HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

congrats!
I heard the news on TechTV yesterday and am sooooooooooo excited. I have followed most of the HBO shows, and Rome, The Wire, Sopranos, and 6 Feet Under are the BEST on television. And I know they will do your creation justice. Perhaps, far beyond expectation as well. OMG!!! I can't believe it and really I wish you all the best. I can't wait to see the casting! I know it's a long ways away but I'm a patient girl. Just a refresher, I met you at a book signing in San Francisco, and here's the picture we took.

Hugs, Susan

Excellent
This is absolutely wonderful news. It couldnt have happened more perfectly - with the HBO series. Ive been a fan of you wonderful books since 2005 and just cant get enough. Recently purchase Dreamsongs which looks like it will be a good read.

I think here on Oz we'll have to wait for the DVD. When are you coming to Australia Mr Martin?? If you ever do - let your Oz fans know and perhaps you can try a Pizza crawl here.

The great thing about the casting is that you can get big names for the small roles as big stars probably wont commit to more than one season or a hanful of episodes. While the key roles should be filled with lesser knowns who wont bring baggage with them.

All the best George and hopefully we will see Dance of Dragons soon!! :)

BTW - Susan - great to see a really cute GRRM fan :)

casting...
Hello Mr R.R. Martin,

I'm a long time fan of the books. I've read all the available novels at least 5 times each. We (as a reading community) have long anticipated a jump from page to screen for this series, especially considering your back ground. My question to you about this is (I'm sure many are thinking the same) will there be an open casting call? Or some reality show to get a role on this coveted epic? I sure would love a chance to win one of these roles!

not what I was hoping for
Well it's good news (sigh)... I guess… Except, well I was really hoping you would be announcing that ADWD was finished... Now there is just one more thing to pull you away from writing. I hope you don't end up finishing the series on TV and not writing the last 3 or 4 books, because that is my new greatest fear.

But congratulations to you too!!

That is the most irrational fear I've ever heard of.

с моим знанием иностранных языков я совсем не знаю о чем идет речь ) но из-за того что встретилось знакомое название любмой книги, подозреваю что тут обсуждается как продвигается создание этого произведения. ждем)
