One and One

Spain
I figured the Giants were going to have a tough game today against the Redskins. Divisional games are always intense, the Skins have a hard-hitting defense, the G-Men were coming off this huge Plax-shoots-himself distraction, and Washington figured to be sky high off the Sean Taylor anniversary and his induction into their Ring of Honor.

On the other hand, I figured the Jets would win easily. They were at home, the weather figured to help their running game and hamper the Bronco aerial attack, Denver hasn't been able to stop the run all season, and the Jets had just defeated two much tougher teams in New England and Tennessee.

Show what I know.

Or, as Chris Berman likes to say, "that's why they play the games."

It was one and one alright, but just the reverse of the way I had it. Total domination by the Giants, but the Jets got embarassed on both sides of the ball. The only good moment in the Jets game was the amazing Thomas Jones roll-over-a-defender-bounce-up-again-and-score touchdown, which had to be seen to be believed.

This is easily the most schizophrenic Broncos team I've ever seen. They lose at HOME to the RAIDERS by 21 and then go on the road and hammer the Jets by 17.

Cutler, the D, and Royal were superb. But what on earth were the Jets thinking? They scored on two long runs and utterly abandoned the run (And Jones) in the second half.

But I'll take it. And a division title which could be clinched next week!

That was pretty awesome...almost as awesome as Bucs going 9-3 what?

Too bad the Chargers couldn't pull it together and beat Atlanta for me. (Or Green Bay beating Carolina while we're at it.) The Chargers have just fallen apart.

I don't get Denver. They beat the Falcons and Jets on the road, but in between they lose to the Raiders at home. As a Falcons fan, I'm still hurting over that loss, but strangely enough, Denver beating the Jets as well makes it feel a little better.

tinfoil hat theory of the day: did anyone else notice how every time Brett was running hurry up and getting in a rhythm, Denver had an injury time out? Once, twice, three times in a series???

Not so tinfoil. That's part of the game.

It was way suspect. I want to see next week for the broncos miraculous recoveries.

Re: I agree
can you imagine the practice sessions where the coach taught them how to fake injury effectively? I wonder what the sideline hand signal is for malingering.

Part of the game
....That's part of the game I'm afraid - if you dont want to use a Timeout and need to stall an offences Rhythm, fake an injury.

It's all tactics :) As a player I know this and accept it as part of the game.

I work at the Starbucks near Fedex Field (Redskins Stadium) and I got to meet and talk with a lot of NYGiants fans today. I let them know, much to my work mates' annoyance, that I was had moved from England to NYC and had a big soft spot in my heart for the Giants and I'd be rooting for them on day.

And yes, the play was incredible. To those who didn't see it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KboDHemDEXs (will probably be removed eventually).

Good job Giants. Im an Eagles fan and since the Giants are gonna win the division we need them to beat everyone but the Eagles. It will be a miracle if the Eagles make it but one can still hope. Next week we get to see if the Eagles have really corrected anything. I doubt it. We will probably abandon the run and go non-stop passing plays. Of course the Giants will see this a cover accordingly. Damn you Reid!!! Good luck next week, your team may need it as the Eagles like to play hard when they practically have no chance for the playoffs.

I wasn't concerned about this 'skins team. Even with the fiasco. Plax was already game planned out and everyone who was expected to play did. Let's face it. As good as Hixon has been he'll need to prove to be even better if teams are going to game plan for him. Pierce did not sound or look his normal confident self in post game Q & A. He and Bradshaw are going to have a difficult week or two. I'm extremely concerned about the Eagles... and the Cowboys. As for Plax... possible three year mandatory incarceration if convicted. Seeing that it was a 4th degree possession, he may get less (not sure). While he has hired the same lawyer who got Diddy off, the situation is quite different as there is no other fall guy, the gun is his and has been confiscated.

The Jets... paul maguire... Oh, say it ain't so. The play would have been truly memorable had they won. I seem to remember other plays like it in the past. I could be wrong. Oh well, hope they can bounce back stronger next week.

I figured that first Denver touchdown was going to have you yelling at the television. I went to bed before Jones's touchdown, OTOH, but found a clip of it -- amazing. He seems shocked that he got into the end zone at the end there.

The Dolphins putter into a victory, so I suppose I'm happy, but beating the woeful Rams by 4 points isn't very much to cheer about. Unfortunately, the Dolphins are a marginal team this year. Still, a lot better than last season, I suppose, so that's something.

