Ice & Fire Comes to Comics

Whether you're an Ice & Fire reader or a funny book fan or both, I have cool news for you. A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE is coming to comics. Random House/ Bantam Books has acquired the rights to do a graphic adaptation of the series, to be published as monthly comics (in partnership with Dynamite Entertainment) and as graphic novels in trade paperback format.

The comics will be scripted by DANIEL ABRAHAM, who should need no introduction to regular readers of this blog... but I'll give him one anyway. Daniel is the author of ten books and more than thirty short stories, under his own name and the pseudonyms M.L.N. Hanover and James S.A. Corey (with Ty Franck). He has been nominated for the Hugo, the Nebula, and the World Fantasy awards, and won the International Horror Guild Award. Daniel's previous comic work includes the adaptation of my historical horror novel FEVRE DREAM for Avatar, and the original Wild Cards series THE HARD CALL for Dynamite and DBPro. When not adapating my fantasy series, he's presently writing his own, THE DAGGER AND THE COIN.

The series will be drawn by artist TOMMY PATTERSON, who won the gig over more than a dozen other artists from around the world who applied for the assignment and submitted samples. With so much top rank talent to pick from, it was a tough choice, but Daniel and I and our editors at Bantam and Dynamite were all knocked out by the character sketchs and sample pages that Tommy submitted.

Tommy's previous credits include FARSCAPE for Boom! Studios, the movie adaptation THE WARRIORS for Dynamite Entertainment, and TALES FROM WONDERLAND, THE WHITE KNIGHT, RED ROSE, and STINGERS from Zenescope Entertainment. He holds a BS in Studio Art and also works as a graphic designer. Patterson lives in Western Kentucky with his wife and daughter.

The first issue of the monthly comic is scheduled to be published by Dynamite Entertainment in late spring 2011. The graphic novel compilations will be published by Bantam.

*** And yes, for those who were wondering, this was one of the infamous Two Big Announcements that I was originally hoping to make during my visit to Los Angeles in early January, before my holidays in the hospital knocked all my plans off the rails.

Good choice for the artist! His samples are gorgeous. I hope he puts that much care into every panel!

1. THIS is awesome!! :) *comic nerd is pleased*

2. I have a silly Ice & Fire related question for you...

I'm throwing a viewing party complete with feast when the show premiers. It's my job to make the lemon cakes! Hehe. So, I figured I may as well go straight to the source- what do you envision lemon cakes looking like? Are they tarts? Are they more like lemon bars? Muffiny in nature? So many possibilities!

Damn... Now I'm hungery. :)

How cool! Game of Thrones and the comics both coming out this spring! Looking forward to them.

(I can't help but wonder what the other announcement was, and if that will be made sometime soon)

Great news, George. Looking forward to them.

Wow, I never expected ASOIAF proper to become a comic! Those sketches look great and, of course, Daniel Abraham will know how to adapt your work.

Will the Dunk & Egg "Hedge Knight" comics be reborn with the publication of "The Mystery Knight?" I just really like Mike S. Millar's interpretation of Dunk and Egg! (No disrespect to Tommy Patterson intended; they are different comics.)

We do hope to do a comic adaptation of "The Mystery Knight" at some point, though no deal is yet in place. It will be done by the same team as the last two... Ben Avery scripting and Mike S. Miller drawing... if I have my druthers. And I usually do.

The sketches look awesome. Looking forward to the comics.

I hope that you are feeling much better now after your hospitalization. Recovery always takes so much longer than we wish it would.

there can never be enough ASOIAF
comic, tv show, all that jazz, can't get enough. now where's a fevre dream film? that is a vampire story i can get behind.

i wonder and ponder at what the second announcement would be.

i am crossing my fingers for ASOIAF-themed frozen dinners and soup mixes. barley and venison soup, lamprey pie, beef and bacon pie, quails drowned in butter, and everyone's favorite - acorn paste that tastes awful but can be eaten at need!

what other announcement could we be possibly waiting for?

Logo of WILD CARDS is at front and I think immediately that is another WILD CARDS comic, so I get excited! Comic of A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE is good too and I am reading this when it arrives!

Books of Ice and Fire I am still reading. Cousin Evgeny reads while I do and we are almost finishing Clashes with Kings. Of WILD CARDS we are great fans but we enjoy this other work too. Maybe we read comic of westeros when it is released!

Good to know there are Wild Cards fans outside of the U.S. I've often pondered how people in other countries react to the epicness that is WCs. I know they're gaining popularity here in the States (About damn time!!!), but the series still doesn't get enough recognition in my book.

I can tell by your accent that you're from the Soviet Union. Maybe the historical events in Chernobyl could have spawned some real life Wild Cards? That would be something awful to behold (and yet really cool for a sci-fi geek like me.)

Hey, I just thought of a new Wild Card: Captain Commrade!
