Dreaded Dance
Goerge, we're all behind you! Personally, I don't know how you have the will to still be plugging away at the dreaded Mereenese Knot - if only you could magic up an Alexander type to cut the knot at a stroke for you!

I guess one way to look at the fan response is to realise that we're all starved of decent fantasy stuff - although at least Bradon Sanderson is finishing off the Wheel of Time to give me something else to look forward to.

Though... I can see how people too the this post as a note you'd finished. They obviously didn't read the last one very well. I take it you at least didn't revise your opinion on that Jon Snow chapter!

Glad to hear that you've made some progress George :)

Ok...no need to be mad
Mr. Martin I don't see the point in being angry or anything. Many of us,fans, are eagerly expecting that ADWD so that 'accomplished' mood and the book cover would make thousands of us think(don't include me,I didn't think this,I'm just speaking in the name of zillion fans):"Oh my GOD...HE DID IT!!!"

But,again, you shouldn't worry about some 124 comments, just ignore it,without being mad and continue enjoying in good day. Many famous writers were/are under pressure, and you shouldn't be an exception. ;D

Grats, George.

Everybody else, do not poke the author. He may get cranky and kill your favorite character. Or worse, he might kill my favorite character.

I'd like to believe that his work means more to him than would be worth the petty act of killing a popular character off to get back at fans... those whose death is good for the story will die, those who need to stay alive will live. The man has integrity, jeez haha.

We, in all fairness, might have jumped the gun on this; the anticipation has been so huge, we should have figured he would be explicit were he to finish. He, in all fairness, shouldn't have put the cover of ADWD and the mood 'accomplished,' and not expected this kind of reaction (even though every completed chapter is certainly an accomplishment).

I'm sure he's moved on, let's do the same.

Chill pill guys leave the poor man alone he is just saying he had a good writing day :P

I like the cover. It could use some half naked wildling chicks riding polar bears, but all in all, it's a solid design :P

P.S.: I'm sure you and many of your fans have heard of these guys by now, but on the off chance you haven't, have a listen:

Know that metal-heads everywhere love your work.

You disabled the comments on the above post.

So, don't let us the Great Unwashed aggravate you too much. Most of us who claim to be fans know that you are doing your damndest to get that book out and we are patient enough to wait for its publication.

On a completely unrelated note who will you gun for in the Superbowl nest week??

I hope that you will return to Belast some day so that I can buy you and Parris a couple of margaritas.

you should not be aggravated
This is in response to his next blog post that does not allow updates.

George: When you post an update about a book and you get little to no response because no one cares you should be aggravated. There are not alot of authors who can get fans to wait 9 years for 2 books and be this excited. The only 2 other authors with long running series that I know could do this to people is Stephen King with Dark Tower and Robert Jordan with The Wheel of Time.

That puts you in an elite class. There are probably 100 fantasy/sci-fi authors who would kill for this response to a vague blog post about finishing a book.

Re: you should not be aggravated
This is so true.

As a huge fan that has spread the word of GRRM it is pretty daunting to have to wait for this series. And when it does happen I am sure it will have been worth the wait.

Dear George
When you leave your legions of loyal fans waiting for years, you should not be exasperated when they take any sign of progress as worthy of adulation. Frankly, I learned many years ago that the book would be done when I saw it on a shelf for purchase.

Nevertheless, to say I am disappointed in the long wait would be an understatement. Let me be clear, you don't owe me another book. You also do not owe me any explanation for why it is taking you so long to complete the next work in your series. However, what you have said on this blog, and what you have done many times over on this same platform, often is not consistent. Do this, you owe it to your true fans and to yourself to stop updating on DoD until you are 100 percent finished.

Thanks for reading.

Good to see what this cover is going to look like. Keep working on the knot though. We all know you'll get it worked out eventually.

: )
I love Snow... Thanks for the update!

Mr. Martin, I do have a random question. Who did the art for the banner icons on your website? I was trying to find the answer on the site but obviously did not.

This is excellent news! Congrats on finishing the book Mr. Martin, already a productive year for you!

Fuck that knot up.

Dear Mr. Martin,

You know I've been reading this blog for quiet a while. I've invited you to my country, Greece, more than once. To my home for that matter. I am not some crazed fan who can't hold it together.
However, let me just point out that you are in the wrong here to be aggrevated, very wrong too. When you post a sybillic message, it is only natural that your -VERY dedicated- fanbase will go crazy. All these people read your blog daily, with the hope of someday having the good news of the book being ready and going for editing. I'm one of them. I read your blog daily, I even check back twice a day. And with all respect, Mr. Martin, I would appreciate it if our enthusiasm didn't aggrevate you. I fully understand that the pressure that comes from all of us sort of adds to the pressure you already experience from your publisher and from yourself, but you cannot blame your fanbase for being presistant and dedicated.
We all love your work and really like you and your partner as persons, and we really love the fact that you open up this easily to your fans, but you DID post something that was SO open to interpretation, that it shouldn't shock you that people actually thought the book was done.
So, don't be mad at me, because I'd be really disappointed, but you kind of had it coming...

Still working on that. When we have a final, I will share it.

All the Wild Cards books under Tor have had absolutely stellar covers. I'd frame them and hang them on my wall if I could.

Are all these examples digital artwork? It doesn't look like traditional oil on canvas. I miss the fantasy/sci-fi covers of the '70s and '80s. Even the paperbacks had amazing covers.

Whatever anyone can get their hands on is, I suspect, the right answer.

At the last party, it was an open bar with pretty much everything you can imagine on offer. There were some special drinks as…

Any chance you could tell us who’s doing the cover art for Fire and Blood? And maybe when we can expect a glimpse of it. Thank you!
