Calendar Cancelled

I regret to announce that Michael Kaluta will not be illustrating the 2010 Ice & Fire calendar for DB Productions. I've seen some of the work Mike had done on the calendar to date, and it was gorgeous... but he's pulled out, and his reasons for doing so are good and sufficient. I am in complete support of his decision to wash his hands of this, and regret all the problems that his involvement in this project has caused him.

I have reached the end of my patience as well. I have instructed my agent to ask the Dabel Brothers for an immediate termination of our contract.

Unless another publisher suddenly hoves into sight, the problem-plagued 2009 Ice & Fire calendar may be the only one there ever is.

Those are really bad news u.u
But ,in the end, it may be for the best. We still don't know what may happen in the future ^^

Why not do a fan calendar? Have fans do the artwork, vote on the 12 best = instant calendar!

Not to put words in grrm's mouth, but it seems the problem stems from the people producing the calendar, not the art.

They need someone to print/distribute/etc.

I sincerely hope that some other(reliable and professional) publisher steps in.

Again, thank you for all your involvement in trying to sort out the calendar mess for us costumers, you didn't have to, and it is really much appreciated.

Ditto on the last comment!

You'll find a publisher, keep hope, sir! =D

To be fair, this is probably what would happen if one of your characters tried to make a calendar.
Apr. 20th, 2009 01:16 am (UTC)
LOL! The Dabel Brothers would be invading New Mexico as we speak.

I have to respect your decision. Well, this year's will be a definite collector's edition! Thanks for all you did to get this year's to happen!

Time for a new, clean, slate. Good luck in the future!

How disappointing! I'm so sorry to hear this.

There is a company called Amber Lotus - they do lots of beautiful calendars... more along the woo-woo sort of thing. Think zen, fractals, etc. But they might be a good source for a new publisher! I regret I didn't get a 2009 and was all prepared for the 2010 edition.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear that but, after recent events, it is perhaps unsurprising.

Any chance of us seeing Michael Kaluta working on another SoI&F project in the future, perhaps the world book?

Sad news. I hope another publisher decides to give it a go.

I say, and I believe I express the feelings of many:

I'll remain confident that somewhere somehow another calendar is made.

I'm glad you are no longer working with the Dabel Brothers. I finally received the 2009 Ice & Fire calendar I ordered from them. I only had to dispute my payment with PayPal in order to get them to send it. They also never answered any of my emails.

I think anyone who tried to buy anything from them recently can understand your decision. And we don't even need to know the details with Michael Kaluta to know his pulling out was probably warranted.

I'm sad for this notice...

I have a question, i not understand this part of your message:

I have reached the end of my patience as well. I have instructed my agent to ask the Dabel Brothers for an immediate termination of our contract.

This is valid only for calendar i hope, not for comics etc...really?

Apr. 19th, 2009 09:09 pm (UTC)
That's disappointing, but absolutely understandable. Here's hoping that, in the future, another calander can be made, but if not, oh well! The first was lovely.

Still haven't gotten mine for 2009 and 2009 is 1/3 over. That was the worst $60 US I have ever spent.
Apr. 20th, 2009 01:18 am (UTC)
If you paid through PayPal, go dispute the payment if it hasn't been too long. I got mine 8 days after I escalated my claim to a dispute.

Sorry to hear it, sir, but I've seen some of the behind-the-scenes horror on projects like that and sympathize. Best wishes to both you and Kaluta in recuperating.
Apr. 19th, 2009 09:19 pm (UTC)
Good riddance to bad rubbish, as the saying goes. The Dabel Brothers are complete trash and don't know how to handle customer service at all.

Now if only Jim Butcher would dump them and find a better group to work with, we'd be set!
Apr. 19th, 2009 09:25 pm (UTC)
Sorry to hear that it's come to this, but so it goes. I hope some day we'll be able to see the art Mr. Kaluta did complete.
Apr. 19th, 2009 09:53 pm (UTC)
and i tried so hard to get a 2009 calendar, to no avail. alas. :(
Apr. 19th, 2009 09:32 pm (UTC)
You're not the first person I've heard to have issues with a Dabel Brothers project.
Apr. 19th, 2009 09:36 pm (UTC)
Dang, sorry to hear that. I *really liked* the art on the calendars - would have bought one if not for the hassle apparently associated with actually getting one D:
I hope you and Michael manage to work out some future, more successful project.
Apr. 19th, 2009 09:56 pm (UTC)
I, for one, am happy to see you break ties with a company that has effectively robbed me and mistreated me for months. Sorry for your troubles, and it is too bad about the 2010 calendar. For someone in my position, it brings some satisfaction that they won't make any more money off of your franchise.

A devastating earthquake in my little world
That's very sad news for me too, needless to mention i'd wanted to get one copy myself as well. But ordered from amazon, which got a lot of trouble for me (emailing them a lot, to discover that I cannot get my own), but the anger subsided when i've decided to run for the 2010 calendars, in (vain) hope that they will be even more magnificent then this year's. But hearing these news from you George, and knowing, that I am unable to lay my hands on 2009's edition (it's pretty difficult, if not impossible to order it from my country, because a few of the selling companies ships them here)...

But hope dies last, and by all means I will try again to get one. A masterpiece from Westeros, never comes too late ;-)

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about that, even though... not so surprised, in the end. I guess it brought more troubles than satisfaction, for both you and us, the fans.

Oh well, I hope we'll get to see the work that Michael Kaluta had already done for the project, one of those days.

If there is ever another calendar project, I hope it'll be better handled than this one.

Cheer up, because all in all, this is the best decision that could be taken, all in all :/
Apr. 19th, 2009 10:29 pm (UTC)
not surprising. The Dabels are only hurting themselves with their constant problems and delays even if they put out good work when something is finally released.
