HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Wow, I don't know what to say. I'm so excited. George, do yourself (and us) a favor and make sure Tyion gets a good actor. The midget from this latest season of Nip / Tuck should suffice.

yeah, he would be badass. only die his hair. Niptuck is good, and i thought the midget was skilled at his job.

I actually got chills reading this news...hell, I STILL have chills. Unbelievable news!!! Doing handstands in my office. Now I just gotta get HBO... And George: I can't make the New Haven Pizza crawl, but I'm all for making a NYC Pizza crawl with ya when you get here.

;-)

YEEEEHAW
This is really good news! I hope it works out.

Yeah, I know you don't want casting suggestions but Kevin McKidd, who plays Lucius Vorenus in Rome would make a great Dondarrion.

I hope the TV show does not hinder your ability to finish the books remaining in Song of Ice and Fire, as I prefer to read instead of watch TV...and I think it is impossible to capture all the splendor in your books.

Ehi Zio Giorgio, remember your trip in Lucca 2005?

We were talking about this that evening at the dinner (along with your story about italian ancestors). Are they shooting in Europe? What if someone wanted to take a shot and try to be selected for casting? :)
Ciao.

I was really hoping that the "Good News" was that you're done with Dance With Dragons and that it is being released soon.

YES! HBO is awesome. I am a subscriber and was thinking of cancelling.. not a chance now. YES! YES! YES! Please, please let them stay as close to the story as possible. I can't believe this. Mr. Martin, give whoever made this possible a raise. I can't wait. I really really can't wait.

DUDE! I have so often dreamed of how these novels might be adapted for movies but knew they could never be done justice. This is such a fabulous idea. If I weren't already planning to get digital cable when I move into my new house, I'd be doing it now. If anyone were ever going do to a successful filmed version of these books, it's HBO. I can't wait!

Re: Quite a blessing!
What are you doing on the internet??? Finish book 3, at least, so you don't run into spoilers!

It's not TV, it's HBO
I have to say that I am pretty fired up for this project George. Congrats. HBO does do a great job with their current shows and I am sure they will put the same effort forth for Song. Assuming they hold true to the stories for the most part, special effects will be the real key, especially when it comes to fantasy. Is Ray HarryHausen still around?

Anyway, having had pizza in both towns - New York and Chicago - Chicago thin is just as good or better than NY style, it is just cut differently. We do have both styles here, thin and deep, and we do both very well. They seem to use better meats in Chicago. Good luck with New Haven slices, I'm sure you will let us know the verdict.

Go Bears!
