Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

I am just about the happiest person alive right now... save for how you must be feeling. No one deserves it more. I've dreamed of seeing your books in film form ever since I started reading them-- but I always thought that there is not way it could be cut down into just a few hours. That wouldn't do it justice. A miniseries, a tv series, something with enough time to tell the whole story.

OMG. I am so ecstatic right now I could weep. I am thrilled for you, your family and your fans. This is amazing news.

How exciting! I will have to look for more news on this... like when it's airing...

Delurking to say: I hope, hope, hope that this will be shown on UK tv! Naturally, any filmed version won't match the books for gloriousness (the pictures are better inside one's head) but this should make sure that loads more people buy and read the books. Which is a Good Thing. Squeee! Ahem! (One should not squeee! like a fangirl when one is *cough* middle-aged.)

*Pours a virtual glass of champers to toast your success before re-lurking*

I've long thought this the ONLY way that this story could ever work on a screen, and never thought I would see the day!

I'm thinking this might be a reason to subscribe...

This is the best news I've heard all day! Everytime my friends and I discuss about turning aSoIaF into a movie, I always say it should either be the Sci-fi Channel (unlikely since it's not Sci-fi, plus we don't get this channel here), or HBO. And now it's finally happening!

Excellent news.
Very cool.

Thank you for all your hard work over the years. Good luck and happy writing. :-)

GRRM YOU ARE THE MAN! I even forgive you for killing robb stark. a least a little bit. or not. but the point is, nice work on the HBO deal. now all i have to do is force the parental units to shell out the dough for HBO. which wont happen- but i will buy them on dvd and probably watch them until my eyes disintegrate, similar to what happened while reading your novels. today has been a good day as far as me enjoying your work- the news about HBO, plus the fact that i received The Art of ASOIAF, Hedge Knight, Dark Visions, and A Song for Lya and Other Stories via amazon.com. Hedge Knight was the first graphic novel i have read, and i must say that i enjoyed it immensely. although i obviously understand that you do your work more for your own enjoyment than for the benefit of your readers, all (most) of us sincerely appreciate your efforts.

HBO deal - schweeet
For those of us who are fans, both of HBO's quality programing and your work; this is exciting news. I would rank it up there in the same caliber of news that hit the net when Tolkiens Lord of the Rings trilogy was first announced.

I have always been so proud of the fact that I don't have pay channels and such, because I never watch network television. Now I have to get HBO. Thanks a lot. Next thing you'll see is me with pasty white skin, myopic eyes from staring at plasma from 18 inches away drooling and saying, "I love you Dany." You have doomed me to the loss of most of my friends and all of my hard learned talents that take place away from the small screen.... probably my job too. Writing the books that I have called in sick for wasn't enough. Now this. I thought we were.... we were like this.

Now hurry up and git 'er done so I can get my watchin' on.

I already have HBO, so I'm golden. I sure hope they do you credit. But given their other current series, there's certainly promise. Congratulations!

please don't dissapoint...good luck!

I hope we get this here! And also that what happened to Rome here doesn't happen to ASOIAF. Rome was pulled after a couple of episodes, then put back on late at night >_>
