Odds and Ends

Got back from MystiCon on Monday. It was a fun weekend, and did much to restore my spirits. After all the internet rancor that has dominated on-line discussion of late, it was good to be reminded of what cons are all about... and how warm, welcoming, and open fandom can be. The Roanoke crowd seemed like good folks. And it was great to see how many young people and first-timers were at the con (I asked for a show of hands on several occasions). All the alarums about the demise of traditional SF fandom may be somewhat premature, I'm thinking.

Back home, of course, I had the usual thousand new emails waiting in my inbox. But among them, at long long last, was my Hugo PIN from MidAmericon II. I can finally begin nominating for this year's awards. I urge all of you to do the same. (And will have a few more Hugo thoughts and recommendations in subsequent posts).

We had a great event at the JCC with Tony DiTerlizzi of THE SPIDERWICK CHRONICLES. And one last week, before I left, with Joe Lansdale and HAP & LEONARD. Plenty of signed books from Tony and Joe both are now available in the Cocteau bookstore. If you're an autograph hunter, strike now while the supply lasts.

We have more fun events coming up in the next few months as well. Magician Francis Menotti will be making a return appearance, with the trick that fooled Penn & Teller, and we have booksignings scheduled with Darynda Jones, Joe Hill, and Stephen Graham Jones. And a little further out, Neil Gaiman will be appearing with some gigantic Tasmanian cave spiders. Go to the JCC website and sign up for our email newsletter if you'd like more details on forthcoming events at the theatre.

Meow Wolf's opening comes closer every day. The gang down at Silva Lanes is working overtime right now, getting a little frantic as they labor to make sure everything is ready for opening weekend.

Oh, and GAME OF THRONES season six is drawing nigh as well. You may have heard. Before the season six debut on April 24, the JCC will be running a season five marathon. Weekly screenings, two hours per week, of the S5 episodes on our big medium-sized screen. And admission is FREE. First come, first seated.

I am sure there's more. Life is busy. Hope yours is too.

Time Life Books salesman
I liked your story about how one of your first jobs was selling time life books over the phone. Pretty Funny.

I'm glad you enjoyed your weekend, George. It's good to get away from all the work sometimes. I hope you're as excited for GoT's season 6 as I am!

Periscope - Tony DiTerlizzi
I just wanted to say thanks to you and the wonderful staff at the Cocteau for live streaming the Tony DiTerlizzi event via Periscope. I watched the event with my wife and we both enjoyed it. We especially enjoyed the excellent questions from the young readers in the audience. I hope you will consider live streaming future events for those of us who are not fortunate enough to join you live and in person in Santa Fe.

It was great getting to meet you last weekend, and glad you had such a great time here! A lot of great stories, probably a favorite was your feelings towards Quidditch.

Re: Next book
I'm obviously not George, but based off of his end of the year post at the start of January, that's the hope!

Re: Next book
GRRM addressed this question in a previous post, but short answer is probably not going to see the Winds of Winter this year. When will be done? When it is done. When is that going to be? As soon as possible. Basically, it takes a considerable amount of time to craft a book that could be 1000+ pages long. Be patient and check out "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" or "The Ice Dragon" if you need some Westerosi stories to hold you over.

Dark Tower Casting Opinions
As a fan of the Dark Tower series I was wondering what your thoughts are on the recent castings of Idris Elba as the Gunslinger and Matthew Mcconaughey as the Man In Black? Should be very interesting!

Season 6?
I don't think I'll be watching GoT this season (sorry, HBO). I know the show diverges from the book series more and more each year. However, at this point, there are some things that could potentially be revealed that I would much rather read from the words of Mr. Martin himself. HBOgo stores the show's full archive, and there it must wait for me. #WorthTheWait

Glad the Con was uplifting for you, and there was a good turnout.

I was wondering when you'd make a post about the con. Good to see it raised your spirits. And from reading previous posts from your minions, it sounds like the JCC has and will continue to be busy in the upcoming weeks.

And my life could stand to be a deal busier, but I'll try to rectify that as best I can.
Mar. 4th, 2016 12:32 am (UTC)
You're really tempting me to hop into a car, abandon my work for a few days and drive the several thousand miles to the JCC and see Season 5 there simply for the experience. I say that and will be honest that I'm not a fan of some of the things done in Season 5, but the experience would more than make up for whatever I might not like about Season 5 itself. If I perhaps lived the next state over, I'd actually do it.

Unfortunately I live in PA and real life gets in the way. Still, good luck and I hope you and everyone else who attends have fun and enjoy one another's company. :)

spirits and all the jazz
Hi George, nice to read you in such an upbeat tone. It's uplifting. Hey, I wanted to ask you if you read Matthew Mather's Atopia series and what you thought of it?

Hey George, speaking of THRONES.. Have you any idea when a trailer would be coming?

The Armageddon Rag
Dear George,

Many months ago I asked you about your musical tastes and you responded by letting me know that much and more could be discovered on that topic if I dipped into your 1983 work "The Armageddon Rag".

After almost a year of trying to find a hardcover copy of the book at ANY bookstore, I finally just ordered it online and recently finished it.

