Dancing in Circles?

((Some of what follows may be vaguely spoilerish. Don't read if you hate spoilers).

A DANCE WITH DRAGONS just got a little shorter.

What's happened is, I've decided to move two completed chapters, from Arianne's POV, out of the present volume and into THE WINDS OF WINTER. This is something I've gone back and forth on. Arianne wasn't originally supposed to have any viewpoint chapters in DANCE at all, but there's this... hmmm, how vague do I want be? VERY vague, I think... there's this event that would of necessity provoke a Dornish reaction. The event was originally going to occur near the end of the book, but in one of my forty-seven restructures I moved it to the late middle instead. And the timeline then required that the Dornish reaction happen in this book and not the next one, so I wrote the two Arianne chapters and was going to write a third... and a chapter from another POV that would be a necessary complement to them, and...

But no, I've restructured again, and put the original precipitating event back close to the end of the book. Which means the Arianne chapters can be returned to WINDS, where I had 'em originally. It also means that I don't have to write that third Arianne chapter and the complementary chapter from the other POV... not yet, anyway... which moves DANCE two chapters closer to completion. (The move did mean I had to revise two chapters from another POV, which took place after the event in last week's draft, but now take place before said event, but fortunately that was just a matter of tweaking a couple of lines).

I suppose this is a good news/ bad news situation.

Bad news for those who want DANCE to be really, really, really long, as long as STORMS OF SWORDS or longer. This move makes DANCE four chapters (two written, one partly written, one entirely unwritten) shorter.

But it's good news for DANCE, since I'm now two chapters (the ones I hadn't finished) closer to completion. And hey, it's even good news for WINDS OF WINTER, since I now have four chapters done for that one (an Arya, a Sansa, and two Ariannes).

This, of course, is assuming that I don't change my mind again tomorrow and put everything back the way it was last week.

I am dancing, boys and girls, I'm dancing as fast as I can. But some days it does feel as if I am dancing in circles.

Great News!
Thanks for the update. It looks like Dance is nearly complete. How very exciting! Certainly as exciting as the HBO trailer I've watched a million times.

And hey, now we know Sansa and Arya survive the Dance.

I just finished Feast for Crows yesterday (I know, I know, I came late to the party >.>), so I'm only now joining the ranks of those waiting for Dance. All in all, getting an update this quickly, and especially one that possibly pushes the release date sooner? Pretty cool news!

overall it's good news, because this is still progress. Addition by subtraction, or addition by addition, you're getting closer to completion. :) I'm glad to see this update, thanks very much.

Though now I'm all kindsa worried about Arianne, and I hadn't even thought of her as being a POV in the DANCE.

... She doesn't get gout does she???

The book won't be as big as Storm of Swords? NUts! I was looking forward to working out with DoD in one hand and SoS in the other...now one of my biceps is going to be smaller!

Keep up the good work Mr Martin, we support you. I learned patience a long time ago.

Also late to the party . . .
I have been a long-time fan of the Wild Card books, but had avoided the Fire and Ice books because I wasn't ready for ANOTHER epic fantasy series.

But a few months ago, I finally picked them up. I have limited reading time, but I have been gobbling up these books, sneaking reading time in during lunch breaks, being late to appointments so I could get in a few more pages . . .

Thank you, sir, for some wonderful books. I am about 2/3 through Feast, but expect to go back and re-read all the books again. And I am thrilled that it won't be long (hopefully) before Dance comes out. I have been happy to buy each volume new, just to make sure that a few of my pennies goes into your pocket as a reward for such great characters and surprising stories. And I am recommending these books to everyone who is unfortunate enough to be near me while I'm sneaking in a few more pages.

Re: Also late to the party . . .
Yes...definitely worth rereading several times. GRRM has woven like a hundred mini stories throughout the series which can only be gleaned from noticing a quip here and a loose lip there. Lives rise to aspiring heights or dash themselves on rocks even though they only get a sentence or two in each chapter. I don't know if he takes notes and makes sure to keep these mini stories alive or if it's just streaming out of his head, but...yes...be sure to reread them several times and prepare to be awed.

Hard for my wife
I have checked here last 1 year ago or so .
After 5 years (or is it 6 ?) since the last book I don't remember anymore who Arianne is . Vague recollection about Dorne .
But finding that work is going on creates an ambiguous feeling . One one side it is good news because I liked SOIAF .
On the other side it is bad news because it is still going on .

What hurts me most is that my wife hated fantasy litterature and I initiated her with SOIOF 5 years ago .
She liked it but didn't want to try more as long as she didn't finish SOIOF .
Now I know that she won't continue because she forgot everything and won't reread all the previous books and wait again years for the next .
Ah well ...

In any case good luck with the work in progress George .

Dancing in Circles
You are the author, put the chapters in or take 'em out, your choice. I know you will make the right one. Getting excited that dance is getting closer!!

Well, I've finished Feast, and I'm sold enough to hunt out some more GRRM, but I don't know which. Would anyone be willing to suggest what a fan of ASOIAF should read next? Or maybe George can be cajoled into telling us what his favorite of his own books is, besides Ice and Fire?

Of my other novels? FEVRE DREAM.

If you like short fiction, though, DREAMSONGS. All my best short stuff is in those two massive volumes.

And then try WILD CARDS. Which is not all mine, true... but I've edited and shaped the whole series, and there are twenty volumes to date and more on the way, so collecting and reading 'em all should keep you busy for a long, long time.

It is nice to get some news about A Dance with Dragons. I think I check the Ice & Fire update once a week hoping for some news, lol.

My biggest fear is I die before the series is completed. ;) I knew a kid who was really into the books as well, but died from cancer before A Feast for Crows came out... That makes me sad.

I have read the books five times by now. My paperbacks completely destroyed, I had to buy the hardcovers, lol. I always find something new when I re-read them. I will re-read them all again once Dance comes out. Reading Dance first, then back to the beginning and Dance again.

Crank Yankers says....yayyyyyyy!
With trepidation sir, and a bottle at hand (actually a LOT of bottles), I await your final pronouncement on the matter!

Hi George, I'm waiting A Dance with Dragons. Im spanish so I only understand some english. Im 13 years old but I love A song of ice and fire, hope you finish the 5 soon!!

Jun. 30th, 2010 01:59 am (UTC)
I'll gladly wait-I have something to look forward to.

I'm glad you are taking the time to make sure that the book is just right and wont rush-I'm sure it will be brilliant when it is finished!
Jun. 30th, 2010 03:48 am (UTC)
The wait is too long!
Maybe I should pick up the Green Ronin campaign book and craft my own tales of political intrigue and adventure...

Hey GRRM, are you selling that on your website? could it count towards the 100$+ purchase to get a free 2009 calendar?

Re: The wait is too long!
Afraid not. But it's available from Green Ronin, and at any good games shop.
