Emmys, Emmys, Emmys

GAME OF THRONES kicked ass and took names last weekend in LA, at the Creative Arts Emmys, racking up nine victories, way more than any other show.

"Dominates," the Hollywood press is saying. Hey, cool, I will go with that.

http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/creative-arts-emmys-game-thrones-927671

GAME OF THRONES took home the Emmys for casting, for makeup (non-prosthetic), for makeup (prosthetic).

Also for production design, for costuming, and for sound mixing.

And for editing, for stunt coordination, and for special visual effects (that was the fifth consecutive win for our SFX guys)

I'd say "eight is enough, and nine is even better," but we also lost some... so instead I will just say congratulations to all our winners, and condolences to all our losers, and to all the other nominees as well. Hugo, Nebula, Oscar, or Emmy, it IS an honor just to be nominated.

With these nine wins, GAME OF THRONES has now taken home more Emmy Awards than any other drama in the entire history of television. That is a tribute to HBO, which truly has no rivals when it comes to production quality, and to David Benioff and Dan Weiss and the outrageously talented cast and crew they assembled to bring the Seven Kingdoms and their people to life. I have been thrilled to be a part of this.

And who knows? There are more Emmys Awards this weekend, so we may not be done making television history quite yet. Tune in on Sunday night to find out.

All well deserved. Season 6 was a huge accomplishment. With any luck, there will be more to come. Miguel Sapochnik deserves best director for the first 22 minutes of the episode "The Winds of Winter" alone. Lena, Kit, Peter, Maisie.. so many fantastic performances. I look forward to watching the wins (of winter) this upcoming weekend!

Going to the Emmys?
You had mentioned a while ago that you were undecided on whether you would be present at the Emmys. Know you're working on the Son of Kong but hope you can make it to the Emmys themselves. Think you'll be there?

Soundtrack
This season was absolutely incredible! Such a pleasure to watch and to listen to. I don't know if there is a category for soundtrack, but if not, there should be. Credit is definitely deserved there. All around really... the cast and crew all did a spectacular job. Give everyone who works on the show an damn emmy, lol! Phenomenal work!

Emmy voting
Im reading your blog so it's probably redundant to state that I'm a fan of the novels and the show...That said do you think it was a coincidence that when the voting was opened up to all 18000 Emmy voters (that can vote in up to 20 categories rather than the 4 they were allowed prior to 2015) that GOT cleaned up? I'm not saying any of the awards are undeserved, I just have a hard time believing that everyone voting has watched the requisite number of episodes of each show to make a completely informed decision.....

Obviously the awards are great for everyone involved and I'm not a Monday morning QB when it comes to this stuff saying show X deserved it over show W, but you must recognize that the sheer number of awards GOT has pocketed is a bit inflated...I'm sure someone could make some sort of twisted analogy to what has and is happening to the Hugos voting...obviously not for an ideological stand point but from an informed voter dilution POV.

.Congrats on the creative awards and I'm sure come next week there will be another dozen trophies going the cast and crews way... Probably all very deserving as well...I haven't watched all the shows so I can't really speak to that...I do know I greatly enjoy the show every night it is on and I wait with baited breath for the crisp papers of the SOK to flip through my kindle fire.

Good night and good luck xoxo

Congrats to all the nominees and winners!!
When creating the Seven Kingdoms and beyond, did you have any inkling or perhaps even a certainty, that GoT would become the worldwide phenomenon that is has?

Congratulations. The show's wins are so well deserved.

I hope you can come out with a feature film so you can win an Oscar too.

While we are at it, why not a Tony? Have you seen the music video by Forte Tenors where they sang a opera entirely in High Valyrian? If you turn on closed captioning, you can see the lyrics and translation. I would pay good silver to see Fire and Blood on Broadway or Lincoln Center.

While we are on the topic of music, Ramin Djawadi is a genius. His Targaryen soundtrack is simply a thing of beauty.

Game of Thrones surely could have won an Emmy's for the musical score. But apparently, he wasn't nominated because he didn't apply for the award. According to the article below "unlike all other categories, in which producers, public relations or awards representatives may submit on others’ behalf, it is up to the eligible composers, lyricists and musical directors to submit themselves for consideration in the music categories." If this is true, it may be worth talking to HBO about the network offering him support in order to get nominated next year.