I loved the book. as an artist and musician myself I can say it spoke very directly to me about the thread of time and art and the way our mindsets can define who we are and destroy us if we don't try to understand and marry them with reality. I would love to rant and write all day about it but it turns out the Armageddon Rag doesn't have quite as significant an online following as A Song Of Ice And Fire (who would have thought)(also I'm working on building that up for you).

I have one question, and I'm pretty sure I know the answer but here it is: What if he took the shot? (I don't want to use names to spoil anything)

It was a fantastic and meaningful book, one I will definitely reread and pass around to all my culture loving friends, and one that actually might reignite their love for reading.

Take care, Good luck with everything, and thanks for being there.

Thank you so much for a memorable time at Mysticon. It was our first con and my wife and I had such a great time we have already signed up to see you again at Balticon.

Really enjoyed your stories and of course the reading. We eagerly await book #6, but no rush; let the garden grow at it's own pace :)

In short, "we love you, man!"

Slightly off topic but it DOES kinda relate to the show/books - I honestly see that somehow the Repulican Convention could shape up to mirror the Night's Watch Lord Commander Election in A Storm of Swords, with Trump as Janos Slynt, Cruz as Cotter Pyke and Rubio as Denys Malleister. Will Kasich be the John Snow or will it literally be someone unknown out of nowhere?

A question
Seven blessings to you George.
Do you have any plans for releasing a chapter or two before the Season 6 airs?
Mar. 4th, 2016 04:12 pm (UTC)
Preview chapters?
Do you have any plans to release another TWOW preview chapter before season 6, like you did before the last two seasons?

(Regardless, I really appreciate that you take the time to update us on your life and work on your blog. Thanks for all you do!)

Good to hear the Con was a great time. I always find that people are usually much nicer in person than online. Are you attending any Cons coming up in the Northeast? I need to get back into the Con game it's been so long...

Any chance of you playing the season 6 premiere at the Jean Cocteau like previous seasons? . . .I'm assuming no since this season is much more secretive than past seasons with HBO not even releasing press copies of the first few episodes like they have in the past.
Mar. 6th, 2016 09:28 pm (UTC)
Alas, no. We are doing a season 5 marathon, but not season 6 premiere.

On behalf of everyone here at MystiCon in Roanoke, Virginia, Carla Brindle and I would like to thank you, Mr. Martin, for taking time out of your busy schedule to attend our 2016 convention. We are happy to hear you enjoyed yourself and that we may have contributed, in some small way, to restoring your faith in SF Fandom. We are grateful to you for all the panels and signings you did at MystiCon for your fans, as well as your generous donation to the MystiCon 2016 scholarship auction.

Again, thank you for being MystiCon 2016's Convention Guest of Honor and know that you are always welcome in our little corner of Westeros.

I had a great time at the con, and I'm looking forward to Balticon. At dinner, I asked you about sending my friend's custom Westeros map to you, and you told me to email so that I could get the address; I sent an email to grrmbooks@gmail.com; if that is no longer the email I should use to contact your office administrator, please let me know the correct email address.

Anthology of 120 Campbell-eligible authors
Hi George,

Since you're a huge proponent of the Hugos and the not-a-Hugo Campbell, I thought you'd like to know that we've just finished putting together an anthology of as many 2016 Campbell-eligible writers as we could get. The book is downloadable for free here: http://www.badmenagerie.com/up-and-coming-stories-from-the-2016-campbell-eligible-writers/

It includes:

* 120 authors
* 230 works of fiction
* over 1.1 million words
* at least 3 Nebula-nominated pieces
* stories from dozens of magazines, from F&SF, Analog, and Asimov's to Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, and Tor.com, plus novel excerpts from books with Simon & Schuster, Angry Robot, HarperVoyager, and more.

It will be available for free for all of March, and it's meant both to aid with Campbell nominations and to celebrate and showcase this year's qualifying writers. If you're so inclined to drop a note about it to your readers when discussing the Campbell, we'd be over the moon.

Thanks for your time!

Reading your comment about the screen size of the JCC, set my mind to wondering about the projector technology of the theater. Has JCC updated to digital or does it still use carbon arc projectors? I grew up around theaters and still have that romantic fascination with the older technology.

Hot pie

Will we ever see Hot Pie again? His complete innocence and stupidity was a breath of fresh air in the Arya chapters when everything else was going pretty shitty.

speaking of odds and ends...
An odd question (which I hope does not start an ugly conversation) : but do you ever think about modern events from the lens of your characters?

Sometimes I like to imagine things like if Littlefinger ran the US, what would he be trying to do in Syria. Or what instead would Dany do? That's a basic example, but essentially fitting those dynamic perspectives into news headlines.

It's kind of comforting to imagine that Trump is a Littlefinger/Varys style plot to hurt a political party instead of... what it looks like.

Just a quick question
Before the show, did you have melodies in mind for 'The Rains of Castamere' and 'The Bear and the Maiden Fair', or just the lyrics?
Mar. 7th, 2016 05:57 pm (UTC)
Re: Just a quick question
Just lyrics. I am a word guy, not a melody guy.
