South of the Border

Strange to say, although I have lived in New Mexico since 1979, I have never really visited Old Mexico. Oh, I attended a Westercon in El Paso a few years back, and spent an afternoon in Juarez with some other fans and writers. And I spent a few hours in Tijuana back in the late 80s, I believe, while attending Comicon in San Diego. But that hardly counts. There's a lot more to Mexico than the border towns.

My first real visit to Mexico starts tomorrow, when I jet down to Guadalajara for the Guadalajara International Book Fair: https://www.fil.com.mx/ingles/i_info/i_info_fil.asp

I'm one of the guests at the conference. I'll be doing interviews, a press conference, a live streaming event, and a signing. I expect I will be doing some tequila tasting as well. I am informed that Guadalajara is the tequila capital of Mexico.

I am looking forward to meeting my Mexican publishers, editors, and fans.

This is my last scheduled event for 2016. My appearance schedule for 2017 is very limited, and will remain so until WINDS is completed. So if you want to meet me or get a book signed, this will be the last chance for a good few months...

See you south of the border.

King-Beyond-Trump's Wall
What are the chances of you staying in Mexico during the construction of Trump's wall/fence? I have a vision of you uniting all of the deadly Mexican cartels who have been at war with one another for years. They all rally to your leadership and destroy the barrier for the hope of living in America and someday owning their own landscaping business.

Could I pitch this to your publishers? Sort of a Hemingway meets Mance Rayder idea.

Is there an opportunity of a New chapter?
If I can't get a sign book, I hope that you could read us a New chapter, that would be amazing. Was a contest to Win the opportunity to get into the conference, the ticket ran out in minutes, was crazy... See you on Friday :3

You will be another day at FIL? Or you enjoy the city these day before the Friday?

Have a great day

Chess for Secrets....
...if you find the time, let me know, I'd love to beat you in a game of chess ..... for secrets, of course.....

I realize it's a lot for you to lose, and I'd beat you handily, but if you feel like a bit of a gamble.......

Remember, as Jaqen H'ghar once said, "Valar Loseghulis" ....

Hello mr. George, I really hope you enjoy coming to my hometown. I can tell people is very excited to meet you (since I couldn't obtain tickets for the meet & greet, nor the conference).

I only ask for two things: 1 - try authentic tacos or burritos (I'd suggest "Los burritos de Moyahua") and 2 - live a lot of things with mexican people, because our cultura is really rich, and we are much more than a stereotype.

Oh, and I was hoping to ask you this personally but since I won't be able, here it goes number 3 - plase tell me if Sallahador's name is based on "Salvador", because if so, he and I would be (like we say here) "tocayos" and I might even add it as an alias in my Facebook page.

I hope you come to Mexico many more times in the future!

I'm asking this to avoid hyped news that flood the internet

Conventions
Hello Ser,

I was looking at your appearances for next year to see if you were going to be close, and I saw you're going to be in Long Beach, where I live. But your website says May 10-15, Stokercon's says April 28-30, could you verify? And also do you think you'll be doing book signings there?

Thank you,

Eric

Try mezcal, ser, in the tequila capital. A drink as complex and rewarding as Jaime Lannister circa A Feast for Crows.

hola
Hey Mr. Martin,

I just want to say thank you for the heads up on where you're at and update on how things have been going.

I also want you to know something: it's okay. I've read some of your posts and I understand that WOW hasn't gone as you had originally hoped. But really, it's okay. I've been a fan of ASOIAF since 2013 and love your work. But I don't want you to feel frustrated or negative. I want you to be happy. You have a beautiful gift in literary and you used it to create an awesome world that I've come to enjoy deeply. And while I know the pressure is still present, I don't want that pressure to ruin this process for you.

I sincerely hope you have a good time in Guadalajara, a very merry Christmas and the happiest of new years ahead. :)

Cheers,

Andrew

I would posit that you still would not have visited Old Mexico. I was the same as you, spending the first six years of my life in Tucson (and visiting Nogales), and visiting my relatives in El Paso for decades (thus visiting Juarez), but my chance at visiting Mexico proper came when I went down to stay with Kate Elliott and her husband in Puebla. Jay was still in graduate school and was doing a survey of pre-Columbian artifacts, so (as you do) I went down to visit. I got to wander through fields with some archaeologists and eat tacos from roadside vendors. I went shopping with Alis (Kate) and the kids, and wandered the zocalo. I climbed all over the pyramids at Teotihuacan, and got sick after eating cheese in Mexico City. It was a great trip, and I don't think I saw Old Mexico, either.

But it's a start.

Mi Casa es su Casa
I wish, with all my heart, that I could be there but alas, my 2 year old and my 5 month old babies cannot take care of themselves and would make lousy book fair partners were I to drag them there in my feverish, starstruck haste. I cannot believe you will be in my country and that I will be only a few hours away. It would be wonderful if you could share your thoughts and a few words after the visit, what you enjoyed, what you saw, what you ate! Aw man! I wish I could meet you! Welcome to Mexico! You are so, so respected and admired.

New York area convention around March 2017?
I'd regret not asking:

My regional scifi convention for the NYC/Long Island area, I-CON, got shut down in 2013 due to Hurricane Sandy. This caused a lot of financial problems and other hassles which shut overthing down. I thought the con was over and done given that we haven't had one in three years...

...then yesterday I awoke to the announcement that they're finally restarting the con in March 2017. They're still on shaky legs and could really use an A-list scifi author to anchor their return so it doesn't all fall apart again.

By any small chance, did the starts align in such a way that you just happen to be in the NYC area around March-ish?

More likely it will be Winds of Winter work, I know.

George,
I completely understand if you prefer not to answer this question, but will you possibly be writing a series of 'Last Year' posts as you did last year? I'd also just like to thank you for your wonderful stories.

I don't know. I don't plan these posts in advance, you know, I just blog when I feel like it and have something to say. Sometimes I have one of my minions blog in my stead, when I get too busy.

That has been such a depressing year, I am not sure I want to revisit it in any depth. But we'll see.
