HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

We've talked about it, dreamt about it, but seeing it done...
I got the news today, and I'm still almost too excited to write anything coherent... but I'll give it a try. The guys and I have talked and dreamed about what books and tales we would like seeing made into movies or series, and this was at the top of the list many a time. Upon hearing the news that it actually WILL be made into a series, we almost couldn't believe it... and from the network behind deadwood, rome, band of brothers and so many of our favorite series... Jesus Christ of America! To good to be true! I would have to start writing poetry at this point to be able to express myself in words! Congratulations, and the best of wishes to the ones responsible for this series!

Holy Crap!
On the one hand, this makes so much sense, it's breathtaking that it's actually happening. On the down side... well crap, I've known about this for 10 minutes now and I can't stand not knowing a million unknowable details, who will play Jon Snow? Will they follow the frustrating Hollywood trend of casting 25 year old hunks to play teenage parts? When will production start? When will the scripts be written? WHEN WILL IT BE ON TV? Ye gods man. Have mercy and tell us something. Even if you have to make it up. I must have more!

Half a Dream Come True
I just wanted to say that your book series is easily my favorite of all time. A year ago me and my bro were talking about 'dream projects' and the first I named was A Song of Ice and Fire for HBO mini-series (after seeing how well they handled Rome).

Well, that's half of the dream come true right there.

The other half will be if I can get a role in it. As an actor it would be an honor to portray one of your amazing characters, if only for an episode. And you can bet I'll be working my ass off to score at least an audition. And if I actually do get a role? Well I would die happy... just as soon as my arc was completed of course.

Update
Hi George,

Been purusing your blog and the update link but you've yet to give us an update on A Dance with Dragons. Plan to update us anytime soon?

Good news on the HBO gig. I'm going to subscribe with them just because of that. It'll be shot in HDTV, correct?

My college aged son and I love the books and can't wait for more!!

HBO - Song of Fire & Ice
Does the mean maybe the F&I series will be finished in this decade? Whoops, it's already 2007 at the rate it's progressing that would be TOO optomistic! Maybe by 2020? My grandkids can read it then!

I'm sorry, but I'm getting completely fed up with the delays. Mr. Martin you're a terrific writer, but I am so sorry I started this series only to be left hanging out to dry. A Game of Thrones was released 10 years ago and there are still 2 or 3 books left as I understand it. At the rate the past few books have been published, 2020 is probably optimistic. Completely unacceptable.

HBO, here I come
I&F coming to HBO, and another novel around the corner. The next two years are going to be filled with I&F goodness. Can it get any better? Wait it can. I'm down under in Sydney for a job for the next two years...and have friends who live on the South Island of NZ. George: tell me when the filming begins! I'm coming over to be an extra...I know you're crew is going to NZ, the UK currency is twice the US currency, while NZ's is 2/3s the US currency. You guys would be drunk or brain-dead to film in the UK, you'll save huge amounts of money. Yeah, you're going to NZ, so please, tell me where I line up for a spot as an extra. Cheers to your success!

HBO!
I just wanted to thank you for doing this right. I always thought that the only way your story could be done right is if HBO picked it up. and Voila!
You are the best.

Congrats
I can't tell you how pleased I am for not only you but for all of us readers. I agree with the fact that HBO is the best choice for a television home of Fire & Ice. I am a huge fan of The Sopranos and probably would be a fan of Deadwood and Rome but still havent subscribed. I think Fire and Ice is the breaking point for me. I am calling the cable company.
Also off the subject I wanted to recommend a great football book to a big football fan. Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer by Warren St. John is a great read and the most accurate look into SEC college football that I have ever read. I don't know if you have ever had the oppurtunity to visit an SEC campus on a fall Saturday but if not I would recommend adding that to your list of things to do before you die.

Keep writing and I will keep reading.
Best of luck

Sincerely,

All I can say is HBO is the only channel who could do anything with this series so I am absolutely thrilled! Hopefully I don't explode into a bajillion pieces before it airs.
