Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

deal about a tv seria
i addmit that i had that idea while i was still reading the first book, but i quickly backed of because tv might make a different vision then the one in my head, not to mention the possibility of cripoling it and altering a book that was perfect for the brother publick.i think it is remarcably courageous of you to go throw with this.all in all you have my support cause i think you know what`re doing as you have till now.best wishes

Peter Dinklage
It was recently announced that Mr. Dinklage has signed on to play "Trumpkin" in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Caspian Prince. Shooting of this film should be complete long before Ice & Fire would begin. However, his signing on to this project may complicate things in that he may shy away from this project in order to avoid being typecast.

Re: Peter Dinklage
I think this is primarily good news. We know, now, that Peter is not averse to high fantasy. And as for being typecast, do you think he's really concerned about being typecast as a dwarf? Anyway, apart from stature, Tyrion and Trumpkin have absolutely nothing in common. The bad news about his being cast as Trumpkin is that it demonstrates how high Peter Dinklage's profile, (and presumably, salary) have risen. Good for him, of course, but HBO may not be able to afford to pay him A-list hollywood actor wages for 7 years. Still, I have friends in the New York theater who know Peter and I am begging them to try to sell him on the idea of playing Tyrion. Hopefully my vicarious begging will help.

Congrats Ser George! and just think...
...you realize the millions of dollars HBO would save by hiring all of us,your loyal fanbase,to work on "ASOIAF?" :) if there is any hope of any of us working on it as production assistants, grips, gaffers, caterers, extras, etc, please let us know... please have unknowns in the cast...except for the Viper, i think the Viper should be played by that yummy actor who is Marc Antony in HBO's "Rome" ;D

please do not have "ASOIAF" end up like Peter Jackson's "Rings" [i am thankful that "Rings" exists and i've bought the "Rings" dvds because i appreciate Jackson finishing "Rings" (remember Bashki's unfinished "Rings?")]...please have control over "ASOIAF"
do not compromise... i don't want to have to be glad that "ASOIAF" is made...i want to be able to enjoy it and say that it was as good as the books...i don't expect a carbon copy or clone, but i don't want to go thru with Jon Snow and etc, like i did with Faramir and etc, ...i'm being selfish, but i think that any translation of a work should be respectful of its original author!

Ravenneous for pizza, but won't be there,
Lady Snow

That's good news
That's good news, though I don't know how you'll have time to finish the books and write a TV series. Would have been nice if the series was finished first.

HBO has alot of good shows, but FX's The Shield is a much better show than the Sopranos has become. They were equal in the beginning, but where The Shield has continually raised the stakes, The Sopranos becaume boring and didn't resolve certain character's fates in an interesting manner such Furio and the crazy Russian Chris and Paulie lost in the forest.

The Wire is a great show. I hope it finishes stronger than the Sopranos did. But I'd put The Shield on par with any show on HBO.

Re: That's good news
You obviously have not read Mr. Martins entire entry. He is only writing one episode a season.

HBO works for this series for more than just the fact that the quality of their shows are superior to most other networks.
1. HBO has no commercials. This means that each one hour episode episode is actually one hour. This makes it more likely that one entire season can truly cover one whole book.

2. HBO is a subscription channel & as such doesn't face the same level of scrutiny from censors as most other networks (ex. the gore of Rome, the language of Sopranos, etc). The Red Wedding would probably never be allowed to air on the so called "Big Three" (now Big Four I guess)or most regular cable channels.

Just adding my voice to the masses. It would seem HBO has a whole lot of people holding their breaths for this one. Now all they have to do is not screw it up. I'll stay optomistic.

Great news!Well done George! Incidentally, I am a professional actor, albeit based in the UK. Chances of landing a role...?
Surely the characters have to have english accents? American accents in medieval style settings is going to be cringeworthy.

Am I going to be able to audition for any of the major roles in the series.

Brave stuff! Sounds impressive.

I'm pretty sure it would have to of been mentioned several times on here... but as an indie film actor and part time writer who loves nothing more than my struggling lifestyle.

I pray for open auditions on this one and that I somehow hear about them.

I'm absolutely in love with your work and being able to be a part of it would be a highlight of my life.

Not sure if this has been asked yet b/c there are so many comments, but is there a chance for this on DVD after it's aired. I'm tight on money and have no cable right now, but I'd sure as hell buy it later when I'm more wealthy. :)
