HBO Options A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE

Yes, it's true.

Yes, this is the Big News that I have been hinting at.

No, the Big News was not the pizza crawl, or the delivery of the new WILD CARDS book, though of course I'm excited about those as well.

VARIETY broke the story this morning. Instead of rehashing what they said, let me just point all of you toward:

http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117957532.html?categoryid=14&cs=1

I've already gotten close to a hundred emails this morning, just off the VARIETY article. I expect that number will have swollen to several hundred before the day is out. I appreciate all the good wishes and congratulations, but I am NOT going to be able to respond to all of you individually.

I will be making my own announcement on my news page, of course, and that may answer some of your questions, but I haven't actually written it yet, so please be patient.

I appreciate all the casting suggestions too, but guys, you're getting way way WAY ahead of yourselves. Developing a television series is a long and time-consuming process, and we're just getting started here. We only closed the deal a couple of days ago.

I will do my best to keep everyone informed as the project progresses, but this is not something you will be telling TIVO to record next week.

This might be a great time to subscribe to HBO, however. Regardless of what happens with A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, HBO still has the best shows on television, shows like DEADWOOD, THE WIRE, and THE SOPRANOS that stand head and shoulders above anything on the networks. The second season of ROME just started last Sunday, and it's fabulous; the look of it, the writing, the directing, the acting, all of it is first rate. That's why I have been saying for years that HBO was the perfect place for A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE.

Am I the only one that noticed in the article they named it "A Song of Fire and Ice"? Way to switch around Ice and Fire, jerks!

But anyways, this is the most exciting news I've heard in a while. I predict this will become my favorite show, ever! :)

I have seen "A Song of Fire and Ice" in about four different places on the internet. It pisses me off!

That's awesome news, really, really awesome news, and congratulations.

Also, you don't know me, but I just found out my best friend's mom went to school with you (or so she claims). So... that's kind of cool.

Congrats!
But how come every time I try to lower my cable bill by lopping off channels I get news like this? First it was another season of Rome on HBO. Then it was The Dresden Files on the SF Channel. Then I hear Showtime might nab a couple BBC shows I would love to see. Now THIS, the best/worst news of all.

Just when I thought that I was out . . . they pull me back in!

HBO is definately the perfect place for a series like this. It's been a while since I had HBO, but I remember the excellent series Oz and the early seasons of the Soprano's. I've heard amazing things about both Rome and Deadwood as well and I've been looking into getting them on DVDs.

I shall definately be keeping an eye open for future developments in this topic.

P.S. - I just read the Hedge knight and loved it. I'm in the middle of a sworn sword and I am really enjoying the direction of the story. The conversation between Ser Eustace and Dunk on the road is beautiful. (I'm being vague to not spoil anything)

Congratulations
Truly fantastic news - I just discovered the SONG OF ICE AND FIRE series about a year ago thru a friend, and I haven't put it down since (have read it all about 4 times). Making this series into a TV series, (on HBO so there's no need to "clean up" the truly interesting parts), is pure genius.

Congratulations to you, your fans, and all the people who will be exposed to your work thru the TV series!

Still in awe,
Makboz

The rest of the story?????
The TV deal is good news. GREAT, AMAZING, AWESOME news would be that books 5-7 are going to be released in a reasonable time period. The article quotes 2011 as the end of the book series, but at the recent pace it's going to be more like 2020.

Please don't get sidetracked, George.

Re: The rest of the story?????
Come on now... pick it up and read it again, and agian if you need a fix. I don't care if I have to wait till 2050 for the remaining books, I trust that GRRM's process will happen and the resulting writing will be what I have come to love. He's not a bloody vending machine.

This has totally made my day. Now we not only have the books to look forward to, but also now we'll have a somewhat regualr fix. Awesome.

MAKE SURE THEY DON'T FUCK UP WITH CASTING when the time comes around for that.

They WILL let you in on who they choose to portray each character, I hope!

How exciting! This is wonderful news. We can't really afford HBO (since I need to favor making room for car payments instead) so we may have to wait until Netflix gets it, which will hopefully be in my lifetime...
