Busy Week

I've been juggling lots of balls this past week, but making good progress on a number of fronts.

All of the art is finally in for Subterranean Press's limited edition of FEVRE DREAM, and we've been going over the page proofs and placing the illustrations. Justin Sweet has done some truly spectacular work for this one -- a great moody cover, three stunning full color plates, and a bunch of beautiful black and white interiors. If you like illustrated books, this will be one you'll want to have, even if you've read FEVRE DREAM before.

Also been doing a lot of WILD CARDS work. The first drafts of the stories for BUSTED FLUSH, the second of the new volumes, have been pouring in, and I've been reading them all and sending out notes to the writers for their rewrites. With a project like WILD CARDS, the first draft is never the final one. There's always a lot of revision required so the tales will fit together. We're well on the way, however, and I think the book will be a strong one when it's done.

And I've been working on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS too. Just finished revising the prologue a few hours ago. As I mentioned last post, after reading it at the Indianapolis convention, there were aspects of it that I was not happy with. The new version is a page shorter and much stronger, I think, with a better flow and crisper transitions. I also punched up one element that somehow had gotten lost before... but it was an important element, I believe, so I'm pleased that I was able to strengthen it.

Tomorrow is Parris's birthday, and we're off to the Bull Ring for some of Santa Fe's best steaks. Phipps will find a lobster too, I'm sure. She's going to be turning 29!

First post here, first post for me too!
Just wanted to say that I'm a big fan. Thanks for making moral ambiguity a part of fantasy.

Ohhhhhh...the Bull Ring....
When I friended you, I had no idea you live in Santa Fe.

OK, so I'm a "pre-fan", I was doing some research for my son, who's in a place where he has no access to Internet but he's absolutely enthralled with your writing, and he asked me to find out when "A Dance With Dragons" would be out. Like many other fans, he's been a little...ermmmm...impatient :) I've todl him quality takes time, but, you know...

Anyway. My dad's lived in Santa Fe for 35 years, and I used to spend every summer there visiting him. I have some great memories from there, from going to places like the Bull Ring, Bishops' Lodge, the Palace, El Farol. Sadly the only place good New Mexican food can be had...is in New Mexico.

It's a lovely town. I'd move back except that the town isn't big enough for both me and my dad :)

Anyway...I hope you have a great night out!

Re: Ohhhhhh...the Bull Ring....
Granted, I'm no expert on this subject, but in the Northern Virginia there is a chain of restaurants that was started by this woman named Anita whose husband was transferred from New Mexico to DC for work, and she couldn't find good Mexican food. She brought out all her recipes and started importing peppers, spices, and other ingredients from New Mexico. This was about30 years ago. Anita has since retired, but the business has grown in to 7 (soon to be 8) stores. The name is Anita's (terribly original name, I know).

To George: If you read this and ever want to put Anita's to the test, I'm buying.

Congrats on the progress on all of your projects. And it must have felt good to get so much feedback on Dance at the con.
More importantly have fun on your night out!

Say Happy Birthday to Parris, from all of us!

I have an idea, a really good way to test the strength of the prologue would be to post it as a sample chapter on your website!

Well it was worth a try anyway

Happy Birthday to Parris!

It's always good to know that your heroes are persnickity, I'm sure Dance will be well worth the wait. As a bonus, all the folks from Indianapolis will get to pore over the revision muttering to themselves as they try to sort out what precisely was changed! Delicious muttering indianapolites.

Although off-topic, none of this should be construed as not wishing Parris a happy birthday.
Ah, why did I choose this year for picking up the rereleases of your older books? Especially Fevre Dream, which I ended having to buy twice already due to forgetfulness and dashing between planes.

And speaking of rereleases - or just taking advantage of the relatively few comments this post has received so far - are there any plans to reissue any of your short stories?

short stories
Well, DREAMSONGS will be released in two hardcover volumes by Bantam this fall. That has a wealth of my short fiction in it.

I hope the the writing and revising and all of those word things are going well. I also hope to possibly to hear a revision of the prologue at Trinoc'con on MY birthday, Huzzah, the fourth of August. See you soon, im counting the days.

Ah, I'm glad I waited before buying Fevere Dreams. I wonder if that limited edition would ever be available here in the Philippines. *crosses fingers* Your books are so hard to find here sometimes. I barely managed to get Dreamsongs.

And an advance Happy Birthday to you Lady, Parris. :D

Bon L'anniversaire Parris!!
that Fevre Dream book sounds great, I hope it's going to be released in quantity in the UK. We seem to miss out on fancy editions too much

Re: Bon L'anniversaire Parris!!
It's a Subterranean Press release, which means you'll have to order it directly from them. They do ship to the U.K. for not very much.

Their website is at www.subterraneanpress.com/
