Quarry Query

The LARNE TIMES broke the story a "massive castle" being build in an old quarry near Magheramorne for HBO's GAME OF THRONES. The quarry is about forty minutes north of Belfast, near the town of Larne.

I can confirm that, more or less. The set being built at Magheramorne will be our Castle Black. Not actually THAT massive a castle -- much of Castle Black will be created in post with CGI -- but it will come complete with a fully operable winch elevator, David and Dan tell me.

Google tells me that "the gobbinsite at Magheramorne quarry is found as a rare filling of vugs and vesicles." I have no idea what that means, but hey, it sounds like it came straight out of someone's fantasy novel. Gobbins, vugs, and vesicles all in one place. I hope they don't attack the castle. Those gobbins are mean sonsobitches.

Let me caution anyone reading this, however -- please DO NOT go rushing off to visit Magheramorne. Quarries can be dangerous places, and construction sites doubly so. We don't want any fans getting hurt. Besides, why spoil the illusion? Castle Black will be best viewed on screen, in all its glory.

(And no, HBO will not actually be building a 700 foot high wall of ice. We tried, but the cubes kept melting).

Thanks George!
This gives posters over at Winter-is-Coming something to overanalysis the to most minimal detail possible for the next 12 hours! :D We all appreciate having something to do besides working/writing thesises/feeding our offspring!

No 700 foot wall of ice?! They are not taking this seriously enough!

Hello to Ty.

Just to spoil the illusions ...
Gobbinsite is a type of mineral found only in County Antrim, vugs are cavities within rock often partially filled with crystalline deposits, and vesicles are vugs that have completely filled. (A geode is a type of vug/vesicle formation.)

Gobbinsite-filled geodes would be pretty cool. Me wants one!

Re: Just to spoil the illusions ...
That's all well and good to know about gobbinsites, but that still doesn't tell us if it is dangerous and whether or not it will attack the cast and crew! (GRRM is right, it sounds like some sort of evil snark or grumpkin.)

Re: Just to spoil the illusions ...
The good thing about minerals is that very seldom do they attack people.

Unless they are a Horta :)

Re: Just to spoil the illusions ...
Unless crystalline geodes have developed volitional mobility, I think they're all safe. Not that someone couldn't hit someone else on the head with one!

I am disappointed that there will be no 700-foot ice wall. I've been stockpiling rum, lime, soda and mint for the world's greatest mojito. Well, we'll find SOME use for all of that. ;-)

Re: Just to spoil the illusions ...
It would be really cool if they could find one and use it for a dragon egg prop.

Awesome :)

You gonna go ride the elevator before they strike it?
Jun. 25th, 2010 07:07 pm (UTC)
Awesome! After years of driving past that mess of a hole, it'll be nice for it to be used for something cool, or indeed something at all. At the same time, it's still utterly bizarre to see you mentioning places I know in your posts. Proves I didn't imagine the whole place, I suppose.

It's at times like this it's a shame THRONES won't be appealing to the younger viewer, otherwise we might be seeing toys like "Castle Black with real operable winch elevator! (figures sold separately)" in the shops next year :-)

Video of the quarry
This totally looks like something Robb, Theon, and Bran would do. And of course Arya. Sansa would be running to tell the Septa while Hodor would splash around having a ball!

The Antrim coast gorgeous. If you go there to check out the set, make sure you also drive the coast road up a ways and see the Giant's Causeway.

Hahahaha funny comment at the end about the 700m high walla :)
Can´t wait to start watching the series..... am sure it´s gonna be a blast.... keep it up!

Seriously.... how cool is it that someone is making a castle based on your writings? That has to hit pretty hard.

From the Article:
Published Date: 24 June 2010
FILMING is to take place in Magheramamorne quarry later this year for a major new series by TV giants HBO.
It is understood a massive castle is to be constructed in the quarry landscape as part of the film set for Game of Thrones - based on the series of books by George RR Martin - and described as "an epic struggle for power set in a vast and violent fantasy kingdom".

And this Saturday, casting begins for suitable members of the public who would like to be extras in the film. Among those needed are men with long hair and beards and with a swarthy complexion; women with long, dark hair and male and female horse riders who own their own horses.

Also sought are people with "interesting, time-less, unusual and quirky character faces", anyone with "medieval skills" and amputees.

Read the full exclusive story in this week's Larne Times.

Anyone know which VFX studio(s) have been brought on?
Jun. 26th, 2010 08:39 am (UTC)
For the pilot, Look Effects seems to have been the lead VFX shop. No idea as to the rest of the series yet.

The Wall
Try soaking and freezing sheets of newspaper or piles of wood pulp. That stuff will last for hours in California, let alone Northern Ireland.
Jun. 26th, 2010 08:32 am (UTC)
i bet you can build a 700 foot wall of ice in antarctica and it won't melt... (do it on the side of a glacier and you've got the first 200 taken care of)
Jun. 26th, 2010 08:59 am (UTC)
Sorry. NOT having a 700ft wall of ice will break my verisimilitude.
Jun. 26th, 2010 10:10 am (UTC)
I live near this quarry!! It seems so surreal that my favourite books are being made into a tv show right beside my hometown!
Jun. 26th, 2010 11:01 am (UTC)
Wall o' ice
Hey, if Mythbusters™ can build and sail a ship out of icy-newspaper in California, a fully crewed FX team should be able to do a wall in Ireland with no problems.
Jun. 29th, 2010 01:30 pm (UTC)
out of interest
a Vug is a cave.

And Larne has a lovely ferry across to Scotland (Stranraer). Avoid getting on said ferry when either Glasgow team is playing football.
Jun. 29th, 2010 04:37 pm (UTC)
I was worried about this ...
No 700' wall of ice, huh. My biggest fear when I heard HBO was picking the series up was that they'd cheap out on it. No 700' wall of ice just shows I was right to have such reservations. I haven't been this disgusted since SciFi refused to construct a desert planet for their take on Dune!
