Catching Up

I'm back from LA and the Emmy Awards, and as usual there's a zillion things to catch up on.

The Giants and Jets both won last weekend. They both made it more exciting than it needed to be, of course, but a win is a win is a win, and I'll take them. Life is magical and full of joy.

GAME OF THRONES also won big, as those of you who watched the Emmy telecast know. Three more wins, for writing, directing, and show. Added to the nine that we won last weekend, that's twelve, and gave GOT the record for most Emmys ever won by a primetime scripted series. With thirty-eight, we edged past FRAZIER. Congrats to all, and especially to Dan and Dave, who have put together a truly amazing team and made some television history in the process.

(I do wish our nominated actors and actresses had brought some gold home as well, though. With two finalists in Best Supporting Actor, and three in Best Supporting Actress, we ended up dividing the vote and competing against ourselves, I fear. But the performances we got from Peter, Kit, Lena, Maisie, and Emilia speaks for themselves, trophies notwithstanding).

Jimmy Kimmel did a great job as host.

For me, a couple of personal highlights were meeting Jim Kimmel, Jimmy's father, who is a big fan of GAMES, and getting the Emmy from Dennis Franz, an amazing actor whose work on NYPD BLUE remains some of the finest ever seen on television. Best police show ever, imnsho).

There were great parties both before and after the awards themselves... though I fear I may getting too old for such things. I turned sixty-eight on September 20th, and may have reached the age where I prefer quieter parties with comfortable chairs.

And now I'm home, and there's more work to do. Later, folks.

Happy Belated
Happy Belated birthday. Was great to see you in attendance at the Emmy's. I too was disappointed that none of the actors won, but your idea about competing against each other makes a lot of sense.
They all our great, but would have loved to see Lena win one for all the great work she does each season. Even though Cersei isn't the most, emm, likable character she always does wonders in every scene she is involved in.

Too old to party? Oh Bah humbug. I am 23 and I much prefer a comfortable chair and a nice small gathering with my most beloved.
I was extremely pleased Game Of Thrones won so many Emmys, especially Battle of the Bastards. Visually I feel it was one of the best on television.
Eagerly awaiting Winds of Winter though to be honest. Hope work goes well for you.

GRR,

I look forward to seeing you happy and healthy at those events for many years hopefully well into your next HBO series as well as the Jets winning the Super Bowl. I am guessing another GRR HBO series is more likely to come in the near future though!

HBD and thanks for all the entertainment you have provided over the years!

George, I hope one day you see the error of your ways and renounce the Freys of football, the NY Giants, and join us gentlemen-scholars known as the Philadelphia Eagles. Winter playoffs are coming.

I've been meaning to tell you this
Hi, george, I'm a fan from Brazil.
Two years ago, I've suffered a pretty rough patch in my life, felt depressed, wanted desperately to kill myself. At the time, I was reading A Dance with Dragons for the first time. By the time I had finished, the book had not only cheered me up, but left me craving for more.
Then I realised I couldn't kill myself anymore. I needed to know what happened next. I needed Winds of Winter. Back then, it was the only thing I wanted. I said to myself:
I'll just wait for the two last books then I will be gone from this miserable earth, just 5 years tops and I'm out of here.
Your delay saved my life. Now I have many reasons to live for, Winds of Winter still being one of them, for sure.
Sounds weird, but I wanna thank you for taking so long to write.
Quite unusual feedback, huh?
Took as long as you want. I just want them to be good. I'll be waiting for them. Promise.

"Best police show ever, imnsho"

I did like NYPD BLUE, although at least the first couple of seasons. But I did find myself preferring HILL STREET BLUES (which the BBC started showing around the same time) and later, of course, much preferred THE WIRE, the Greatest TV Show Ever. Although calling THE WIRE a cop show might be over-simplifying it a bit.

36 and I don't particularly like parties of any stripe. I'm an introvert through and through and rebel against spending much time at large gatherings of people I barely know. Give me a few close friends or family members over a party any day.

And yeah, to repeat what has been said by others above, I'll take THE WIRE over NYPD BLUE. Most cop shows settle into predictable formula. It's pretty rare to get a cop show that evolves into an in-depth critical examination of an American city on multiple levels, the reason its institutions fail and how those institutions warp those who are a part of them into perpetuating the failure.

Not at all surprised it never caught on, though, beyond people online gushing about it. Most people who settle in for a night's entertainment probably are more interested in Dany frying people with a dragon than they are being reminded forcefully of the intractable sociopolitical failings of the United States in the 21st century.

License To Do A Game
Hi, first I need to say I'm a big fan of your books, little disappointed on the series when they kill character that's not dead in the books, or change characters as with Robb's wife Jayne Westerling to a random woman.

I own a little indie game company. And I wonder if I can get a license to make a strategy game based on A Song of Ice and Fire, the game will take place under the civil war, Dance of the Dragons. And not use any content created by HBO's TV-series team. Only happen in the same universe, I will create own design versions on the sigils and so on.

Sincerely,
Jean Philippe

I appreciate the kind words, but all subsidiary rights are already licensed. You will have to find a different IP.

Game of thrones spinoff writers test
Happy birthday Mr. Martin and congrats again on the Emmys !! Since Benioff and Weiss are leaving after the completion of the series, are you going to test new producers and writers for any Game of thrones spinoff project the same way you did with Benioff and Weiss ?

I'm worried about our matchup tomorrow with Brother of Chucky. I don't know if we're as good as we've been thus far, and not sure if they're as bad as they've been.

the Jets, Northwestern, and birthday wishes
George,

We share a some connections...namely Jets and Northwestern fandom and, of course, that I love Game of Thrones. I'm currently watching Northwestern stay in it with Nebraska. I am lucky enough to have a first edition copy of Game of Thrones (Bantam) but haven't seen that you are around the NJ/NYC area. I live in NJ and wonder if you have plans to be in the area and if you're doing any appearances or signings. Hope so.

Happy belated and congrats on the Emmy's!!

NYPD Blue & Jets
Mr. Martin sorry my Chiefs had to treat the jets like that. Who knew a jet could be intercepted that many times before it crashes ;). Do you really think NYPD Blue was a better police show than the wire? GOT is by far and away my fav TV show of all time with The Wire so close behind it due to the realness.
