HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

A massive congrads on your reincursion into Hollywood
Congratulations!

Sapranos = Cheesy Suberban Mafia
Deadwood = ???
Song of Ice and Fire = Genius!!!

I am trying to figure out how they will be incorperating the Sex Organ scenes but we probably don't really need to get too pornographic. I am sure the visuals of Pia getting humped from behind, viewed from the front, by an army would be enough. Probably show her with pubic hair then sans hair, but no shaving process, but the shaving wouldn't be a big deal I think, Haha.

They really have to make sure they get all the massive for-shadowing and pre-shadowing that you throw in like every paragraph or even word, grrm. That's very unique to your storytelling.

So, for you, seeing a "sex organ" = pornographic?

I am sad for you...

Do me a favor and look up "pornographic" in a dictionary. It doesn't mean what you think it means...

Corporate shmedling???
I can probably agree somewhat with this last anon comment.
GRRM did complain about how Hollywood would neuter his ideas because of certain types of establishment censorship, That's why I stick to Internet TV for now. Free and I can comment on shows to tell them off.
HBO. Eeaaaash, I am sure Deadwood is probably good but I haven't seen it. I don't really think the Saprooooooonos is that great and kinda unrealistic or definitely anti Italian-American at least. It just sounds like stupid people that murder because there so dumb to me, but maybe someone will force me to watch an episode one day and I'll change my mind. My dad likes it.
I dunno, I think allot of people would want to see a classic series finished before all the hype of a Hollywooded potential water-down. Especially with this type of material. Maybe finish it first an start production in 6 years.
People might watch HBO, which is mainly R rated on top of the cooperate shmedling, and then they might demand a more politically correct book.
But I could be wrong of course. I have open ears.

Screenwriters are key!!!
HBO = perfect setting, great decision

Writer for the movie Halo = I hope he's better than that sounds!

Seriously, nothing killed the new star wars more than ridiculously poor scripts (even LOTR suffered some of this in movies 2 and 3). I hope the scripts don't fail the books.

lol! wow, people trying to tell George how to cast the movie! now that's hilarious and pathetic.

personally, i hope for and expect a cast of relative unknowns. no tom cruise, kate winslet, catherine zeta-jones, or viggo mortenson for me please. god no, people! don't be silly.

Great News
Wow. Congratulations on the deal. With HBO, hopefully your vision will be more faithfully adapted. On an utterly related note, while Gang Green and Big Blue may be out of the post season, adios to the Patriots. Hope you had time to watch in the midst of your busy schedule.

YES YES YES YES!!!!!!!!!
This made me yell out loud! Could you write Titus Pulo into your next book?

Congratulations! This will be one of the best series to ever hit TV. HBO does not play around.

Congrats on the great news. I'm looking forward to seeing if it's anything like I imagined! If you have any info on auditions for roles that would be great too!!! Again congrats I hope it turns out to be everything you've imagined.

best show
Sorry...Rome? To each his own I guess, or you haven't ever watched Galactica. That IS the best show on television, even if it is on the scifi channel and not HBO.

Re: best show
BSG is a great show. However, it is a tad melodramatic and doesn't hold a torch to the quality of HBO original series.

Congratulations!
Damn you! Now I have to get HBO. I was just fine never subscribing--never knowing what I was missing, happily oblivious, but now I know what I'll be missing and I just can't do it.

Grrr. Fine, but as soon as the show is kaput, HBO is GONE! And I refuse to get it until the series begins. ;P

Anyway, my lost $50/month (or whatever a subscription costs these days) is wonderful news for you and all the fans (including me). Congratulations. Exciting! I can't wait to see who is cast--especially for Dany and Jon Snow. Please keep us posted.

Re: New sample chapter PLEASE?
He isn't going to. He doesn't want to give too much of the book away.
