A Taste of This, A Taste of That

Some of you may not realize that, in addition to my Not A Blog, I also have an actual homepage / website. You can find it here: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/ Check it out, if you have not visited before. There's lots and lots of content there, all sorts of things to explore.

I must confess, though, I don't update it as often as I should. What can I say? I'm busy.

But today we uploaded a couple of new items that some of you may be interested in: new samples from two forthcoming books.

For all the Wild Cards fans out there, we've got a taste of HIGH STAKES, due out this August. HIGH STAKES is the twenty-third volume in the overall series, and the third and concluding part of the 'Fort Freak' triad. The sample is from the pen of the talented Ian Tregillis, and features Mollie Steunenberg, aka Tesseract. You'll find it at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/wild-cards-excerpt/

((Readers with weak stomachs be warned, HIGH STAKES is our Lovecraftian horror book, and things do get graphic and bloody and... well... horrible. Althought not so much in the sample)).

And... because I know how much bitching I'd get if I offered a new sample from Wild Cards without also doing one from A SONG OF ICE & FIRE... we've also changed the WINDS OF WINTER sample on my wesbite, replacing the Alayne chapter that's been there for the past year with one featuring Arianne Martell. (Some of you may have heard me read this one at cons).

Have a read at: http://www.georgerrmartin.com/excerpt-from-the-winds-of-winter/

You want to know what the Sand Snakes, Prince Doran, Areo Hotah, Ellaria Sand, Darkstar, and the rest will be up to in WINDS OF WINTER? Quite a lot, actually. The sample will give you a taste. For the rest, you will need to wait.

And no, just to spike any bullshit rumors, changing the sample chapter does NOT mean I am done. See the icon up above? Monkey is still on my back... but he's growing, he is, and one day...

I'm going to check out all that goodness in a bit. Thank you Mr. Martin. As an advocate of quality over quantity, I would rather you take two more years and continue on being the hauntingly awesome and detailed epic that all previous books have been than to rush out stuff because the masses said so. I like your monkey on your back. He can come up to Portland and hang out while you work

I agree that he should not rush, but for most things, productivity is not an ascending line, but a curve, which begins to descend after a while.
I think if he spend two more years with this book he will start to hate it more than anything.

Enlarged Monkey
I didn't realize I should be wishing for the monkey to grow, i've been rooting for you to slay the monkey -- to murder that monkey in it's goddamn sleep. Now I wish you a giant a monkey.

Re: Enlarged Monkey
A well behaved, cooperative giant monkey. :-)

Unfortunately, the critters are all but most of the time. Good luck wrestling that monster into shape.

Thanks for the new TWOW chapter! Hopefully the monkey's gotten fairly large these past few months :)

The monkey
The monkey is a businessman, George is a writer. The monkey doesn't tell George what to write, and he doesn't tell the monkey what to do with his money.

minor typo

I think some OCR software picked up "Nym" as "Nyrn," though your guess is far better than mine.

Re: minor typo
Nern would actually not be a bad character name for someone with more of a wacky personality.

Good News!
Delighted to read new material. Even from the cold Snake girls.
I guess the chapter of Jon coming back is to much to ask for?
May. 11th, 2016 06:23 am (UTC)
HOLY SHIT! That is a monkey on your back. I'll be damned.
May. 11th, 2016 06:24 am (UTC)
I loved hearing you read this at Mysticon earlier this year, and I'm happy to have a copy of it to reread over and over, thank you for releasing it. The scene with Elia Sand in the weirwood cave is one of my favorite tidbits from all of the released TWOW chapters, and I am very excited to see more of Lady Lance!

Thanks George!

Can't help to think the timing of this post and the name dropping of certain Dornish characters correlates to the way the storyline has been handled in a certain tv show. In which case you have my utmost admiration, good Ser. :-)

I really love the "What I'm reading/watching" sections of the website. I know you end up sort of giving us updates on those accounts here at Not a Blog, but I like the way those pages are structured and I think you are an excellent reviewer.

I'm hungry for more after reading this chapter. Arianne's plot and of a certain young boy is my favourite from the start although I think that his quest for crown will end in some tragic way as many times it was in the history, like with Pseudoantoninus (emperor Heliogabal), or with pseudo Michael VII Doukas (associated with Robert Guiscard), or with supposed Jean I of France (Giannino Baglioni) or with Dimitriad and so and so.

The Halfmaester is called "Haldon" 2 times, and "Halden" 5 times. But very excited! More please.

Re: Typos!
Chains also may have been renamed "Chain" here. I had to look this up, but in the Appendix in Dance, "Chains" and "Young John Mudd" are both listed together in the Golden Company section. I believe it was also "Chains" when this was previously read aloud, so it may just be something when it was posted. Though I wonder, is it good to have fans that point out every little thing?
