Another Great Thing About Barack Obama

That's so cool that I'm willing to forgive him for being a Harry Potter fan.

I bet I have a better Spidey collection than he does, though.

Let's just hope his spider-sense starts to tingle whenever the country is in danger.

Just having read all the Potter books doesn't mean he's a *fan*. He does have two young daughters, after all. And it became such a part of the culture that he might have felt obligate to read them, at least once.

While my dad is not black (or even half black), I knew Barak reminded me of my father. Now I know! Both are avid Spider-man and Conan collectors! Sweet. If Barak wasn't my favorite before, he certainly is now!

Apparently at the Leesburg rally (a town near where I live), someone decided that instead of actually asking Barack Obama a question, to simply say, "All your base are belong to us." Barack Obama replied "What you say?" without missing a beat.

I hadn't realized you didn't like Harry Potter. I've never read any of them, though, and don't expect to get around to it. I did recently read The Lies of Locke Lamora because someone told me that I'd like it since I like your work. And I saw a blurb from you on it. I blew through it way too fast, though. So if you have any reading recommendations for me to pass the time while I wait for ADWD, they'd be welcome!

I am most certainly NOT GRRM (I wish...), but I'll take a stab at two suggestions:

There's a sequel to Lies of Locke Lamora - Red Seas Under Red Skies. It's not quite as good as the original, in my opinion, but that may be a function of it setting up the rest of the series.

Also very much worth checking out are the Malazan books by Steven Erikson. They take a bit of work getting into, since there are no infodumps ever, but they're immensely rewarding epic fantasy.

I personally enjoyed the Harry Potter series (nowhere near as much as Ice and Fire though). If nothing else they inspired more children to read, which is always a good thing, and also means when they grow up they'll be reading your books!

As to Spidey ... President Bush had his "Axis of Evil", but I'm pretty sure President Obama will not be warning us about the global "Sinister Six".

He's allowed to have read all the Harry Potter books (it doesn't say he's a fan) because he's got young kids. Reading to your kids is important!

Also, in the Newsweek behind-the-scenes article John McCain is described as a jock and Obama a nerd (he makes Star Trek references just before claiming victory over Hillary). I think that's why everyone is happy he won. If Hollywood has told me anything, it's that people love to see a geek beat a jock.

When he said he was a fan of HBO, particularly The Wire, it was a great moment. Maybe he can endorse A Song of Ice and Fire when it makes it to the screen?

Not sure what to make of his declaration that Omar (shotgun-wielding, drug-dealer-robbing vigilante) is his favourite character of The Wire though. Except it's awesome, obviously.