I like that the Broncos and Raiders are so inconsistant. It makes me feel better about my Seahawks so utterly failing this year.

Don't forget to add the Patriots to the list of inconsistent teams. Their performance against the Steelers was atrocious and they looked nothing like the team that stomped the Dolphins last week.

GRRM, knowing your disdain for the Pats, I was surprised you didn't comment on how horribly they played. I think this loss may have sealed the deal on a Pats playoff bid (unless they can win the rest of their games this season, but I don't see that happening).

And lastly, how did the Colts do it again?!?! Every week they play horribly, but somehow manage to rally in the 4th quarter and win the game. It baffles me. If they keep up this sort of last-quarter-heroics, we may very well see Manning vs. Manning in the Superbowl. I'd prefer that over Jets vs. Giants. Ugh...I don't even want to think of that scenario.

Yeah, it was rough watching them flounder to two losses in one week. On the bright side, Holmgren and his "pass-run-pass-punt, (or for variety, pass-pass- run-punt)offense will be gone next year, hopefully along with the Defensive Coordinator and his Cover-0 defense. This has just been an awful year for Seattle sports period.

Redskins and Broncos
Well, I'm a DC native who has lived in Denver for almost 10 years now, so the Skins and the Donkey's are my teams.

I will give you that the Giants played a superb game today. But, as well as the Giants played, the Skins played that poorly. Actually, the same was true for the Jets against the Broncos. It wasn't just that the Broncos played really well, it's that the Jets just couldn't get into a good rhythm.

Oh well. At 7-5, the Redskins are almost statistically out of the playoff hunt behind Carolina and hated Dallas. 9-7 used to be enough to mkae the playoffs for the NFC, but it looks like those days are gone. Meanwhile, at 7-5, the Broncos are almost guaranteed to win their division. What happened to the AFC this year?

After watching Redskins fans wail and weep year after year, you should never worry about the 'Skins in big games...but Berman is right. You never know till you play the game.

Giants are looking great - better record now than they had last year when they won the Super Bowl? Impressive.

Being a hardcore Vikings fan, and also a bit of a realist, I hope and pray the Giants continue to run wild on everyone. If they don't have anything to play for by the last game it'll hopefully be an easy win for the vikes and we need all of those we can get. After all, we come from the land of the ice and snow and inept old washed up qb's

Giants
One thing that I really hate is how undeniably good the Giants are this season. I spent the whole summer trying to believe that the Super-bowl was a fluke and that the real Giants were on the verge of total meltdown. I don't think it's going to get any better this week when my (beloved though tragically bipolar) Eagles have to play them in NY.

If I don't say it, I'll burst
I don't know much about creative writing programs. But they're not telling the truth if they don't teach, one, that writing is hard work, and, two, that you have to give up a great deal of life, your personal life, to be a writer. - Doris Lessing

You become a writer because you need to become a writer - nothing else. - Grace Paley

If you wish to be a writer, write. - Epictetus

What an author likes to write most is his signature on the back of a check.- Brendan Francis Behan

A fantasy writer lives in the worlds he creates and merely vacations in reality from time to time
- unknown

I know you don't like people using your soapbox, but I figure I've paid 2 minutes rent via Barnes & Noble so I'm using my time. Many of your readers seem to be far more invested in your work than yourself. I understand it is difficult to write one novel, let alone a long series of them, but a writer is a writer because he can be nothing else. It should not be about the money or the acclaim or the number of franchises you can create. I have loved every word of A Song of Ice & Fire. I have lived in Westeros from cover to cover, vacationing in reality. Why can't you do the same?

Anyone feel brave enough to offer superbowl predictions before the playoffs even begin?

My bet is the Cowboys out of the NFC (sorry, I think the Giants are peaking at the wrong time and will fall much like this year's dominate AFC team) and the Steelers. Though, I might change that prediction if the Colts continue to remain hot.

Just Saying Hi
Hello, I just joined LJ and I just wanted to stop by and say "hi" to one of my favorite authors. A Song of Ice and Fire is absolutely SUPERB! I've eaten the four main books up in the matter of a month and can't wait until the new one comes out.

I know I'm one of many people that says a little prayer each night that HBO greenlights the series.
