Huge, Huge News

HBO has given the production order.

They will be filming the pilot episode of A GAME OF THRONES.

It's just the pilot so far. They'll need to see that before they decide whether to proceed with a full season's episodes. So let's all hope the pilot will kick serious ass.

It should. David Benioff and Dan Weiss did a terrific job with the script. And yes, all of you can relax, it's very faithful. Dan and David will be the executive producers for the pilot and (we hope) the eventual series.

More details when I have 'em. The news is very fresh. HBO just issued their own press release, which should be up on their website soon, if it's not there already.

Winter is coming to HBO. Hot damn.

This is awesome news. I have a question though. Do you GRRM have the rights to this project? Im just wondering if the worst happens and they do not pick up the series after the pilot is made will you have the rights to what is made so you could sell it your fans at least? Cause that would be brutal if it is made and then is shelved somewhere never to be seen....of course this is worst case scenario. I am happy for you and for all of your fans and will order HBO as soon as it is picked up and ready to air. Thanks!

Congratulations, sir. I will definitely root for the pilot's success. Winter is coming indeed :)

To reiterate the same damn thing everyone else appears to be saying (I'll be honest: I haven't read all 10+ pages of comments!): I am thrilled at this news and so happy for you and wish you the best of success with the pilot, and with the series if it should come to fruition.

And I really think it will.

The story is solid; the characters are *real*; there's already a built-in fan base that the HBO people can pretty much 100% count on to buy the DVDs, action figures, wall calendars, etc. (we are already, eh?); and most importantly for them: television needs something new and fresh and GOOD to counteract the boring old CRAP that's frequently on because that is a great way for them to make money.

I wonder if they're cooing over the possible cash as much as we're all cooing over the possible series? ;)

Way to go, GRRM. I'm super happy for you. :D

Exciting news for an exciting day then. :) Will u be part of the screening process for actors and if u are how much will looks/similiarities to ur characters play a role in the choosing??

Sorry spelling is off tonight. Still recovering from the Steelers loss. :P

I am

This shall be the best that ever was. YAY! Congratulations, Mr. Martin!

Congratulations, I hope...
Now you have the Rowling Curse, George. That is, your series is now being filmed before it's finished. I'd say "Here's hoping that you finish stronger than she did despite the pressure of film fans wanting more..." but that would actually be rather insulting. So cheers, and good luck with the endeavour. May discussing the book with the creative professionals trying to translate it into film prove to be an inspiring experience.

(And Bran could SO kick Harry Potter's butt)

Congrats George! And congrats to all us ASOIF fans. Cant wait!! Fantastic news.

I'm so excited! DO we have any idea who is going to be on the cast list?
Haha I actually have already emailed W. Earl Brown from deadwood to play the hound. I think with make up he can pull it off :)
Actually if we can just push a lot of the deadwood cast into this I'd be really happy!

Just for fun...
I know that you have nothing to do with casting,

but I hope that Rufus Sewell could do Eddard Stark.

I'll be happy with whomever they cast, as long as they do it well, and get contracts that have a chance of keeping the actors for some years.

Re: Just for fun...

Well, actually if you want Rufus Sewell as Eddard Stark, you don't need to keep him for some years, but only for season 1 :)

Of course multiple-year contracts will be a key challenge for the other actors.

That is good news, George. I hope they cast the characters true to your creations. It will be great if they do!!

Well Done
Long time reader of your books including some of your earlier novels and short stories. Have never posted here before and didn't have an account until today but when i saw the news i just had to. Absolutely brilliant that they have optioned the pilot. Just hope its approved. I also think its great that you will be partly involved in writing the series. Again well done and if anybody deserves this its you because the story's and characters you create are well worth their place on the small screen

Nov. 13th, 2008 03:35 pm (UTC)

Incredibly Exciting!
Can't wait to tell the better half!
Sign me up for3 copies of the first season on DVD :O

PS- I bet you could turn a petition over to HBO to show them the DVD sales alone would justify production

HBO does fantastic shows, this is going to kick serious butt!!
Nov. 13th, 2008 06:24 pm (UTC)
I can't imagine how you're feeling, George, but I'd think it'll be the same excitement as the rest of us...multiplied several times!

Congratulations, George! Can't wait to see it on telly!
Nov. 13th, 2008 09:11 pm (UTC)
Hm. I guess you'd better finish the series then....
Nov. 14th, 2008 08:44 pm (UTC)

Heh-heh. :) Only if they pick up the full series . . .
Nov. 13th, 2008 09:13 pm (UTC)
I'll subscribe to HBO just for this...
Nov. 13th, 2008 11:08 pm (UTC)
I might have to get HBO...
This might be reason enough to get a TV working for more than Football..
Nov. 13th, 2008 11:28 pm (UTC)
Does any body know....
is there a way to watch HBO shows without getting HBO. I know that tV stations like fox have shows online, is it possible to do the same for HBO?
Nov. 13th, 2008 11:42 pm (UTC)
Re: Does any body know....
This is the kind of thing that HBO doesn't want to hear. They want you to purchase their programming. They are a for profit business. Help them make a business decision to film and air this series.

Email HBO!
Let them know that you will subscribe to their service in the event this series gets aired. Be polite. Be professional. HBO creates quality programming in order to attract subscribers. Nothing we do could be more powerful than letting the channel know they WILL attract new business by airing A Song of Ice and Fire.
