Another Great Thing About Barack Obama

He collects Spider-Man and Conan the Barbarian comics.

That's so cool that I'm willing to forgive him for being a Harry Potter fan.

I bet I have a better Spidey collection than he does, though.

Let's just hope his spider-sense starts to tingle whenever the country is in danger.

Hey, what's wrong with Harry Potter?
Nov. 11th, 2008 10:10 pm (UTC)
Harry steals George's potential customers. In fact, ADWD was delayed until HP interest falls to 0% because else ADWD woudn't be a 100% as his evil plan intended.

Wow, that would be maddeningly nonspecific spidey-sense. He'd never get sleep! "Something... somewhere... is in danger!"

Icon love.

I've always thought it would be nice to have a President who was at least as much of a nerd/geek as I am.
Nov. 11th, 2008 10:10 pm (UTC)
And he's a treckkie!
Nov. 11th, 2008 10:12 pm (UTC)
And he knows All Your Base.

I seriously think we're looking at the country's first geek president.

Just having read all the Potter books doesn't mean he's a *fan*. He does have two young daughters, after all. And it became such a part of the culture that he might have felt obligate to read them, at least once.

Or not.

I knew there was something familiar about that man...
While my dad is not black (or even half black), I knew Barak reminded me of my father. Now I know! Both are avid Spider-man and Conan collectors! Sweet. If Barak wasn't my favorite before, he certainly is now!
Nov. 11th, 2008 10:24 pm (UTC)
Apparently at the Leesburg rally (a town near where I live), someone decided that instead of actually asking Barack Obama a question, to simply say, "All your base are belong to us." Barack Obama replied "What you say?" without missing a beat.
Nov. 11th, 2008 10:41 pm (UTC)
NO. WAY. Is that really true?

OMFG, and here I thought I couldn't adore the man any more than I already do.

I hadn't realized you didn't like Harry Potter. I've never read any of them, though, and don't expect to get around to it. I did recently read The Lies of Locke Lamora because someone told me that I'd like it since I like your work. And I saw a blurb from you on it. I blew through it way too fast, though. So if you have any reading recommendations for me to pass the time while I wait for ADWD, they'd be welcome!
Nov. 11th, 2008 11:09 pm (UTC)
I am most certainly NOT GRRM (I wish...), but I'll take a stab at two suggestions:

There's a sequel to Lies of Locke Lamora - Red Seas Under Red Skies. It's not quite as good as the original, in my opinion, but that may be a function of it setting up the rest of the series.

Also very much worth checking out are the Malazan books by Steven Erikson. They take a bit of work getting into, since there are no infodumps ever, but they're immensely rewarding epic fantasy.

"What is good in life, Obama?"
"To crush your enemies, to win 365 electoral votes, and to hear the lamentations of their Palin. And hope, of course."

And I knew I loved Obama.

Bush is still in office. Poor Mr. Obama must not be getting any sleep.

Also, it's not so much that this is a little-known fact so much as it is a little-discussed fact.

Our President-elect was a Constitutional Law professor. If anyone hasn't let that sink in yet, please take time to let it do so.

What's that? Hello again, Constitution. I missed you!

Another Great Thing About GRRM

He publicly hates on Harry Potter.
Nov. 11th, 2008 11:13 pm (UTC)
I personally enjoyed the Harry Potter series (nowhere near as much as Ice and Fire though). If nothing else they inspired more children to read, which is always a good thing, and also means when they grow up they'll be reading your books!
Nov. 11th, 2008 11:17 pm (UTC)
Hey now, I liked Harry Potter.

However, I like your books way, way, way, way, waaaaay better. Harry Potter wasn't able to make me miss train stops like SoIaF did!

Since Barack is a Spidey Fan...
... he understands that with great power comes great responsibility.

That's something else I want in a prez.

Nov. 11th, 2008 11:43 pm (UTC)
Heh. Well, he does have two young daughters, so it's almost required to know Harry Potter.
Nov. 11th, 2008 11:47 pm (UTC)
while spidey is cool...

harry potter rocks my socks!
Nov. 12th, 2008 12:03 am (UTC)
I wonder if he's just collected the old Marvel Conan comics, or if he's picking up the current Dark Horse series? Good stuff, started by Kurt Busiek and continued by Tim Truman.

As to Spidey ... President Bush had his "Axis of Evil", but I'm pretty sure President Obama will not be warning us about the global "Sinister Six".
Nov. 13th, 2008 08:40 pm (UTC)
Maybe a few of the Conan novels that our dearly departed Robert Jordan wrote. I am waiting for "A Memory of Light" almost as much as ADwD.
Nov. 12th, 2008 12:11 am (UTC)
Revenge of the Nerds
He's allowed to have read all the Harry Potter books (it doesn't say he's a fan) because he's got young kids. Reading to your kids is important!

Also, in the Newsweek behind-the-scenes article John McCain is described as a jock and Obama a nerd (he makes Star Trek references just before claiming victory over Hillary). I think that's why everyone is happy he won. If Hollywood has told me anything, it's that people love to see a geek beat a jock.

Nov. 12th, 2008 12:14 am (UTC)
When he said he was a fan of HBO, particularly The Wire, it was a great moment. Maybe he can endorse A Song of Ice and Fire when it makes it to the screen?

Not sure what to make of his declaration that Omar (shotgun-wielding, drug-dealer-robbing vigilante) is his favourite character of The Wire though. Except it's awesome, obviously.
Nov. 12th, 2008 12:24 am (UTC)
George, perhaps you should send the President-elect a set of "Wild Cards" books and "Song of Ice and Fire" to date as a housewarming gift.
