Busy Week

I've been juggling lots of balls this past week, but making good progress on a number of fronts.

All of the art is finally in for Subterranean Press's limited edition of FEVRE DREAM, and we've been going over the page proofs and placing the illustrations. Justin Sweet has done some truly spectacular work for this one -- a great moody cover, three stunning full color plates, and a bunch of beautiful black and white interiors. If you like illustrated books, this will be one you'll want to have, even if you've read FEVRE DREAM before.

Also been doing a lot of WILD CARDS work. The first drafts of the stories for BUSTED FLUSH, the second of the new volumes, have been pouring in, and I've been reading them all and sending out notes to the writers for their rewrites. With a project like WILD CARDS, the first draft is never the final one. There's always a lot of revision required so the tales will fit together. We're well on the way, however, and I think the book will be a strong one when it's done.

And I've been working on A DANCE WITH DRAGONS too. Just finished revising the prologue a few hours ago. As I mentioned last post, after reading it at the Indianapolis convention, there were aspects of it that I was not happy with. The new version is a page shorter and much stronger, I think, with a better flow and crisper transitions. I also punched up one element that somehow had gotten lost before... but it was an important element, I believe, so I'm pleased that I was able to strengthen it.

Tomorrow is Parris's birthday, and we're off to the Bull Ring for some of Santa Fe's best steaks. Phipps will find a lobster too, I'm sure. She's going to be turning 29!

Song of Ice and Fire Series
HBD to Parris, a fellow Cancerian. My son turned me onto SoIaF series and I am totally hooked. Am currently reading book 4; looking forward to the publication of book 5. One thing I wish you would do is make your maps more complete. As I read, I continue to reference the maps to mentally map where a battle or character is at the time. Most times, the city is not on the map. Why isn't the map of the Free Lands in every book? I like the family postings in the back, but what I wish you had was a glossary like Robert Jordan puts in his books. Definitions of a "castellan" or a territory would be very helpful. Once typed, it could just be copied into every book, like your maps of the North and South. What I REALLY want is a VERY complete map of the whole world (of this series). I would like to be able to purchase this as a separate entity and keep it folded up in whatever book I am reading at the time. Think that is a possibility? Keep up the research. Your time spent shows up in your writing. Thanks for the entertainment.

Re: Song of Ice and Fire Series
If you buy a limited edition book for the Game of Thrones role playing game, it comes with a fantastic pull out map. You can get them directly from GRRM if he still has any left. The gamebook has great illustrations as well as a ton of useful background informmation.

Happy Birthday Parris!!!
I don't know either of you at all except through your writing, but I wish you both the happiest of birthdays for her!!!

Also -- read Fevre Dream back in the 80's, *loved* and gave to several friends. Awesome that you have a new edition out.

we visited parts of Spain in 2001
and will be returning in the summer of 2008 for Semana Negra in Gijon. You can find a link on George's website in the 'appearances' section.

Besides Gijon, we'll probably be spending a few days in Madrid and Barcelona, and I think George hopes we can see a few other cities while there.

I'm very enthused about the new edition of Fevre Dream! I read it for the first time last summer, and loved it. That's definitely one I'll purchase... and with any luck I'll be able to have you sign it as well. But we shall see. Happy birthday to your lady!

Allow me to revise that: I've preordered it, and now hope in the future to get a personalized inscription!

You are certainly a man of many talents Mr. Martin, now we can add juggling to the list. I think all writers should learn to juggle. In fact they should all pretty much just aspire to be more like you!

Random niceties from a stranger
I happened across this "not a blog" by mere chance. I know nothing about you. Just wanted to say I like your smile. :-)

And don't worry, I don't expect you to respond. Just give someone that cute smile, and if we're lucky it will travel the world and return to me eventually. I, for one, am generally a rather lucky person. :-P

Happy Birthday to Parris. The Wild Card series is daunting to look into, but I'm gonna browse around for one of the books soon. :)

Singed retinas
My retinas are about singed from the SoIaF series but still yet can't remember that many words in it as allot of sentences are a hint or allusion to something else.
It's good to link history together like that in a away to tell a story and also keep the imagination going.
I still have to read Fevre Dream.

happy belated birthday,parris!
hope parris' birthday was happy! your cats will know when you've had lobster and didn't share ;) like when you open a can of tuna fish, they know!
i'm still 31 this 8/20, even though my mom's 19! between my transmission being gone & "oblivion" (if you ever put "asoiaf" as a free online game i might never leave the house!) & working a new project for work, been busy. grrm, please print prologue so we could help? or print something you are having trouble with, and we can help? that way the ones who are unable to go to conventions can help you too!
happy to wait, even though the wall is very cold,

Dreamsongs as a audio book
Hi l have just heard that actor Adrian Paul will be doing "Dreamsongs" as a audio book. What a fantastic choice he has such a beautiful mesmerising voice to listen to. Was there a reason for Adrian being chosen for this book l wonder? Hopefully it will not be too long before this is available.

Re: Dreamsongs as a audio book
I am afraid you have misunderstood. DREAMSONGS is a huge book with many different sorts of stories, so the audio version will use a number of different readers. Adrian Paul is one of them, but he will not be reading the entire book. (I worked with Adrian when he was a guest star on BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, by the way).

Other readers will include Roy Dotrice and... yes... me.

Dance w/ Dragons
I am one of those people who only comes to this site to find out if the next installment is complete and I just had an idea: Create an outgoing only email address, and let us sign up to receive an email when the book is finished.

Reading books
I'm just noticing that what you're reading hasn't been updated this year, and really, I just want to check that you are reading; it's good for the writin', too. I recently picked up The Lies of Locke Lamora with a blurb from you.
If you need any recommendations, let me know. If you haven't read The Wind Up Bird Chronicle yet, the summer's a good time, though it would possibly inhibit any work for two or three days.
Welp, good luck with the fiction.
