As Ser Jorah Mormont...

... we have Iain Glen, another distinguished British veteran of stage and screen.

Glen has a really great website at http://www.iainglen.com/ Check it out. Not only does he have a list of all his credits, but the site includes clips from many of the film and television roles, so you can get a wonderful sample of his range and talents. I wish more actors had websites this good.

One of his credits was KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, Ridley Scott's marvelous film about the Crusades and the fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem. Nicolaj Coster-Waldau also had a role in that film, hence the "gone to the wars" clue. But Coster-Waldau was not a kingslayer there, which was good for Glen, since he played Richard the Lionhearted. And killing Richard before his time would certainly have changed history. KINGDOM OF HEAVEN was filmed in Morocco... and Glen will be returning to those same locations to shoot the Pentos scenes for our pilot.

Iain Glen also appeared in MOUNTAINS OF THE MOON, co-starring as Speke to Patrick Bergin's Richard Burton. A wonderful performance in a fine film. Of course the character he will be playing in the HBO pilot, Ser Jorah Mormont, has never seen the Mountains of the Moon in Westeros, although the actor has seen the African version.

Like many of the best British actors, Iain Glen is a chameleon who often disappears into his roles. Visit his website and play some of his clips, and you may realize you have seen more of his work than you realize. He won't just play Ser Jorah, he'll BECOME him.

That's Ser Seven, and that's all folks.

For now.

Recent Casting
...I think every choice is spot on....

Great work, Grrm!

I am SO thrilled with the casting news. Sure, I don't know who half the actors are, but that they look close enough is half the selling. Of course, the only thing that will sustain is their ability...and I have no doubt, whatsoever, that these picks are cream of the crop. They certainly did choose well for those well-known faces!

Your icon is fantastic!

Come on!
Okay, I'm exited about this production also. BUT, I want the next book MORE. Tell it true-How long?

Really. Saying nothing of his doubtless talent...Mormont...The Bear of a man from Bear island comes across as a burly, bearded, fatherly type, in his middle ages, grizzled and tough, and looking absoultley (in my mind and the mind of evey other fan Ive debated it with) nothing! like this man. Can;t be too disapointed. He may be wonderful in the role...but really not even close in appearance. So far they have done so well casting charecters in the exact likeness I had in my imagination until this. Way off.

Here's to hoping there's a season 5! Seriously though, this is the most anticipated TV series for me...maybe ever...

"KINGDOM OF HEAVEN, Ridley Scott's marvelous film about the Crusades"

Kingdom of Heaven was a ham handed sham of a movie. I couldn't even finish it. Terrible acting, and one of the worst screenplays I've seen in the last year.

My expectation for the HBO series has now dropped significantly.

Tastes differ. I saw a terrific movie, and the director's cut is even better.

I was in a horrible mood after chipping a tooth and losing 1700 words of writing, I didn't think anything could cheer me up. That series of posts just did! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm sure Mr. Glen will play Mormont with distinction but am I the only one who shudders when I hear Kingdom of Heaven referred to as marvelous? I thought it was a muddled mess!

check out the Director's Cut of KOH. It's 1000 times better, and almost an entirely different movie than the theatrical cut.

Visit his website and play some of his clips, and you may realize you have seen more of his work than you realize.

You are absolutely right! Looking at the pictures you posted, I didn't realize who it was until I saw him clean shaven. He seems almost too handsome for how I pictured Jorah, but given his range, I'm sure you are right, he will become the character. Wow.

I agree with you on this! I've also seen the photos, clips and his CV and by the looks of it he seems to be a really versatile actor that has many faces.
I do think Ser Jorah's role fits perfectly in the roles he has had so far, many of them were the adventurous type of person.

I saw Iain Glen play Henry 5th in 1994 at the RSC. He was intense, charismatic actor then and I've no doubt he will make an amazing Mormont. Loving the cast so far!

Wow...excellent casting all around. Theon is the only one who really doesn't look like I had him pictured. No matter...as long as he can act. I look forward to this more and more with each casting post.

Connection to Catelyn
Cool connection -
Iain Glen was married to Susannah Harker who played Jane Bennet to Jennifer Ehle's Lizzy Bennet in the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice, and Jennifer Ehle will play Catelyn Stark.

Maybe GRRM reads a lot of Jane Austin?

The Hound
Oh please don't cast an old guy for the Hound, his scenes with Sansa are so romantic and erotic, I couldn't bear if it'd feel creepy all of a sudden.
Well, that's me making demands. LOL

Re: The Hound
Old guy? No, but... the Hound is still a whole lot older than Sansa, and was never written as attractive... you know, those hideous burns and all that... he's a lot more dangerous than he is romantic.

Iain Glen looks a bit young for Mormont, but aside from that they all seem great.

Am v excited at all the recent casting news, though this is rather disconnected from all that
Jeeeeeez. Can I just thank you for endorsing The Lies of Locke Lamora by Scott Lynch? I probably would have gotten around to it eventually, but when I saw your name on the cover I had to start reading it. Immediately. And by God, I'm a fan.

So (even though a certain scene will probably court nightmares for weeks to come), thank you again for helping to point me in this book's direction! Much appreciated. It's been ages since I found any author so nearly on par with you and Guy Kay :)
