Come to Worldcon

Having fun in Melbourne.

Aussiecon IV starts on Thursday, officially, but people are already arriving. WE're here, obviously. So is GOH Kim STanley Robinson, Greg Benford, others. More arriving every day.

If you're a fan of SF or fantasy -- not just my stuff, any SF or fantasy -- and live in Australia, you owe it to yourself to get your ass to worldcon. This is THE event on the fannish calendar, the granddaddy of all other cons. The last time it was in Australia was 1999. It may be another ten years before it returns again. It may never return again. So let's not hear mutters about other commitments and similar feeble excuses. JUst do it.

Yes, I will be doing a signing in Sydney. But a signing is a poor substitute for a con. At a sgning you'll stand in line for hours to get maybe thirty seconds with me... or whatever writer you're queuing up for. AT a con you can spend a whole weekend with your favroite riters and fellow fns. THere are parties, drinking, panels, drinking, readings, drinking, quests, drinking, flirtations, the dealers room, the art show, drinking... and yes, signings too.

Mr. Martin it would appear you are enjoying yourself quite well in Australia. I am quite envious. It would appear so because the spelling as your post concluded got worse and worse. Party on Mr. Martin. It would be an amazing experience to have a drink with one of my favourite authors. :D

One day good sir, one day.

I want to be there so bad!

Very jealous! I wish everybody who can make it the best of times!

sounds so fun! I wish I wasn't a poor college student so I could fly out there and join! Can't wait til the next book! You are a wonderful writer. My father is actually writing a fantasy series right now.. so if you ever read these, you should check out his book when it comes out. Sorry for the rambling... I have been drinking. Though I wish I had been drinking at the con. Ok i'm done.

You might want to note that a certain British fan is organizing a real ale pub crawl on Wednesday evening: details here.

Borrowing Parris's notebook, George? I hate those damned flush keys on keyboards these days, I swear I lose 20 WPM.

For those considering going to the con, the Brotherhood without Banners will be representing. Two room parties are scheduled, and the traditional quest to win your knighthood is on the books (The Knights of the Shrimp on the Barbie? The Knights of the Vegemite Perilous? Only George knows for sure what perilous item will have to be obtained...)

You can learn more about this and everything else having to do with the BwB presence at AussieCon at Westeros.org.

Oh, and for those in Sydney, the signing George mentions will take place on September 13 at Galaxy Books, 12:30PM (details via Voyager Books Australia).

If it ever comes near Berlin I'll sure as hell will be there. But sadly Germany is not the best terrain for SciFi or Fantasy. Just saw that Worldcon was in Heidelberg in 1970, odd choice as a German city...

And btw: Pizza at Lombardi's was great, thx for the tip George!

Beat me to it :P

Ah, it's my dream to get to worldcon someday! I am glad the destination is turning out to be a lot more fun than the journey in this instance. Kim Stanley Robinson's books are on the same reading rotation in our home as yours - ;) fun stuff! Enjoy, everyone who will be there.

You've convinced me! I'm on a plane tomorrow!

"favroite riters and fellow fns. THere are parties"

Laughed out loud. Thanks.

Now you know why I don't write while on the road. I adapt very badly to strange computers, and my huge old DOS destktop is too big to lug around.

30 seconds?
It felt closer to 15 when I had you sign Feast for me... even with me asking you a question which you easily answered, and me wish I had remembered that particular detail myself, and asked you something better!
Aug. 29th, 2010 06:35 pm (UTC)
Indeed. :) I met you at Noreascon 4, and that is a very apt description.

Too much drinking, not enough quests and flirting.
Aug. 30th, 2010 01:10 am (UTC)
Whooo! Can't wait. We don't get there until late Wednesday night - but I'm looking forward to seeing everyone in the days that follow!

Ah, I wish! I live in Montreal and saw you last year at WorldCon here, but not at a panel or anything, they were too full; just on an escalator while you were going up and I was going down or vice versa; hard to shout "love your work GRRM!" under those circumstances {g}!

Hope you continue to have a lovely time (as you clearly already are) and hope my big bro Richard does the same (although he's very worried about a very ill cat at home).
