I've also heard rumors of the Jets trading for Denver's Siemian should the Broncos manage to grab Romo. Thoughts on Siemian?

"Sean Salisbury? Are you kidding me? He couldn't throw the ball in the ocean if he was standing on the beach!" -- HBO and CBS analyst Dan Marino to Adam Sandler on the set of the remake of The Longest Yard, after Sandler told him he'd used Salisbury, the former Viking quarterback and current ESPN analyst, to help him learn how to play quarterback in the movie.

Oh no
As a resident of Chicago, you will have my deepest sympathies if this turns out to be true.

Silver lining
You'll get to look at his wife on Sundays.

He has to land somewhere...
There was much rejoicing in Denver when he was traded. Sure, the Broncos didn't do squat until Manning arrived some years later, but we didn't have to deal with a QB with a child-like temperament. Good luck...

I hear the Browns may be in the mood to simply flip Osweiler...

Cutler isn't terrible. He will not be the worst of the Jets problems.

Blame McDaniels.
He cut him from Denver while he was our coach and unleashed him into the world.

As a Pats fan all I can say is: 😂😂

But can you still take solace?
I mean, Brandon Marshall is leaving the Jets...for the Giants!

Could be worse
Not sure how for you but for me as a New England fan, this just makes me do a seriously evil cackle... maybe we are the bad guys?

The Jets should sign Kaepernick. More exciting player than Cutler.

Well when you kill off so many beloved characters, you get Jay Cutler as your quarterback.

Welcome to your new nightmare, George. And it throws interceptions constantly.

Cutler has always been garbage. The next good Vanderbilt quaterback will be the first.

LOL....Time to go "All In" on the Giants...
In a bit of irony, the most charismatic player left on The Mighty Jets team was traded to The Giants!! Lets Go B Marsh, a great big man with the speedsters bracketing him! Double the excitement for the G-Men. The Jets may have The Cloven Hoof aka J. Cutler lead them into exile.

I agree that the Jets are making a terrible mistake considering Jay Cutler. I feel for you and other Jets fans, but as a Chicagoan and lifelong Bears fan I'm also relieved that the Bears decided to drop him. The last 8 seasons have been rough on us.

Jets are a Dumpster Fire
Next year will have to be about the Giants. The Jets are a dumpster fire.

Just think about how enjoyable the 20s will be. That will have to do. Because right now? Looks like a "five year gap" is on the way.

That Cutler guy
Being from Chicago, I noticed an increase in "Lookout Blocks". That's where the quarterback hikes the ball, and all the guys on the front line step to one side and yell "Lookout!". Usually this only happens when the QB is being a jerk to the rest of the team. If this is the case with Cutler (and that's one problem among several), I don't envy any team that picks him up.
Lately, the McCaskey's haven't been making it very easy to be a Bears fan.

In other words
The Jets want someone with experience while they find the next QB of the future. The trick here is not to overpay for whoever they sign. Cleveland would probably trade Osweiler for a $20 Amazon gift card.

At least the Football Giants picked up Brandon Marshall. That offense will be dangerously hard to gameplan for. The defense should come back as one of the better defenses in the league with a year of continuity with some of the younger/newer players.

And they haven't even drafted yet!!

The Jets are an abomination already. Adding Cutler can't possibly make them worse....or can it?

Sorry... Who is Jay Cutler?

As a long time Detroit Lions fan I feel your pain. I remember Scott Mitchell.

RG3 was just released by Cleveland, if you're that desperate. In terms of dumpster fires, at least you're not a Washington fan. :-(

George - what do you think the ramifications of this are for Bryce Petty and Christian Hackenberg? I was hoping that at least one of them would get some major playing time this year while the team is in rebuilding mode, just to test them out and see what we've got for the future. That might have been fun, and fun is going to be pretty thin on the ground for Jets fans this year... :)

On a happier note, what do you make of Brandon Marshall coming to the Giants?

The Good: Cutler is actually a better QB than you've had in a while. I'm not saying he's actually a good QB, but he clears that (sadly) low bar.

The Bad: Signing Cutler would halt the search for a QB who is actually good.

