Another Night, More Flyers

With the NIGHTFLYERS television series deep in the throes of pre-production and set to start filing over in Limerick soon, my original novella will soon be available again... twice.

Tor is going to reissuing NIGHTFLYERS & OTHER STORIES, the short story collection we released originally in 1985. More details on that one in my post of January 18, below.

Bantam Spectra is also going to be publishing NIGHTFLYERS, as a stand-alone deluxe illustrated hardcover. The text will be the original novella, in its expanded 30,000 word version. The Bantam edition will also include fifteen interior illustrations and two endpapers from the astonishing and talented David Palumbo, printed in four color. Release is scheduled for May 29.

The cover is by Larry Rostant:

A few months later, in late August, Bantam will release a trade paperback tie-in edition, featuring key art from the TV series on the covers, with Palumbo's interior illustrations in black & white.

If you haven't read "Nightflyers" yet, you will have plenty of opportunity. Hope you enjoy it.

Nightflyers yayyyyyyyy
I am so excited for this series! I saw the movie as a kid (in the mid 90s) then read the novella a few years later. I’ve always thought the concept was phenomenal. But if Tuf Voyaging isn’t made into a tv show in my lifetime it will be a great travesty. It’s a damn good time to be a vigorous reader with the likes of George and so many other talented authors alive in my time. Cheers to the future and continuous success for this genius.

I'd love some new thousand world stories after you're done with ASoIaF. Those tales of yours from the '70's and '80's are my favorite SF ever. "The Stone City", "In the House of the Worm", "Sandkings", "The Glass Flower", so many beautiful, brilliant stories. I hope you get around to finishing Avalon some day.

Exterior Filming in Limerick
Dear Mr. Martin,

Will they be using the city of Limerick for exteriors or are you just using the new soundstages for production in Limerick. I grew up in Limerick and was curious how the production was going to use the town.

That's what I thought, but yes, I'm dumb.

Thanks for the reply.

Interesting. I can see how you'd think that, but it never even occurred to me. Have you read the novella? I wonder if that makes a difference. Every time I see the word "Nightflyers", the first jump that my brain makes is to the movie Alien. Both of them scared the crap out of me the first time around.

It's a step up from the Melantha Jhirl cover you posted before.

That is a beautiful cover!
It might almost be worth the fee to import it all the way to Sweden. Almost...

But then you have it be a 30 000 word version? Man, I have no idea how many words my version was. I only remember it being in the same collection as "A song for Lya". It was a really long time ago.

Long form?
Just so I'm reading this right: All three books will have the longer version of the novella, correct? But only the first publication--the Tor mass market paperback--will have the additional stories?

P.S. That cover is gorgeous.

I'm thrilled
Hey, George.
I'm thrilled about the new TV show, I really liked the novella and can't wait to see its adaptation.
Small question - would you ever consider releasing The Thousand Worlds under one or two volumes?

Sure, I'd consider it. One day, maybe.

I only have the Nightflyers stand-alone novella. What are the "other stories"?I'm thinking these other stories might be the only work of yours I haven't read! Shame! And I'm a librarian too...