Do you prefer the new 7-episode season or the ol' regular ones with 10 episodes? The books are huge, so I'm afraid things will seem more "rushed" now.

My preference would have been for 13-episode seasons, as with other HBO shows. As I have been saying since season one.

In regards to HBO's Game of thrones
What were your thoughts when you first heard Ramin Djawadi's "Light of the Seven" during Season 7, episode 10? I couldn't help but wonder if you had anything to do with this or if you were as surprised and impressed with the music that they put to Cersei's "Great Achievment" in episode 10? I actually purchased the song off of the soundtrack and listen to it regularly... It's amazing. Were you aware of the relationship this song had to other soundtracks, including "The Sopranos"??? Just curious. Hope you are having a wonderful day with a slightly smaller monkey on your back :)

Alas, I've had to stop watching the show until I've read Winds Of Winter, which I haven't done yet for obvious reasons.

I heard you on an interview long ago talking how you ware very picky about who to give the TV rights because you saw other authors "crying at the cinema" after seeing what Hollywood did to they're work. After the 1st season you were very happy but now that 6th season ended are you still happy?

I'm thinking of the major changes that were done from the books with some characters like Yara Greyjoy going from straight to lesbian (and god she was great at **** her men in the books haha) Also Euron looked so... 'blank' on TV, and it's wanted for him to replace Ramsay as top heel but he falls short by far. Needless to say I loved the Greyjoys in the books.
Going into season 7 I lost the hype I had for the previous seasons as I feel like the mainstream audience forced changes on the show.

Exciting!
This is indeed exciting and if Kit does not win best supporting actor for his gut wrenching emotion in episodes 9 and 10--hell, the entire season, I don't know what. Well done, George! You're a legend!

Game of thrones wedding
Hello good Sir,

I am in the middle of planning a Game of Thrones wedding and I'd first like to invite you (if you happen to be traveling through St. Louis in November of next year) and second I wanted to ask you if there is something specific we can't possibly leave out of our special day? I am fond to the Starks and my future husband is fond to the Targaryen family.

Thank you for the time. I mean it's a long shot I know but I was raised by a mother who always told us it never hurts to ask so why not ask.

Not happy
It doesn't make sense. If this is the most successful show in Emmy history and is, I assume, therefore making HBO a mountain of money - then why are they giving us shortened seasons??
How on earth are they going to fit WoW and ADoS into 13 odd episodes?
You're on a winning train ride that no one is asking to stop except for some bizarre reason some top execs at HBO.....who should be having the most to gain out of all!
Following some rule they made up in their head about season limits for the sake of it. Unbelievable.
Break the mound already HBO. You're the only ones who's switching off the lights when everyone wants to keep partying.

Re: Not happy
This is why HBO is so good, because they know when to stop. Two seasons is enough to finish the story and they don't want the series to drag because of burned-out writers like all the other televisions do when they hit the jackpot with a TV show.

Costume Emmy
Great to see the TV version of Ice and Fire acknowledged and rewarded. It has set new standards for tech achievement re TV. Better than many movies.

That said had I a vote I would have voted for Outlander in the costume category. Incredible work on a show that also deserves to be acknowledged and rewarded.

(Re pulling plug after 13 - I think its Dan & Dan who wish to do that not HBO execs - they'd love to keep the network tent pole up.)

TomT
(My picks never win the Hugos either...but I keep voting anyway.)

Season 6 is Amazing
Season 6 is truly an amazing accomplishment, after 5 marvelous seasons.

Congrats to the HBO team and to you, Ser, for such success. The books are marvelous and the show is equally marvelous. The last five minutes of the episode The Door brought me to tears, and it was great to learn that you told them how that was going to happen.

Then there was that season 6 finale. Those first twenty minutes = Work. Of. Art. A stunning sequence beautifully portrayed with that amazing music. I've watched it a dozen times, and I'm still in awe.

Thank you, George, for sharing this world with us. It's been a hell of a ride.

Hope GOT sweeps the talent catagories. BTW, I'm a doctoral student in Mythological Studies and this term I'll be writing a paper on GOT for my Folklore & Fairytales class. If you'd like a copy when I'm done, let me know ;)
