The Replacements

MidAmericon II has finally announced the replacements for the two Hugo nominees who withdrew from the ballot as originally announced.

Replacing BLACK GATE in Best Fanzine is LADY BUSINESS, which can be found here http://ladybusiness.dreamwidth.org/

Replacing "The Commuter" by Thomas Mays in Short Story is "Cat Pictures Please" by Naomi Kritzer, which was originally published in CLARKESWORLD http://clarkesworldmagazine.com/kritzer_01_15/

I am not familiar with either of the new nominees... but since they were not part of any slate, I think both of them are likely to be strong contenders. I look forward to checking them out.

(As I said in a previous post, sixth place has never been so important).

((Though I am curious as to whether these two new finalists were indeed sixth. It seemed to take MAC a rather long time to announce the replacements after the withdrawal, something that could presumably be accomplished in minutes just by looking at the list and seeing who was next up -- unless, perhaps, there were other withdrawals along the way? We'll find out come August)).

Short Story and Fanzine were two categories where the Rabid Puppies had swept the field, top to bottom. Accordingly, they were also two categories that I had earmarked as being in need of Alfies. But the withdrawals and replacements broke the Rabid stranglehold, leaving me with a decision to make -- do I still present Alfies in those categories, or no?

I am going to need to ponder that for a while.

The Replacements
"Cat Pictures Please" by Naomi Kritzer was chosen for two Best of Year anthologies—those of Rich Horton and Neil Clarke. It is also on the Locus Recommended Reading List, and the Nebula and Locus final ballots. That's enough evidence for me that it's a legitimate, mainstream contender.

I saw those nominations and I also nominated it on my own. It's a very interesting story.

Personally, I think using the Alfies to honor works in any category where something got screwed out of a spot on the ballot by vindictive jerks is appropriate. If there's a Rabid nominee in a category, award an Alfie.

"It's an honor to not even be nominated."

Definitely keep Alfies for them. The more Alfies you present, the longer the party will be, thus the more fun to be had. Right?

Nah, the party will go to the wee hours regardless of the number of Alfies.

I don't doubt that "Cat Pictures Please" was in sixth. As was mentioned previously, its all over everyone's list. I nominated it myself.

Lady Business does seem a bit odd, but its not a category I follow all that closely.

I think the delay is because I assume they check with the nominee to ensure they are Okay with being put on the ballot.

Lady Business isn't odd; it would have made the ballot last year if not for the slates. I'm one who nominated them, both last year and this year -- they're good people and do good SFF criticism.

(Just checked the Sasquan numbers and LB was second on the long list, above File 770.)

contagious canines
Sad to see that the Hugo besmirching is still going on. If this continues for much longer it will seriously damage the award, just as it seems to be the intention of VD and his wild bunch...

I mean who would call themselves rabid puppies? It's defining you as bloodthirsty, aggressive, dangerous, no longer master of their own reactions and both contagious and ultimately even lethal.
And while humans have a slim chance of being cured, a rabid dog regardless of age is always doomed to spread the disease and die.

If that is their idea of irony no wonder the only joy in an event like the Hugos is to see it burn and crash and others be disturbed by what is happening.

The Hugos deserve better and if they're right and GRRM does qualify as "one of these SJWs" then SJWs must be admirable members of the community and i can't see why they would be a target of hate and vitriol. Seeing one's life's work and something so dear to your heart being vandalized, shattered and destroyed so openly due to jealousy and hurt feelings as one of the many millions of authors that will never win any awards must be horrifying.

Re: contagious canines
I don't consider myself an "SJW." I know there are some people out there who are glad to apply that term to themselves, but that number does not include anyone I know... though I know many people who are very political and concerned about discrimination, equality, equal opportunity, and similar issues.

The Hugos do deserve better.

The Replacements
I suspect that the reason they held off on announcing them was to see if there were going to be a lot more withdrawals. If that had happened, and they were announcing the replacements right away, we would've known who was 6th, 7th, etc.

Perhaps the delay in the announcement of r3eplacements was due to the need to contact the nominees and get their approval.

The Puppies are going to hate Naomi Kritzer's story, for reasons similar to their hate for "If You Were a Dinosaur, My Love," even though that one had an entirely different emotional tone. They both have the kind of off-beat view of life that drives Puppies mad. I hope it wins. It's a delightful little piece, and I've been a fan of her work for a long time.

Cat Pictures Please
I'm pleased to see that this one showed up, since it was one of the ones I nominated. It showed up on Rocket Stack Rank's website and I read it and enjoyed it.

I hope most will give those on VD's slate that were put on without their knowledge, a fair shake. I followed this all last year, so I know you (GRRM) will, but I hope the general consensus is as well, rather than throwing everyone under VD's bus.

For instance, I have followed Shamus Young's blog (of DM of the Rings fame and nominated for Best Fan Writer) for years and years and he is the furthest thing from VD's crowd. He is has always tried to stay strictly apolitical on his website, and I found his analysis of storytelling through the medium of video games very insightful. (You will find his Mass Effect series that he is nominated for... well the definition of 'fan' writer must be loose indeed.)

Mind you, I have no idea whether what he has written is Hugo worthy, as I don't know what is typically nominated here. But as long as people give it fair consideration rather than nuke it out of hand, I am happy. I guess I am preaching to the choir here, but while the nuke option might have been a right method last year (debatable), it certainly is not the right method this year.

My comment will be something of the category 'nice to know'

Mister Martin did you know, that in German (Bavarian accent only though) Shae means beautiful? Also just in pronunciation, not spelling. I think it's quite matching <3

re: replacements
The good folks at Rocket stacks did an analysis of the effects of the Vox people. http://www.rocketstackrank.com/2016/04/analysis-of-slate-voting-for-2016-hugos.html
If the numbers are correct a total of 200 or so people are being a-holes. Also I suggest to Tingle he write a story about Vox getting caught by Dragon Security attempting to sneak into the Loser Party. Anyone that anti-gay has to be repressing his own sexuality and some ripped Dragons in uniforms may cause all sorts of Tingle fun.
