Survived Another Xmas

Another Christmas has come and gone.

I have to admit, Halloween and Thanksgiving are my favorite holidays. Christmas has always been too stressful, at least since I became an adult (a long long time ago). But this year's was relatively mellow. I spent it at home with Parris, friends, and cats, and a good time was had by all.

There are things I like about Christmas, though. Watching Christmas movies, especially. A CHRISTMAS STORY is a favorite, and I also like to binge watch all the various versions of the Dickens classic CHRISTMAS CAROL. Alastair Sim, George C. Scott, Reginald Owen, Mickey Mouse, Albert Finney, Bill Murray... they all have their points, and it's fun to compare and contrast. On balance, I still think the Sim is the best of the adaptations. And when you cross over to the parody side of the ledger, there's nothing but nothing comes close to the Blackadder version.

This year we also watched FOOTLIGHT PARADE, which has nothing to do with Christmas but is a fun film. One of the last of the great pre-Code films, it's amazing to see how risque it is compared to what Hollywood would be making a year later and for decades to follow. And the musical numbers are unforgettable, especially Cagney in "Looking for My Shanghai Lil."

Anyway... merry merry to all my friends, fans, and readers out there. I hope Santa was good to you. At least those of you who were nice. As for those of you who were naughty.. come sit here next to me.

How about Magoo's version?
I agree Sim's is still the best adaptation- I actually think Mr Magoo's version is my second favorite. Maybe childhood nostalgia but I love it. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas George!
I remember seeing a story on CBS Sunday Morning where they had two Dickens historians both list The Muppets version of A Christmas Carol as their favorites.

Will you be so kind as to give another LAST YEAR(Year in Review) post(s)? Also if you decide to, remember to be careful and take precautions so LiveJournal doesn't erase your posts like last year.

Muppet's Christmas Carol
I do believe Muppet's Christmas Carol is a superior version.

Re: Muppet's Christmas Carol
I would have to agree about Muppet's Christmas Carol being the best.

RE: Merry Christmas George!
I do love the Muppets adaption. It probably has the the best Ghost of Christmas Present in any adaption. He just oozes joy, and you can't help but feel festive as he sings.

Also, happy to see George give a shout out to Blackadder! Brilliant show, that is a British classic, but many Americans haven't even heard of it, let alone watched it.

I would also like to see another year in review post. Last years was a great read, the only painful bit being that George felt he had let his fans down (he hadn't). However, I imagine writing another review could be quite emotionally taxing, so I would rather George does what makes him happy, and not feel obliged to talk about anything.

Happy Boxing Day
I should really be out hunting wrens today, but you've just sent me way back in time, to watching Footlight Parade whilst under the influence at the Elgin Theatre in NYC (probably as a double feature with 42nd Street or one of the Golddiggers musicals). Busby Berkeley had to be on something. Weird dude.

Christmas
Merry Christmas!

You are right about Blackadder's Christmas Carol, it is superb.

As for the Footlight Parade, Pre-Code stuff is great, Code really changed the landscape. Although Footlight Parade is great and historic in regard to multiple thing, I am somewhat partial to Bacon's previous feature, 42nd Street, which is similar to the Footlight Parade. I don't know whether you watched it, but either way it could make for a nice entertainment next Christmas.

Watching movies for Christmas is great tradition, I frequently watch Ben Hur, it has somehow became quintessential Christmas movie (regrettably, new one is trash)

Enjoy the holidays.

The George C. Scott version of A CHRISTMAS CAROL will always be my favorite but Mr. Magoo's is definitely a close second!
Merry Christmas George! Did Santa bring you anything to read? THE LIES OF LOCKE LAMORA was under my tree and I can't wait to start it.

Ahh, Christmas
When I was in primary school, I always enjoyed reading, but as I moved into my teenage years I was engulfed by social media instead. For Christmas 2014, my mum and dad got me ASOIAF, which resparked my love for reading. Those books have honestly changed my life. Thank you!

WHAT?!
There is a Black Adder Christmas Carol? How have I gone this long without seeing it? I will remedy this oversight, on my part, this evening. Thank you for your faithful tutelage in all that is good.

All the best to our favourite Santa lookalike!
Things have been pretty quiet here. I'm currently at my Dad's in Hull; he's recently been diagnosed with an inoperable tumour, but he's hoping to keep going for while yet. I've told him there are a couple more seasons at least of GoT to look forward to, as an incentive! I'm looking forward to the next book, too!

Christmas Movie Opinion
George,

I'm glad you had a Merry Christmas, and I wish you a Happy New Year. I do have one question for you, if you don't mind. Do you consider Die Hard to be a Christmas movie? Thanks!

Merry Christmas George. Your alien may be tired, but I'm glad to see you in good spirits. All the best to you and yours.

Santa Fe Kremlinologists on the internet say that when you display your the froggy icon, it is a good sign. I'll take it.

Christmas Story!
George that's awesome haha, every year me and all my family just sit back and keep the 24 hour A Christmas Story marathon playing throughout the day. Me and my cousins grew up watching that film on Christmas Eve, such good memories and a hilarious movie.

Dear Mr. Martin, what do you think of all those "GRRM wrote the script for 2016"jokes regarding all those celebrities deaths?

FOOTLIGHT PARADE
First Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

How nice to hear someone else discovered the joys of FOOTLIGHT PARADE. Amazing cast, nicely naughty and amazing dance numbers by Busby Burkeley. I have always loved Ruby Keeler's dancing, but James Cagney is always amazes.

If you love A Christmas Story and you have not checked out Jean Shepherd's "In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash" it is a wonderful read. Nostalgia at its best.

Christmas Carol
Agree that Sim's version remains the best - ghosts of prosperous men trying to help woman with child remains one of the great cinema images of the season.

But truth be told I got started as a kid with the Mr. Mago version and still love rewatching.

Merry Twelve Days of Christmas - enjoy them all.

(You should invent an equvailant celebration for Westerous. The Seven Days of Yule?)

Hope your holidays were wonderful, Mr. Martin. Personally, I choose unconventional movies for Christmas. I'll watch Elf with the siblings, then the minute they are gone, either Die Hard or GoT. Santa was VERY good to me, nearly doubled the size of my library. Despite the fact that i retain a place of honor on the not so nice list. But then, is a Lannister ever on the nice list? I'd bet not!
