Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Congratulations! I'm really excited and looking forward to see this show on TV.
I just hope they won't cancel the show in the middle of the series, like what they did to Carnivale.

I want in!
Damn, I hope there are open auditions, and that I know about it. If the series is anything like the books, there will be about 100 minor roles...I'd do anything for a part in this...

::dances ecstatically::

Oh my god...congratulations, Mr. Martin! This is great! I will definitely be subscribing to HBO. :) Can't wait to see how it's done.

That is so perfect! HBO does fantastic stuff, Rome and Big Love being among the best. That is so frickin' awesome. My bro is gonna die!

This is totally FANTASTIC!!! I just read about it on digg.
I am also very hopeful that HBO is going to do a great job with staying true to the original story.

Oh, I almost forgot - GRRM, YOU ROCK!

OH MY GOODNESS! This is seriously amazing news! I am sure I am just echoing the other 200+ comments that I did not bother to read, but congrats and thank you!!!! And thanks, HBO! I can't believe it; my boyfriend and I were just saying the other day how this book needed to be a tv series and we didn't think it would ever happen! Yaaaay!!!

Three words.

That's. Fucking. Awesome.

Please, please, please.... can you post when they are doing casting, how it's happening....

I'll send every head shot I've ever taken, I'll update my resume, just please, let me be a nameless cook!!!!!

This is just amazing! But they absolutely need Joss Whedon for screenplay writing.
Oh, I remember that Earthsea crap SciFi has made... and hope HBO won't screw up...
Jan. 23rd, 2007 05:35 am (UTC)
You must be kidding?!? Don't get me wrong Joss Whedon is awesome but his sense of humor is so completely unlike the style of aSoIaF it's mind-boggling. Such a show would be some kind of horrible chimera not fit for the light of day!

"Series of Ice & Fire"
Congratulations. Very exciting news.
If they can take the essense of the work done on ROME, CARNIVALE & DEADWOOD (and I know it's not an HBO show ... but include some of the gritty emotional component of BSG) ... and apply it to your work it will be breathtaking.

The variety article mentions that you will only be penning one episode? I assume you will have much more involvement than this would suggest?

Regarding the filming location ... go for New Zealand (My being a Kiwi in no way colours my judgement :-) ).
Go all out and give the SFX to Weta ... use the 'massive' engine for your battle scenes.

Fingers crossed for a high quality product (your work deserves it).

Best Regards,

I agree. But me being a kiwi _definitely_ colours my judgment. ;)
I think it would be neat to have Weta do the special effects. It might put a strain on the budget though...
