everywhere. Things go to paper before they go to processor, and every few hours i let my google drive synch my folder of craziness. So if you were serious, I feel the anxiety, and if joking, there are going to be folks out there asking for copies of WordStar 4.0 asap :)

Re: Lost chapters
Which begs the question: what are you going to do when your beloved DOS finally keels over?

Re: Lost chapters
Retire?

I don't believe there's any chance of that happening soon. My hardware may die, but that can be replaced. The software should work forever. Or at least last longer than I will.

Mr Martin, we all hope that you backup the data from the dos machine. Anything can happen on a 20years+ machine.

Re: Lost chapters
Hi, I joined just to reply to this entry. The software you use is great but I have to ask about the hardware. I have been working on a DOS 6.22 system kept for the same reason for a client of mine and it began to randomly delete data from the hard drive. Turned out the IDE chipset had bad capacitor and sent random write and delete instructions.

So, I am hoping your DOS / Wordstar setup runs on a virtual image so you can have the best of reliable software and reliable hardware.

Happy New Year!

I heard this but didn't know it was true. That is spectacular. Seems poetic but it's probably just practical.
