HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Oh. My. God.
This is the best news I've heard all year.

... well, last year too.

I almost wish I didn't know, the wait would have been so much easier if I didn't. :P

Dear GRRM:
You are my hero, for a number of reasons. I'm so pleased that they have chosen to honor your SOIAF series, and I can only hope that they do your writing justice!!

I saw this on Comingsoon.net this morning and did a happy dance. Due to the books' deep complexity and ever-expanding cast I never thought the series would ever see any screen.

O ye of little faith, eh?

I think this will also draw a totally new audience to HBO as well as a new audience to your books.

Congratulations, and best of luck to you, sir.

Congratulations!
I heard this morning before I hopped in the shower for work. That's so exciting! I can't wait :) And to think, I was considering having my HBO turned off because there's never much on any of the seven different HBOs I get that I haven't watched. Well, I know I will keep the hobo now!

Congratulations, George! You must be flying!

Congratulations! I'm in complete agreement that an HBO show is the best possible way to adapt the novels into moving pictures.

Being a selfish bastard who is still more interested in the yet to be written books than in their adaptations, I still have to wonder about two things. The one question is obviously how much of GRRMs valuable time is going to be spent on his involvement with the TV show. But I was also wondering if the remaining novels might actually turn out different, now that their author knows that they'll (probably) going to be adapted into a script...? I guess nobody's able to answer this at this point, I'm just thinking aloud...

Anyway, even though I'm more looking forward to further novels than to the show, it's going to be an exciting time for fans of ASOIAF, and if everything works out, HBO might have a future TV classic on their hands.

Congratulations!
I couldn't think of a better way to make a version we can watch!

With all due respect, though, it's no longer early January...

Yay!
Congratulations and Thank You! I happily already subscribe to HBO and am a huge fan of The Wire and Big Love (not mentioned on your list, but a worthy addition). I will be eagerly awaiting the debut of A Song of Ice and Fire. The plan to cover each novel in a season arc is excellent. It will be a lot of fun to see who is cast as each character. I would love to see a bunch of relative unknowns that we can become immersed in as the characters right away, rather than having to shake off visions of previous roles.

I know you must be bursting with excitement over the project as well as wondering what the heck you've gotten yourself into now. It might be a lot like home remodeling.

Best of luck with all your work and have a great time on your pizza crawl. If you're ever in Ohio, be sure to give Donato's a try. It's not NY pie, by any stretch of the imagination, but it's also a far cry from bread casserole.

Re: Yay!
I live in Ohio too. Donato's sucks. There are one or two local places that are O.K., but none of the chains. Avoid anything in Ohio saying 'pepperoni,' which seems to be a popular local emetic.

YEEEEEES! I knew it! I felt it in my old, creaky bones.

Congratulations! I wish you and HBO the best of luck in this. I do hope HBO shows this in the Philippines, but if not, ah, thank God for US-based relatives and uh, other sources.

Would somebody please pinch me? Or better yet don't, if this is a dream I don't want to wake up. Fantastic news to say the least.

I normally wouldn't post to your not-a-blog or on a message board or anything but this is just too awesome for me not to send some congratulations. Once this gets made (there is no if in my mind) I'm subscribing to HBO and I'm more than willing to write to them and encourage them to produce ASoIaF with all the resources possible. Don't know if fan mail to studios does much but I'll do my part if it does. I can't wait to see Westeros with my own two eyes.