At the end of the day, the Jets are many pieces away from being a legitimate championship threat. Having Jay Cutler as a placeholder while they put those pieces together (a multi-year project, as I see it) is not the worst thing that could happen.
Mar. 11th, 2017 11:09 pm (UTC)
Long term, it might be better for the Jets to finish 1-15 next year than to finish 5-11, which is probably the best Cutler could deliver.

If they want just a placeholder, sign Fitz again.

Or maybe let the two young QBs play, see if either one has anything. It worked for Dallas with Dak.
Mar. 11th, 2017 11:48 pm (UTC)
That's a perfectly fair point (though I think they'd be setting a young QB up for failure, unlike Dak, who has the benefit of the NFL's best o-line, a sterling receiving corps, and a stellar run game). I guess the more alarming point is the fact that the front office would consider Cutler an actual solution to your offensive woes. That's a symptom of the real problem: a front office that seems to make a lot of weak moves.
The impact of this is compounded by the fact that the Jets play in a division with a team that appears to use black magic to put its team together. I would say Belichick has made a deal with the devil, but I'm 99% sure Belichick actually is the devil...
Mar. 12th, 2017 12:38 am (UTC)
I don't know as that would be a good comparison. Dak was heralded throughout training camp and preseason for his maturity and abilities. Those 2 QB's have not wowed any of these professional talent coaches and fellow players, if they had the media would be all to eager to report on it. I did notice that you hadn't listed Jay Cutler as one of the qb's you hoped the Jets didn't pick up, yeah missed one apparently. All jokes aside, he is solid when he plays to his abilities but he is immobile and rendered useless after he gets hit a couple of time not to mention damn boring to look upon(I have watched allot of Bears games sadly).

Oh. That is a lot better than what I heard from a source in the Jets front office that shall remain nameless. Supposedly, the top brass are soooo convinced that Brock Osweiler is the man after what he did as starter on teams with what the GM feels are "pathetic" supporting casts in Denver and Houston that the Jets are trading away their 2017 and 2018 first and second rd picks and their 2019 3rd pick for him. "Our third stringers are better than crap players like Hopkins and Miller; and our offensive line is light years ahead of Houston's; our defense is better too; don't even get me started on the garbage wide receivers in Denver; if he can score with them he can put up 40 points a game with us" was the exact quote.

I may or may not be lying.

Would you rather have Cutler or Romo?

It's March, the Wildcats deserve your attention. Not the Jets!

Just wanted to say I completely agree
Totally agree good ser... I would rather have Sanchez back than Cutler. If you recall, we seriously considered taking him in 2006- the word was we valued Matt Leinart at #4 overall (-- having failed to get the #2 pick from the Saints for Bush, the Saints apparently asked for the sun, moon, and stars, then wanted the solar system added on, then they wanted even more) but not Cutler... so there was several moves contemplated by GM Mike T to move around in order to get Cutler (but not at #4 overall). THANK THE LORD we took Brick and then doubled down with Nick.

Hopefully we don't screw up this year- no QB is worth taking IMHO- I say trade down to take an OT and get an extra 2nd round pick, then take the best available DB and another OL in the 2nd... if not, the only thing i'd want at #6 is the top CB or S (seeing as I don't believe there is neither an OL nor any QB worth taking that high).

BTW- I think you hit the breastplate squarely with the warhammer when you said bring back Chad Pennington- I think he would make an absolutely excellent coach and I'm surprised he hasn't been brought to the team more. I think he would be an excellent influence and teacher to Hackenberg, whom I believe to have real deal potential and a lot better than he gets credit for.

Good Fortune in the Writing to Come, ser.

QB for you
You always could go and grab Brock Osweiler. That oughta make Cutler look like a better option.

As a Jets fan, I'd rather go 2-14 with either Petty or Hackenberg than 7-9 with Cutler, or any other veteran. We'll be a bad team this year, no matter who is taking the snaps. See what you have in the kids. Either they can play, or they can't. Be awful for a year or two, and rebuild. Being bad but not awful just means the 10th pick in the draft instead of a top 3 pick, and gets us nowhere in the long term. If we can finally get a franchise QB at the start of his career (at a time that Brady's career is ending), there will be something to be excited for the the '20s.

I wonder how many cupcakes it will take to get Cutler or Kapernick? Possibly a croissant or even better, some turnovers?
