HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

I know the names are too big budget, but a bunch of us over at the Song of Ice and Fire board have been casting the movie/miniseries for awhile now. I made a site to show the ideas we have and I figured it couldn't hurt to link it here. Just in case you wanted to use one of them. :P

And again, this is awesome news!

That list is fun - lists like that are always kind of silly, but there are a few I'd love to see. The one for Melisandre though... that is freaking hilarious, with the "Complete Moisture Plus" caption.

A very warm congratulations, George! I am sure everyone knows that speculation for casting, at this point, is ridiculously premature...but hey, we're human.

innenwelt, you read xkdc! :D

Congrats, George... I know it's going to be a *while* before you even start casting this, but it's hard not to get excited about the whole thing!

Wow! That's the best news I've heard all day! Looks like I'm going to have to call DirecTv to cancel the Starz package and get the HBO package!

Awesome, AMAZING news.

I'm from Germany, so it'll probably be ages until I get to see it, but I'm looking forward to this loads and loads and LOADS. :)

George, people have been discussing casting for the series since time eternal (well, you know what I mean) :) Now that they have a legitimate excuse to, the preverbial floodgates are open. It's all talk, blitherdy blather, a place to let off some of the excitement. Of course it's premature. It's been premature all along! :D

I still like Patrick Stewart for Syrio Forel, though compelling arguments have been made for casting him as Tywin Lannister.

It's going to be rough casting Cersei and Jaime, I think -- near-supernatural beauty, nearly identical, and the ability to perform in roles that have a lot of subtlety. Any two of those would be a tall order.

Maybe Lauren Ambrose as Ygritte.

Ooh! Christina Hendricks as Melisandre (she did a great job of being seductively vicious on Firefly, I thought).

And though in my head John Rhys-Davies has always been Robert Baratheon, I think it's John Rhys-Davies of about 20 years ago.

And now, having prattled on to no real good end, I stop.

Utterly awesome. And amusing that, back when you hinted at big news, someone wondered if it was precisely this -- HBO, specifically, picking up the option with the intent of making a mult-season show. This is really the only way the story can be told without cutting it to shreds, either due to time constraints or because of the need to flinch away from the blood and sex.

Stellar news. This has the potential of being one of the best things to ever appear on television.
