HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Can you reveal any details on how the first episode is going to open up?
How is the show going to introduce us to your world?

Congratulations. I too am looking forward to this project.

But I would like to offer a word of advice: Take the money and run. Don't get involved in the actual production of this thing. It will steal your life. Inevitably, the end product will not live up to many, if not most, people's anticipation. There will be many, many compromises that you, as the creator, should not have to involve yourself in.

On a related note: you would do yourself a favor to get as much of the book worked out as possible before the adaptation gets done. Try to remember what happenned to John LeCarre after Alec Guiness played George Smiley. He said he could never write the character again. I'm afraid that happens more often than authors are willing to admit. (And I'm not just saying you should push to the end because I'd like to get to the books faster. It's more that the adaptations themselves may pose a threat to your writing.)

As for casting, if asked, I think you should insist that Kirmet the Frog plays Jon Snow, and Miss Piggy is Danaerys (sp?). In other words, forget about getting involved in the project. (Also, I think a muppets casting always helps to clarify the situation for any of these sorts of things, and its so much more helpful than trying to decide between hollywood's pretty boys and girls of the month.)

Anyways, its great news for you, and I sincerely am looking forward to seeing how the HBO people botch the job.

There have been successful TV adaptations...
But by far my favorite was the TV version of Larry McMurty's Lonesome Dove. I can be done, and done well. Crossing my fingers here.

I'll congratulate you here then. ^_^ I'm Gottis, a fan from Sweden, and I just hope the series will make it all the way across the Atlantic... :/

"With twelve hours to devote to each of the novels..."
Or how about maybe 20? Or 18? Or 16? or 14? 12 hours seems a bit short for a full season.

Happy as happy could be!!!!
Ok. Congrats and blah! So. Let me get this straight. If this were to be a great tv series where each season is a book. Then we are talking about seven seasons, right? Seven. I hope you get someone like peter jackson who can manipulate and master the settings, the people. You will have to get some girls that will grow up with the series as well. This would have to be a LONG HAUL of a show. Seven or eight years devoted?

I know people are saying to you "dont get that involved" but I think you should. This is going to be AMAZING!!! Oh, and one thing. Dont overdo it with the CGI. Please?

I think HBO is the only network that could actually do this series justice.

HBO Series
Just a couple weeks ago I mentioned to my sister that it would be cool if this were to happen! I love HBO shows! ROME is great! But you forgot to mention INSIDE THE NFL. Though it was better when they showed highlights from all the games. Too many fluff pieces this year.

I am wondering though when you are going to change the A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE sample. Though I love Tyrion I would like to read about someone else too.
