A Casting We Will Go

Well, Reuters has the story out already, so there's no longer any reason for me to keep mum. Yes, the rumors you've been seeing all over the web the last few days are true. Another huge piece has fallen into place for the HBO pilot of A GAME OF THRONES -- we have signed Sean Bean to play the part of Lord Eddard Stark.

For the movie fans out there, Sean Bean needs no introduction. I mean, what the hell, he was Boromir and he was Sharpe, he was terrific in both roles, and in a hundred other parts besides. I can't imagine a better Ned. The deal took some doing, so my fingers have been crossed for a month now (and boy, that made it hard to type), but now it's done, and I'm thrilled.

That's only part of the exciting news, however. Casting has been proceeding apace these past six weeks or so -- in New York and LA, London and Dublin, most recently in Australia. David and Dan and director Tom McCarthy have been looking all over the world for the right actors, and now they've filled some key roles as well.

For King Robert I Baratheon, we've got Mark Addy, a veteran British actor of stage and screen that many of you may remember from his fine turn in A KNIGHT'S TALE.

The roles of Joffrey Baratheon, the crown prince, and Viserys Targaryen, the beggar king, have also been filled... by Jack Gleeson and Harry Lloyd, respectively. Sorry, I haven't been able to find pictures of them on the internet yet, though I'm sure they are out there somewhere. I've seen readings by both Gleeson and Lloyd, and both should be terrific.

And last, but certainly not least, the role of the bastard Jon Snow will be played by a young actor named Kit Harington. You probably haven't heard of him yet... but you will, we're confident. David and Dan can't say enough about his talent and intensity.

Of course, there's a lot more roles still to fill, including some very crucial ones like the Lannister twins, the Stark children, and Daenerys Targaryen, so the search will continue for awhile. But we've begun, and so far I couldn't be happier. October is right around the corner.

Glad to see the project is on track. Sean Bean is apparently blessed/cursed to play great characters who die in the first installment of things. I look forward to seeing his Ned.

And based on the picture, Kit Harrington at least looks the part. I hope he proves equal to the challenge.

Circe and Jaime
I have heard rumors of Circe and Jaime but I don't know if you've confirmed them or not.

I REALLY REALLY REALLY hope that you can get Tricia Helfer to play Circe and Alexander Skaarsgaard to play Jaime. I cannot think of a more smoldering or perfect duo for those parts.

Casting
I'm re-reading A Game of Thrones for the first-time, GRRM. Nice work, dude....

Sean Bean...great choice, (He is 50...are the ages of the characters being 'adapted for television'? I would imagine so ('cuz Dany's 13 when Khal Drogo rides 'her as relentlessly as he rode his stallion.' Let me know if I need o make a donation to the George R.R. Martin Legal Defense Fund as a precaution)

I love Mark Addy as an actor, he was great in A Knights Tale (and the less-mentioned sitcom Still Standing)...but isn't he a little short for 'The Usurper'? I know casting is never easy, and it truly is a skill to see the right actor/actress for the right role. I'd always pictured John Huston or Oliver Reed as Baratheon...(but since they're dead...). I was hoping for Ed Quinn (From True Blood and he played 'Nathan Stark' in Eureka).

Regardless, good luck.

Fantastic
I was hoping from the day I saw Sean Bean at Winter is Coming that he'd be cast. This makes me doubly excited for the show, if that's even possible.

Excellent news :-)

As well as the obvious great casting of Bean, Lloyd is a great choice from his turn as Will Scarlett in ROBIN HOOD (the series wasn't great but him and the guy playing Guy of Gisbourne were pretty decent) and his guest role in DOCTOR WHO, not to mention Prince Rupert in THE DEVIL'S WHORE.

Mark Addy is an interesting choice, playing slightly against type as he normally does comic roles, but I've also seen him in some dramatic roles over the years. I think he'll do well.

Against type?
The King Robert in my head had a huge sense of humor with a big booming laugh. Mark Addy will be great.

Jack Gleeson
Missed one of two pages of comments that might've mentioned this, but:

Jack Gleesen was the blonde kid Katie Holmes-Cruise protected at the end of Batman Begins.

Harry Lloyd did the BBCs Robin Hood series as Will Scarlet. Needs a dye job, but otherwise looks properly douche-esque.

What a coincidence!! Only last night I dreamed that I had been randomly selected for a bit role in the pilot, even though I have absolutely no acting experience whatsoever. I was going to play the part of a guard who dies and had two lines. I was absolutely thrilled!

And now I wake up to the REAL news! What a great start to my day :)
