A Casting We Will Go

Spain
Well, Reuters has the story out already, so there's no longer any reason for me to keep mum. Yes, the rumors you've been seeing all over the web the last few days are true. Another huge piece has fallen into place for the HBO pilot of A GAME OF THRONES -- we have signed Sean Bean to play the part of Lord Eddard Stark.

For the movie fans out there, Sean Bean needs no introduction. I mean, what the hell, he was Boromir and he was Sharpe, he was terrific in both roles, and in a hundred other parts besides. I can't imagine a better Ned. The deal took some doing, so my fingers have been crossed for a month now (and boy, that made it hard to type), but now it's done, and I'm thrilled.

That's only part of the exciting news, however. Casting has been proceeding apace these past six weeks or so -- in New York and LA, London and Dublin, most recently in Australia. David and Dan and director Tom McCarthy have been looking all over the world for the right actors, and now they've filled some key roles as well.

For King Robert I Baratheon, we've got Mark Addy, a veteran British actor of stage and screen that many of you may remember from his fine turn in A KNIGHT'S TALE.

The roles of Joffrey Baratheon, the crown prince, and Viserys Targaryen, the beggar king, have also been filled... by Jack Gleeson and Harry Lloyd, respectively. Sorry, I haven't been able to find pictures of them on the internet yet, though I'm sure they are out there somewhere. I've seen readings by both Gleeson and Lloyd, and both should be terrific.

And last, but certainly not least, the role of the bastard Jon Snow will be played by a young actor named Kit Harington. You probably haven't heard of him yet... but you will, we're confident. David and Dan can't say enough about his talent and intensity.

Of course, there's a lot more roles still to fill, including some very crucial ones like the Lannister twins, the Stark children, and Daenerys Targaryen, so the search will continue for awhile. But we've begun, and so far I couldn't be happier. October is right around the corner.

Super exciting news! I'm usually very sceptical about books being turned into a good tv series, but this is just getting better and better.. WOW :)

I can see Cate Blanchett as Cersei.. probably a bit out of HBO's league though (not that I know anything about such things mind you :P)

Can't think of anyone else that has that ethereal but totally bitchy vibe that Cate can pull off.

Oh. My. God.

I was hoping for James Purefoy as Ned. Sean Bean never occurred to me. Oh my God. He's going to be *amazing*! And Mark Addy's going to be fantastic as Rob. Wow, what a cast you're getting!

HOORAY! Congratulations!

Great news! The rumors were definitely swirling, but it always pays to be cautious about it -- not least because the surprise is all the greater when they turn out to be true.

Wow, this is fantastic news! What better way to improve a rainy day, eh?

Sean Bean as Ned will most probably be awesome, and what I've seen of Mark Addy promises the same. October might be right around the corner, but it's going to be a long wait all the same.

Oooooh this is SO exciting! I never actually allowed myself to fantacize of Sean Bean as Ned, because I thought he would be too expensive too cast!! This makes the anticipation even bigger!
This actually changes everything, I think we may now be allowed to go ahead and daydream a little bigger for the rest of the cast!

As someone else has said, Harry Lloyd was in a Doctor Who story a couple of years back, and very good he was too.

Link to review of episode (with picture of Harry) below:
Quote from review: "Harry Lloyd as Jeremy Baines was a revelation – snotty, condescending and arrogant – as upper class youths of that day and age undoubtedly were..."
Perfect for Viserys - well done to HBO's casting director.

I was thinking about who should play each part, and Sean Bean was the only name I could come up with for Ned, so perfect! Now, can you get Brian Blessed for the Greatjon? *grin*

This is way beyond cool!!!! Woo-hooooo!!! (I would have preferred Liam Neeson for Ned, but hey, Sean is fantastic as well and will do fine! The others are also extremely good choices! Way to go!

Liam would have been perfect for the role 10-20 years ago. You have to remember that Ned is only in his mid 30's.

Awesome News...
but does this mean you'll have to let him 'in' on the infamous Jon Snow backstory!? We all know you can't trust actors with secrets....

Here's a suggestion for Gregor Clegane - a huge and scary looking russian boxer Nikolai Valuev :)

Gregor Clegane
Wile Valuev is physically perfect for Gregor he isn't an actor and doesn't speak English very well

the perfect actor for Gregor Clegane is Conan Stevens and he wants the part http://www.conanstevens.com/acting-movies-tv-film/auditions-and-castings/7.5-foot-tall-actor-required-for-ser-gregor-clegane-the-mountain-that-rides-for-hbo-tv-series.html

Amaaaaaazing casting! Hurrah! So very pleased about that! From what I've seen of the actors, they'll be great - Mark Addy is going to make an awesome Robert, and Kit looks absolutely perfect for the role of Jon Snow.

Not to mention Sean Bean! Who is awesome!

HURRAH!
