Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Words cannot describe how excited I am. Well, excited and sad that I don't have HBO. ;_;

If you're ever in need of a young Tully female or the 3rd-Red-Priestess-from-the-left, I'll be more than happy to drop everything and quit my job and sell everything I own for 1.84 seconds of screentime. Hell, as long as I'm on the actual set, I don't even care if I get edited out. XD

I had hoped the honor would have been mine.
Wondering about the subject heading? For the longest time I've been building my knowledge of storytelling and film making. In my dreams of becoming a director I've fantasied about spearheading ASOIAF. A dream I've had for a long time and hoped to achieve with determination and force of will. My group of friends and I came to the same conclusion, an HBO series is the only way to give the story the time and attention to detail it deserves. Feature films would need to be done in at least six parts, one for each book. A television series, Heroes for example, would be dulled and restricted due to TV regulations. And after watching Rome and Deadwood I'm confident in HBO's ability to produce quality programs, but those shows weren't taken from a previously existing source as far as i know. Frank Miller's 300 will be the first adaptation in this generation of programming and will hone there collective talents. I only hope the minds behind ASOIAF don't try to make any "creative" changes without consulting Martin himself. Meanwhile, I'll have to sit back enjoy WATCHING A Game of Thrones come to life in season one.

Any idea who will be involved in casting the series?

I am so freaking excited about this!!! I've always thought a big screen movie wouldn't be able to give the characters time to grow and develop and a TV series CAN do that. I was about to cancel cable but now it looks like I'll be keeping it and subscribing to HBO soon. It's going to be so fantastic!! YIPPY!! *happy dance* bye

Thank you Uncle Martin!
Well, considering that Doctor Who and Song of Ice and Fire are the only things keeping me and my girlfriend's stale relationship together, let me just inform you that this piece of jolly news got us so excited that she actually had sex with me again last night...thank you Uncle Martin

Can't wait for the DVDs
Or whatever format is available in 2010. I don't think I'll sign up for HBO, but I will buy the series when it hits my Best Buy shelf.

I am sure there much be a great deal of satisfaction with this accomplishment. But I am sure that lasted about 10 minutes. I remember the email I sent Peter Jackson when the lord of the rings website was launched - remember that you are working on a project who's intellectual property is owned by J.R. Tolkin's estate, but embraced by generations. Please do not make hobbits look like ewok's. I am sure with keeping a hand in the process will ensure that Tyrone will be represented in the spirit he was created in. He is a unique creation

My only worry
You know this already but, HBO is the ONLY place that can do Ice and Fire justice. My only worry is that HBO will dump it after 2 or 3 seasons for expense reasons, like Carnivale and Deadwood. Carnivale was great, excellent acting, writing, and all-round production. At least with Deadwood they will give us some closure of the show, and not leave everyone with a cliffhanger FOREVER like Carnivale. I recently heard that ROME will be finished after 3 seasons, though that is what they had planned for.

Best of Luck with ADWD and everything else you do.
Thank you.Thank you.Thank you.Thank you.Thank you.Thank you for everything

We've talked about it, dreamt about it, but seeing it done...
I got the news today, and I'm still almost too excited to write anything coherent... but I'll give it a try. The guys and I have talked and dreamed about what books and tales we would like seeing made into movies or series, and this was at the top of the list many a time. Upon hearing the news that it actually WILL be made into a series, we almost couldn't believe it... and from the network behind deadwood, rome, band of brothers and so many of our favorite series... Jesus Christ of America! To good to be true! I would have to start writing poetry at this point to be able to express myself in words! Congratulations, and the best of wishes to the ones responsible for this series!
