Playoff Football

The NFL playoffs are in full swing, and of course as a football fan, I watch them.

However, I have to confess, since neither the Jets nor the Giants are involved, I don't watch them with the same level of attention that I do when one of my teams is playing. I often work while watching... going over a copyedited manuscript, paying bills, balancing my checkbook, whatever. When something exciting happens, I can always rewind to watch what I missed. The wonders of having TIVO (I do love my TIVO).

So I really don't have much to say about this weekend's contests. Except...

The Patriots won. Bummed me out. Boring game too. I expected more of the Chiefs.

The Broncos won. No surprise, but that one was closer than I expected. Given the losses the Steelers have suffered, I thought it might be a blowout, but Pittsburgh hung in there gallantly. I have a lot of respect for the Steelers. The Rooneys, like the Maras, are one of the class ownerships in the NFL. I was glad to see Peyton advance, though. Can't help but hope he ends his career with another ring. But first he needs to beat Brady and Evil Little Bill.

The Carolina / Seattle game was strange. Almost a repeat of the Giants game against Carolina during the regular season, minus the Beckham/ Norman war. Complete domination by Carolina in the first half, during which they built up a 31 - 0 lead. In the second half, they don't show up. Almost blew that one, just as they almost blew the Giants game. Someone needs to tell the Panthers that NFL games last 60 minutes, not 30.

As for the Green Bay/ Arizona game... words fail me. That game was insane. Especially the ending. Discount Doublecheck indeed... Aaron Rodgers made what were essentially TWO Hail Marys to move from his own endzone to a TD. I have never seen anything like it. Impossible, really. And then came the overtime coin toss, and the bloody coin doesn't flip. Plainly eldritch forces were at work. The end, with Larry the Fitz taking it over, was amazing and exciting and, I think, satisfying for any football fan not from Wisconsin. But hey, a great game, if a crazy one. I am glad neither of my teams was involved. Those last ten minutes would have killed me.

You write about Foot ball with such a passion :D
I don't know anything about Football, but reading your blog always makes me curious (since in general, I like watchings sports events like soccer, skiing ..) :D Maybe I'll have a look into it, just wouldn't know where or how to start (since I don't even know the rules)... Any suggestions?

Jump on a random team and ride their bandwagon for a bit. That helped me get into football.

B vs P
Hopefully my Broncos can pull it out against the Patriots. It will be a tough game for sure.

NFL playoffs.
That Green Bay/Arizona game was insane! Even though i'm from Illinois I'm a huge fan of the Cards...I'm hoping Fitzgerald can get a ring. Class act...Fingers crossed.

Steelers
I was hoping that the Steelers made it through as I'd expect them (with injuries resolved) to put up a fight against the Brady bunch . Peyton is more of a hand-off expert now and I think evil Bill will come up with a scheme to restrict him to 3 pointers, so basically it will be Brady/gronk/edelman Vs the Broncos Defense.

Football is a game about foot and ball, not about hands and run. Cheers!

Your tip for the SB and the eventual champ, GRRM?

I'd like to see the Cards vs Broncos. Love Arians style and I too hope for another ring for Peyton as a final bow.

However the head says Carolina vs Pats.
With the Panthers folding in the big dance :(

Re the Green Bay/Arizona game, you didn't even mention the other wacky play: the endzone-carom-off-another-player-into-a-Cardinal TD.

All the teams I had been rooting for lost up until last nights Arizona game since last week! Now all the teams I wanted to win have done so. Glad the tide turned. I'm going to the Panther game next Sunday here in Charlotte...can't wait!

Drive For Five Still Alive!
I for one was ecstatic to see my Patriots advance to the AFC Championship again. I know us Pats fans can come off as arrogant, which there is no doubt we are, but we are just enjoying the good times while they last. I know that we have had more than our share, but this team has earned it; not the fans, the TEAM. They work their butts off, they have the best coach in the league, and their owner like the Maras and Rooneys is a true class act.

I understand you hate the Pats, but you have to grudgingly admit that they are phenomenal. And if nothing else, you got to watch your Giants(previously my second favorite team) beat them TWICE in the Superbowl! What more could you reasonably ask for?

Re: Drive For Five Still Alive!
Brady is phenomenal. It remains to be seen how good the Pats and Evil Little Bill would be without him. Maybe eventually he will retire, and we will all find out.

They work their butts off? Sure. So does every other team in the NFL.

Great, but odd, football weekend. Can't wait to see the Patriots get a chance at back to back Super Bowls by going through Manning yet again. A fitting match up for the two greatest QBs of this era.

NFL Playoffs
As a fan of the Philadelphia Eagles I feel ya. It does not look like the Eagles will be good any time soon with our disaster of a front office right now. Howie Roseman must GO.

The Rooney's and Mara's are in-laws I believe. Actresses Kate Mara and Rooney Mara are part of both families. Sounds a little ASOIAF-esque.

Panthers Pattern
Carolina has played far better in the first half on multiple occasions this season (GB, Giants, Indy, etc).
The bad news for Cats fans is that it doesn't appear like a habit that can suddenly be broken before next week (albeit, some players give 100% all game).
The good news is that Panthers appear to have the most potential and the best chance to beat the Pats.
