October Already

The months never used to go by this fast.

Or the years. Gak. One more birthday and I'll be eligible for Social Security. That's bloody terrifying. It seems like only last week I was doing "new writer" panels at cons, scanning reviews to see if I was being mentioned as of the Young Turks of SF, and chasing after Parris (see avatar).

This should be a good month, though. The HBO pilot will start filming in just three more weeks or thereabouts. This time next month I will be in Belfast, visiting the shoot. And maybe seeing some scenery like this:

(That's actually one of my favorites of Michael Komarck's calendar art, fwiw. I had hoped by this time to be able to announce the publisher and artist for the 2011 calendar, but we're still waiting on the contracts. Soon, I hope).

Bah! There was no chasing. That was a fair exchange of goods! You're just lucky Joe didn't charge you any interest on those goats. :)

That really is a beautiful painting, amazing colors. I hope we'll see Komarck turn his hand to ASoIaF again some time in the future -- not in a calendar again, maybe, but a new art book or print series or something.

I'm thinking HBO should call on him (and Ted Nasmith whilst they're at it) to help out with the art design side of things for them, like Peter Jackson got Alan Lee and John Howe to do LotR. Awesome stuff.

Enjoy Belfast, it's a lovely city. Be sure to visit the Crown Bar whilst you're there! It's rather fantastic ;)

I agree that is a wonderful piece of artwork by Michael Komarck.
I am looking forward to seeing you and Parris next month ... and to finding out what you think of our wee City.

Scenery
I did some searching and came up with these:
Dunluce Castle http://www.ni-environment.gov.uk/places_to_visit_home/historic-monuments/dunluce.htm?vt=2
Trim http://www.meath.ie/Tourism/Heritage/HeritageSites/TrimCastle/
and a big mansion named Tullynally http://www.tullynallycastle.com/

I hope you have scheduled lots of time to sight see. Wish I were going too.

Oh, and the neolithic stuff too http://www.meath.ie/Tourism/Heritage/HeritageSites/LoughcrewCairns/

Maybe you'd like to sleep in one http://www.celticcastles.com/map_ireland.asp

I've been thinking about going to Ireland for ages. I think you just sealed it for me with those pictures! Lovely.

I would LOVE to see a larger version of that avatar pic if you get a chance. Just the little I could see made me grin.

Archon is this weekend. The Holiday Inn defaulted and the city of Collinsville owned it for a little while. Doubletree bought it just before last year's con and they weren't too fond of the Archon crowd. This year there are no con activities at the hotel. Most people think it's going to be pretty dead...

So they moved it for next year! I hear they break in the new venues pretty good, so I'm excited. It will be my first non-Collinsville Archon. I'm a newb. Not like my 25 year old friend who will be attending her 26th Archon. If you count the one she attended in vitro.

Mostly, just trying to entice you to come next year. I've gotten a lot of friend's into your writing since the last Archon you attended.

I'm so excited you are going to be in the UK - we need more of you here. Did you say there will be book signings and things at some point? *crosses fingers, looks hopeful*

The version of this picture in the calendar is much, much darker than the jpeg you linked too. Was that intentional in the printing?

That is a really gorgeous painting! I had to squint very hard at it to see if it wasn't a photo (I was kind of wishing it was, because then it would be somewhere I could visit :P ).
