A Casting We Will Go

Spain
Well, Reuters has the story out already, so there's no longer any reason for me to keep mum. Yes, the rumors you've been seeing all over the web the last few days are true. Another huge piece has fallen into place for the HBO pilot of A GAME OF THRONES -- we have signed Sean Bean to play the part of Lord Eddard Stark.

For the movie fans out there, Sean Bean needs no introduction. I mean, what the hell, he was Boromir and he was Sharpe, he was terrific in both roles, and in a hundred other parts besides. I can't imagine a better Ned. The deal took some doing, so my fingers have been crossed for a month now (and boy, that made it hard to type), but now it's done, and I'm thrilled.

That's only part of the exciting news, however. Casting has been proceeding apace these past six weeks or so -- in New York and LA, London and Dublin, most recently in Australia. David and Dan and director Tom McCarthy have been looking all over the world for the right actors, and now they've filled some key roles as well.

For King Robert I Baratheon, we've got Mark Addy, a veteran British actor of stage and screen that many of you may remember from his fine turn in A KNIGHT'S TALE.

The roles of Joffrey Baratheon, the crown prince, and Viserys Targaryen, the beggar king, have also been filled... by Jack Gleeson and Harry Lloyd, respectively. Sorry, I haven't been able to find pictures of them on the internet yet, though I'm sure they are out there somewhere. I've seen readings by both Gleeson and Lloyd, and both should be terrific.

And last, but certainly not least, the role of the bastard Jon Snow will be played by a young actor named Kit Harington. You probably haven't heard of him yet... but you will, we're confident. David and Dan can't say enough about his talent and intensity.

Of course, there's a lot more roles still to fill, including some very crucial ones like the Lannister twins, the Stark children, and Daenerys Targaryen, so the search will continue for awhile. But we've begun, and so far I couldn't be happier. October is right around the corner.

Just FYI, not sure if anyone else has seen it but here's a pic of Harry Lloyd (at least the internets says so):

Wow.

Just wow.

This is really awesome.

Feels like this series will be really successful, and just the kind of adaptation we fans of the books would hope for.

Hope that this continues to be full of good news.

This series might be just as awesome as you are, GRRM.

More redundant happiness replying! I am an overall huge fan of Sean Bean. I loved Sharpe very much! This is a great choice.

I will also be ordering HBO to watch this series.

I'm so delighted with this news! It must have been really difficult for you to keep quiet (although maybe you're used to having to keep secrets from fans, safe in the knowledge that it'll be sweeter when the information is finally released after a long wait). I'll bet Seán Bean will be excellent, and the other actors all look great too. Huzzah! :-D

I first saw Sean Bean in Stormy Monday, and took to him right away. I haven't really been giving the casting much thinking, but this one seems obvious now that it is announced.

Robert...Mark Addy...? comon...
Im sorry, I think the guy is a good actor but in the role of an ex-warlord...giant of a man...womanizer...this dude cant be more than 5'10 with not a hint of former aesthetic glory. maybe he can act...but i think this casting was a huge miss. ugh...i know i cannot hope for a perfect image of whats im my head but shit...this guy is so far off the mark its really bothersome. Is it too late to think of other options...robert baratheon is large, intimidating, dangerous...this guy is like a teddy bear, please reconsider.

Sean Bean as Eddard is a simply phenomenal casting choice. Bean was awesome as Boromir, and I can already envision him as a perfect Ned. I'm now more excited than ever to see this production come to life!

Wow
Sean Bean?? Wow! That is so fantastic! His intensity should fit perfectly in the role, my only criticism is that he is too damn good looking! :p hahahahaha I'm getting so excited! I can't wait to see who they choose for Dany and Jaime!

Brilliant casting! Sean Bean is perfect and that kid has the essence of Jon, or something. Again, perfect.

gotta agree on the Mark Addy casting comments above...
not even close to what I had imagined. They'll have to do some seriously funky camera angles to make him seem imposing. Bean will have to act on his knees when those two are in frame together.
On to another casting topic, how's Maria Bello for Cersei? Could see her acting imperious and bitchy...

Bean is a great actor and will no doubt do a bang up job. But, I don't like him for the role. Would love to have seen him stretch his legs a bit as Jorah Mormont. Stark is such a boring role.

Addy was great in that Chris Rock film and pretty funny in that sit-com. I always pictured King Robert as not only a loud fat man, but a fat, brawny man with an edge. But, he is an established actor and perhaps he'll pull it off.

But, what do I know. I didn't like the woman who played Starbuck although in final season I thought she had her moments.

Wow, Sean Bean is an excellent choice! I thought Boromir was the best-acted member of the Fellowship.

This is so awesome. Much as I would love to see a Sean Bean film in which his character _doesn't_ die for once, I think he'll be a fantastic Ned.

I need to get an agent. I've decided I'd be the perfect Lysa. If I were a few years younger, I might say Sansa.

Everytime you bring up casting, I get more excited for this.

I submit to you that Tricia Helfer, recently "Six" on Battlestar Galactica, would make a perfect Cersei. http://tvbythenumbers.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/tricia-helfer-as-number-6-on-bsg.jpg

Sean Bean! When I was reading the series, for some reason, I always pictured Sean Bean as Ned. I am so happy and excited! I love him! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

One of my personal favorite casting ideas is Emily Browning for Dany. She's been on some dream casting lists, I think (Gemma Ward is someone I know is another favorite), but she would be so perfect for the role. She has the exactly sort of incredibly unconventional beauty that I think Dany has. You can't just cast a "regular" looking person to her part, IMO.

My husband described it as "weird Asian-hybrid beauty," haha.

Fun topic for discussion - who do you think will be easy to cast, and who do you think will be difficult?

Also, I wish Vinny Jones were a few years younger so that he could play The Hound. He fits the exact picture of the Hound in my head ever since I started reading the series, and I didn't even know who he was until I saw him suggested on a casting list and I went "That's HIM!"
